Maybe this has been discussed before, but WHY OH WHY is there not some kind of outside humanitarian observation going on here?! Where is the UN, Amnesty Int'l, SOMEONE who can validate what's happening and hold us to account? I feel like every time there's some kind of humanitarian crisis in another country, there are tons of observers and NGOs and etc etc etc. Or am I imagining things?
We're being monitored, for sure, but we're also ignoring everyone.
Yes but neither of those indicate that there are currently (or ever have been, for that matter) observers on the ground on our border. They're just kind of theoretical wrist slaps for having horrific policies.
ETA: Okay, a more thorough reading of the AI one indicates that they were there a couple years ago... but... is there no recourse to a country for not following through? Can't other countries start to sanction US? How on earth do we ever get anyone to cooperate with anything? Has it just been goodwill all this time?
Rep. Burgess on conditions in migrant camps: "You know what? There's not a lock on the door. Any child is free to leave at anytime, but they don't. You know why? Because they are well taken care of."
Gosh, gee, I can't imagine why fucking FOUR YEAR OLD children aren't just traipsing out into the goddamn desert. Fuck these people. Seriously. They are literally soulless.
And I don't for one second believe that *if* a child decided to try to leave that he/she wouldn't be stopped and punished for attempting to do so.
also can we cancel the fucking 4th of July until our country stops putting children (and adults!) in concentration camps at the border?? I have zero national pride. Hated the holiday last summer too.
I'm so broken over this. And all I see on FB comments (I know, I know) is that it's the Dem's fault for not passing anything to fix it. So.
Yeah. There's bills about the border in Congress right now. The House want to pass one that says the money can only be used for the humanitarian aspects of taking care of the kids and other detainees. The GOP meanwhile is refusing to sign on to that, because it contains explicit language saying the money being appropriated can't be redirected to build up forces at the border and to deport people. The GOP is crowing about how the Dems are the ones responsible for why the detention facilities are so awful, but when the Dems try to make sure the money actually GOES to improve detention condition rather than serving the Trump/Miller dream of deportation sweeps and a militarized border, then suddenly that's a big problem. If they care so much about helping the detainment conditions, then why are they okay about allowing the administration to reappropriate the money away from there? GTFO.
Also, I know these type of people exist, but the people who greet the treatment children are getting -- CHILDREN -- with either "eh its not that bad" or "OBAMA STARTED IT" or whatever are just...I don't understand how you can be so soulless. And the deflection and whataboutism. JFC. I bet $100 that these same people being like "BUT OBAMA" would tell their kids that "But my brother did it first" is not an excuse to engage in wrongdoing, but yet....
Also that Representative who said the kids can just up and leave is full of crap. These kids are here illegally. These kids are in detention. Unless and until DHS delegates their custody to a foster home, they are in DHS custody. DHS is *not* going to be all, "Oh, you want to leave our facility where we will have no way of keeping track of you, person who is not authorized to be in this country and who we have not decided to release? By all means, have a lovely day!" That's not how this works.
It's only going to get worse. As we get closer to the election, this stuff is going to get worse because he thinks it plays well with his base. And that is horrific, because things are already so awful.

Seeking asylum is not illegal.
I know. That was poorly worded. All I was trying to convey is they heyhave not been technically authorized to be here or admitted or however you want to say it. They are subject to the oversight of DHS -- which means DHS is not going to be all "oh sure, good luck!" if the kids try to leave.
Not to mention on a more basic level these are minors. So that representative's comment is asinine, because DHS has an obligation to care for them. Like, DHS as custodian would be obligated to try to stop some 9 year old who tried to run away. DHS has an obligation as a caretaker to make sure these kids don't leave without a proper place to go.
All I was trying to say is the representative is full of crap and his comment was bad faith because for various reasons these kids can't leave these facilities without DHS okay.
When it comes down to it, there are two types of people in this world: those who are okay with placing children in concentration camps with no beds, soap, or showers and inadequate caregivers or medical attention, and those who are NOT okay with it. People with the power to stop this, but DON’T, must be okay with it. I think we know what kind of person Trump is, and many of his GOP cronies.
American journalist Michael Scott Moore, abducted in 2012 while reporting in Somalia, watched Fabian argue that minimal necessities, like toiletries and sleeping conditions, were not essential to meet minimum “safe and sanitary” standards.
“That was — let’s say — below my experience in Somalia,” he told The Washington Post Tuesday of his more than two years in captivity.
“The conditions were about as miserable as you could imagine,” he said, describing a barren and concrete prison house. Often there was no electricity, he said, “but we had certain minimum things that kept it from being completely wretched.”
He said he was given toothpaste, soap, a daily shower and a foam mattress.

I also can’t get over the fact that Rep Burgess from the video above is a fucking obstetrician. He dedicated decades of his life to bringing children into the world safely, but these two year olds brought their lice with them and should just walk home if they aren’t happy with their surroundings? Disgusting.
There is a mass worldwide vigil scheduled by Lights for Liberty on July 13. I am planning to attend my local one and I hope many people do across the country and beyond.

This administration is very big on sovereignty of our borders. They aren't letting reporters in the centers and it seems like they are barely letting lawyers in. They aren't going to let outside observers in.

This excerpt you posted took my breath away.
I know our administration is made up of heartless people, but I'm having a hard time with how many horrible workers and guards and agents must be in contact with these kids that are turning a blind eye to the conditions, people that are right there with it in their faces. I'm just speechless

I started at fundraiser on my FB page for Together Rising, which I know has lawyers on the ground. It's at almost $1200 in less than 36 hours. People REALLY want to help. I wish there was a better way.
I also saw this post on FB, which might not be feasible, but would be AMAZING.
BTW, the other day I posted two orgs that help at this detention center:
Immigrant Freedom Fund of Colorado (Bail fund) Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (Legal representation)
ETA: After I donated to the bail fund, they sent me an email and included this: "With your contribution added to others we have received we have been able to post bond for Aura E., who will be released this evening to join her family in North Carolina." So that was pretty cool.
