Credit is a shit show, generally. My DH recently got a check for $68K to our old house to buy a car. We haven't lived there in more than 5 years (thankfully, the people who bought our house are honest and nice). Why would anyone mail a loan check to an address that old? He froze his credit, but there were numerous other inquiries. For years, we have had to explain why I am not dead, as reported, and why DH was not a hair stylist across the country, 20 years ago, when we go to refinance or apply for a mortgage. They really should do better. It would not be hard to add faces, or some other identifier to your account, that would prevent this mess more often. My son's social security number was stolen when he was a baby, and there is nothing I can do about it until he is 13. As a landlord, I understand the importance, but the mistakes, and charging people to monitor the agency's own credit mistakes, so they can sell them to creditors, that should be criminal.

our Local news said SSN was stolen for 1% of the breached customers. The rest had addresses and birthdate, etc, which is sadly probably already readily available online.

With my luck, this will be the only 1% I’ll ever be a part of. Some also had their linked bank account info leaked. And this definitely is not going to be the last HUGE NEVER BEFORE SEEN BREACH!
Thank you scammer criminals for making our lives awesome!

The bank account info is supposedly only bank acct numbers - which, yes, would prefer not to share, but it's also on checks and people can't do much with bank account number alone. Now, bank account and password? That would be bad.
Signed, Local to this so news is covering like mad

The WaPost article I read last night said the SSNs that were stolen were only from people who had used their SSN as their employer ID number when applying for a small business loan. If you didn't do that you are probably fine.
At least Capital One had encrypted a good chunk of the stolen data, that's why more SSNs weren't compromised.
And they've already arrested the woman for this theft because she's a dumbshit who was bragging about it on social media.
