I wanted to see if anyone had info on this. I'm entering my 5th year teaching at a Title 1 school in a high needs area. At the end of this coming school year I should qualify for $17,500 student loan forgiveness. Would the FMLA time I take after the baby is born interfere with that? Will I need to make up the time and apply for forgiveness after an additional 6-8 weeks from the following school year?
Are you only taking FMLA time? I took a year off after each of my kids and was told that it reset the 10 years each time and to couldn’t make the time up. Highly annoying, and I’m pregnant again, so obviously it’s not gonna work out for me. I live in NY and work at a title 1 school as an elementary teacher, so it was 10 years for me to get any loan forgiveness. I hope it’s different if you only take FMLA time.

So I’m in the process of getting this forgiven. It been a PITA.
Anyway, if you stay on payroll, you *should* be fine. If not, you may have to do additional time.
Also, double check that your school is on the list. A couple friends struggled with their paperwork, because their schools weren’t on the list for forgiveness.

Found this on the application:
If you were unable to complete an academic year of teaching, that year may still be counted toward the required five consecutive, complete academic years if: (1) you completed at least one-half of the academic year; (2) your employer considers you to have fulfilled your contract requirements for the academic year for the purposes of salary increases, tenure, and retirement; and (3) you were unable to complete the academic year because: (A) you returned to postsecondary education, on at least a half-time basis, in an area of study directly related to the performance of the teaching service described above; (B) you had a condition covered under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA); or (C) you were called or ordered to active duty status for more than 30 days as a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces
