The U.S. won’t be vaccinating migrant families in holding centers ahead of this year’s flu season, despite calls from doctors to boost efforts to fight the infection that’s killed at least three children at detention facilities in the past year.
“In general, due to the short-term nature of CBP holding and the complexities of operating vaccination programs, neither CBP nor its medical contractors administer vaccinations to those in our custody,” a Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.
At least three children who were held in detention centers after crossing into the U.S. from Mexico have died in recent months, in part, from the flu, according to a letter to Reps. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., from several doctors urging Congress to investigate health conditions at the centers.
PSA: ALL Y'ALL BETTER BE GETTING THE FLU SHOT THIS YEAR (AND EVERY YEAR!)
Like, this doesn't surprise me, but it still shocks me, if that makes sense. Every day, I wake up and think it can't possibly be worse, and it always does.

Ugh, and people wonder why rah rah patriotism is so hard for so many. This country continually fails the morality test. I am so sad for these immigrants.
Migrant families who cross the southern border of the US illegally could be detained indefinitely under a new regulation announced by the Trump administration.
It replaces an agreement that set a limit on how long the government could hold migrant children in custody.
The move was announced by Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan and is due to come into effect in 60 days.

Has anyone watched Years and Years? Isn’t this almost exactly what happened on there? Immigrant death camps where people with the flu were housed together, intended to control the camp’s population?

Take all the humanity out of this, cause that's how this administration works, this is going to be so expensive. Flu shots are a hell of a lot cheaper than medical care for the flu. Which will probably be denied also so I guess it's a moot point.

Do you honestly think they'll actually provide medical care. These are the people who were denying basic sanitation, ffs.
I feel like disposing of dead bodies is probably more expensive than a flu shot. It’s not about the money.
Which, off topic I suppose, is made abundantly clear by the fact that the deficit was grounds for impeachment under Obama but is apparently no big deal now despite the incredible increase.
I think a fair number of us grew up not quite understanding how WWII happened. How did it get so bad? Why did people go along with it? Why didn’t anyone speak up?
I’m definitely understanding it a lot more. I see so many people thinking, “The press is sensationalizing this. Surely it’s not so bad.” And this is while we still have a reasonably free press.
The constant chipping away of rights, humanity, and decency is doing its part to make things that would previously have seemed outrageous just end up sounding “slightly worse” than before. Sometimes I worry that we’re starting to sound like those right-wing nut jobs who are always posting outlandish conspiracies, but the moment we let ourselves stop being outraged is the moment we start becoming complicit.
