DS is 8 and still wets the bed almost every night. He's sizing out of diaper-like options and we're getting a lot of leaks. We've had three mattress pads on his bed over the years but none really seem to work very well. I'm going to swap out his mattress, because the current one has just gotten gross, but before I do, I need a recommendation for a mattress pad or cover that would actually work. Any recs?
We have this pad. It believed it stopped 1 pee from soaking through, but my daughter stopped peeing in her sleep after that 1 accident. The reviews are great.
I don't know which one we have, but when we bought our last mattress, the store gave us a waterproof mattress pad/protector. One of our dogs put it to the test the second day we had it, and it worked.
If you are getting a new mattress, it might be worth checking with the store... mayve you can get them to throw one in for free with your purchase.
We used these bed pads. There are tons of choices- these covered about a third of his twin, which was plenty for DS (he didn't move around a lot in bed): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002DMPFS/
PeaPod Mats are amazing from what I've heard (we haven't reached the stage of using them but I have friends that do). They go on top of your sheets and then you can peel off and replace as necessary. My friend whos daughter has a lot of accidents tells me they're bulletproof.
I can't remember the specific brand, but we bought a zippered mattress cover off Amazon. It's kind of plasticy, so my one complaint is that it's loud when you sleep on it. (Doesn't bother DS (4y) at all, but bugs me when I have to sleep with him...save that for another post.) But if he wets the bed MOTN we take off all the sheets, wipe down the cover with a clorox wipe, wipe it dry with a hand towel, then put a new sheet on. Nothing has leaked through to the mattress yet. (He rarely has full-bladder-emptying accidents, maybe 2-3 times total so far, but will occasionally leak a bit before that wakes him up...which is enough to have to change sheets, pajamas, etc.)

I have an almost 7 yr old who still has issues and I use these two - both from Target and I haven't had problems with leaking onto mattress with either for over a year. I like that they aren't plastic-y and so they aren't loud, but they work really well. My mom even bought these for her VRBO.

Oh and I wanted to add, that I double sheet the bed a lot. Mattress pad - fitted sheet, then another mattress pad and fitted sheet. Then if there is an accident, I can peel off the top covers and sheet/mattress pad combo and still have the bed made in the middle of the night. It's a trick I learned from another person on The Nest about 11+ years ago when we started potty training my oldest.
I have one that works great. It is plastic on one side and terry cloth on the other. The plastic is glued to the terry side. Can't find a link but I bought it from Amazon. The only thing is that it needs to air dry. The heat of the dryer will make the plastic melt/stretch.
For anyone interested I just wanted to recommend the book ‘7 steps to nighttime dryness’. I read that and then got a enuresis alarm when DS was 7 and still in pull ups but wetting through them several nights per week. I thought it would take a long time to figure the situation out and train his body but he was dry and the alarm was off within two weeks. I was amazed.
I sure hope the one we’ve been using is actually waterproof! I tried the zip up super plasticy ones and they rip so easy, then I found one that was vinyl like but not super plastic from Target a few years ago and it has held up well to my very active sleeper. It also has a puppy pad between it and the mattress. Sleeping elsewhere is another story. We usually do puppy pads, but he moves so much, that he may not actually be on it when he soaks.
Humerus parent story: On our trip to Germany and Switzerland, we had forgotten the pads and needed something and couldn’t find puppy pads in the grocery store, so we bought a reusable cold food bag, some cleaning cloths and strapping tape. It got us through the rest of the trip.
