My H and I are looking to take a trip to Austin (we both have never been), and wanted to know what a good length of time would be, area to find a hotel in, and places to eat.
Any suggestions from Austin people (or those who have traveled there)?
I would stay downtown. If you can be near the hike/bike trail around Town Lake (Ladybird Lake) that’s a great spot for morning walks with coffee in hand.
Depending on the time of year you go, the bats may be active under Congress Bridge. That’s really cool to watch at sunset.
Make sure you get true Texas breakfast tacos while you’re there. My favorite is Rosie’s, but that’s out in the hill country (hwy 620 and 71). That said, if you go out there, you could go to Hamilton Pool (natural pool with rock overhangs and fun swimming spots along trails), which is amazing. You’d only want to do that if it’s nice and warm though. Still a cool place to go hike even if you don’t get in the water. Back to breakfast tacos though - don’t go to Torchy’s. Find a legit hole in the wall spot to get tacos.
There’s tons of great Tex-Mex. Hard to go wrong there.
Get ice cream at Amy’s.
There is a lot of live music along 6th Street. Great little dive bars where you can go drink and listen to a show.
There are so many great restaurants. The food scene is fantastic.
I’m from Lake Travis. If you have specific questions about that area, let me know, but I expect you’ll want to stick closer to downtown unless you have a rental car and want to go exploring.
What kind of things do you like to do? Active stuff (running, hiking, kayaking, etc), museums, bars/breweries/distilleries?
We like to be active and also love trying new foods/fun restaurants. Breweries sound like fun as well!
If you won’t have a car, I’d just stay downtown and Uber as needed. If you have a car you could stay up in the Domain for cheaper probably, but still in a cool area. Hiking/running/kayaking is easy to do from downtown.
There are dozens and dozens of breweries around. Austin Beerworks and Independence are more centrally located. If you have a car out in Dripping Springs is Jester King which is fantastic, but it’s a long way there.

This is timely! I'll be in Austin from the 21st-25th of this month before heading to Waco for a few days - I'll let you know if we stumble across any must-see things or restaurants you can't miss
