Carson King, a 24 year old former student at Iowa State, was holding up a sign with "Busch Lite Needs Replenishment" and his venmo info within view of the cameras at the Iowa v Iowa State game. Within a short period he had $400 in his account. He decided to do better with the money and donate it to the Children's Hospital next to the stadium (after buying a case of beer, of course.) Word got out and his donations are now at $20K. Busch heard about it and said they'd match. Then Venmo joined in the fun and will also match. He's going to keep collecting through the end of the month but as of the timing of the article they're at $60K between him and the two companies matching.

This is local for me so we get regular updates, as of this evenings news he’s up over $800k in donations after the matches by Busch and Venmo. 🙌🏼 This is a great short piece on it: www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/27648629
There’s a 0% chance that College Gameday doesn’t talk about it this morning since it originated on their program last week, so those donations are going to climb even higher. Good on him for starting this in motion. Maybe some other enterprising (and do-gooding) souls will carry it on to different charities for the rest of the season.
It is especially nice since he is donating to the hospital in the rival town. I love that Busch Light and Venmo jumped on. It has been brilliant PR for them.
This is also local to me and it has been fun to see it evolve.

Tweet from Busch Beer. They put his face on the cans. Hey @carsonking2 , we said we’d send you a year’s worth of Busch Light, but first we had to make sure the cans were fit for a King. Let us know where to send the truck. #IowaLegend
This is amazing. I think most college students (myself included at that age) would have taken the money a ran. It’s nice to see that there is still some good in the world.
For those following this story, but not local or huge football fans, this Children’s Hospital is also the home of “The Wave” that got viral attention a few years ago. Everyone in the stadium still stops and waves to the kids in the Children’s Hospital after the first quarter of every home game.
It’s been so fun watching this unfold this week! I think he was even on Good Morning America (or one of the other morning shows) this morning.
ETA: We have a local bar that is donating $1 per Busch Light sold this weekend, too.
I'm pretty sure Busch was the unofficial party beer when I was at Iowa State.
It’s still the preferred beer of small town Iowa, irregardless of age.🤢 Tap #1 basically everywhere in Eastern IA.
My cousin's bar in Mitchellville has Bud and Bud light as their 2 best sellers. I keep telling her that if she stops stocking the nasty, cheap stuff and brings in a better beer, they will buy it because they are lazy and don't want to drive to the next town over for their beer. I don't think she even has Busch as an option. We drank Busch at ISU b/c you could get a case of it for under $10 back in the 90s; once I could buy my own beer, I stopped drinking it.
This makes me so happy. <3 It makes up for waking up at 6AM to watch GameDay here in Portland (and wondering why Gameday really matters) and that weird AF game. And much less of a crushed burn than that sign about how Ames sucks so much even the Mayor left.

If anyone’s paying attention with everything else going on...
And it’s all over...racist Social Media posts have surfaced and AB is cutting their ties. I have no idea how to post a link, but the story’s out there.
ETA: I guess this is now a thing. Game Day is going to be nearby this weekend and a guy is all over NextDoor saying he’s planning something similar but for veterans. Not sure if this changes his plans at all.
Besides reading headlines I haven’t paid much attention to all of this hoopla, but I do live in the state. I did not think it was necessary to go through his twitter feed to find something from 12 years ago and then publish it. Seems like it was done for clicks. He was a minor. He became “famous” because he donated some venmo money. I haven’t seen the tweets, but from what I read they were retweets of Tosh2.0 and also racist. But again the reporter had to dig for years to find them. It seemed unnecessary to put it out there to “cancel” him. He was in the news for doing something generous. Not because he was trying to become famous or have any sort of opinion. Just found a silly way to fundraiser a whole bunch of money.
It could have instead been used as a learning experience for Carson. Someone talking to him about how he has this in his twitter feed, how it is wrong/hurtful/ etc. How he needs to reflect on his behavior when he was 16 years old. His response to all of his has been very professional and remorseful.
But now the good nature of the fundraising is over.
And then come to find out the reporter that did the digging, has a whole bunch of homophobic and racists tweets as well in his past. It is a fucking mess.

Agreed. Its a mess. He isn't trying to hold office or anything. He did something nice with this windfall of money he came across from generous people. He could have shut his mouth and pocketed all of it. Instead he coordinated a fundraiser of $1 mill + for the rival team's childrens hospital. He gains nothing from all of this. And he has handled himself with class and responded well for the backlash of it all.
I just don't understand the motivation of that DM Register reporter. Especially after all his tweets came out. I bet he regrets that decision since he likely will not have a job by the end of the day.
Being an Iowa person also it is dominating my twitter and facebook feeds.
I heard about this on the radio this am (the tweet stuff). The host made a good point. He said something like "we've all done stupid stuff at 16. It's in the past and maybe he truly chnaged as a person and is making amend. You know, by raising over a million for a children's hospital."
And that is so true. What more do we want from kids that make dumb mistakes? I don't mean rapists and the like who deserve jail time. But for a kid to have quoted a racist comedian? He can't even do an amazing charitable act 8 years later without this popping up?

For soooooooooooooo many reasons I'm so relieved social media did not exist when I was a teenager.
They played his apology on the radio this morning. His apology sounded sincere and appropriately contrite and I hope this will not sour him trying to do good. I don't really understand the end game for this reporter.
