I bet he just couldn't take it any more. There are subtle hints throughout his good-bye speech about impartiality, focusing on facts, etc. He probably asked to be let out of his contract because of how skewed Fox has become - he just couldn't live with it anymore. They probably had him sign a cooperation and good-reputation release to get out of his contract and a big balloon payment of what he would otherwise have been paid through the end plus retirement and some.
but damn, those poor pea-brained fox viewers - their last bastion of hope for reason and sensibility has crumbled.
I don't remember where I saw this, but I saw something about Murdoch meeting with Barr in response to Trump's complaints that Fox isn't taking his side. So maybe Murdoch pushed out Smith for that reason? If I can find the article I'll post it.
ETA: I think I might have read it here in another thread, so maybe someone else can clarify.

I think I saw reference to it in one of the daily Trump threads.
A. Trump is sick of your polls. B. Shep needs to stop speaking in facts.
Next day, Shep departs. They are so obvious. I think they believe that these episodes carry an implicit threat to keep people in line. Except they are stupid and corrupt and not very aware of the co equal branch of government that all have eyes and ears and will call out abuses of power. Only a minority of Americans have drunk the trump koolaid.
