Actually, I'd ask her mom (H's sister), but you know.
I want something like this, but without the insane price tag.
I don't know how to sew. I can't ask my mom for obvious reasons. H's mom can make it for us, but she's so behind on sewing projects that we might get it in a year. So, this brings us to H's 13 year old niece who lives in UT.
H's sister makes her kids earn their own money for extra curricular activities. The 13 yo likes riding horses, so it's an expensive hobby. She's an incredible seamstress and makes things to sell at craft fairs anyway.
If I were to contact H's sister and ask if it's ok for H's neice to make this for us? Obviously, I'd have her price out the job and pay her for her time and materials.
H doesn't think it's fair because there are 4 other kids in their family that we wouldn't be buying something from, but I don't want to pay $200 for this and I don't want to wait till next year either. It seems like a win win situation, but what do I know about kids...
you can't ask one kid unless you equally ask other kids, too. i'd ask johlise or something
I disagree - unless all 5 kids sew, then it isn't unfair. And I don't think you would need to go out of your way to find something all the kids can do to earn money. For all you know, the other kids don't have expensive hobbies or they get plenty of money doing other things. In any case, since this mom thinks through things enough to teach her kids about money like this, she probably also teaches them that not everyone makes the same amount of money all the time

I would think it's okay. Is she the best sewer? Then I agree with amanda, that it should be a life lesson to the other kids that because she's the best/most capable of the job, that she gets it and the money

OMG! ive been eyeing this exact cover for more than a year and decided i would get it for Wally this year, even with the $$$ pricetag. If you find a nextie willing to make you one, I would love to order one as well!! i has no skillz.
I would ask since it's not a "favor," you are willing to pay her for her work and I bet she would get a BIG thrill that you "commissioned her" for the job (definitely use that word, it will make her feel so cool). If you ARE concerned, then ask them mom first if she feels its ok to ask.
