We currently have 2 iPads, one is about 3 years old and the other one is about 7 years old. Both of them are only good for streaming videos at this point in their lives. They won’t download any videos, the older one won’t download apps, and using the web is useless on either of them because they’re too slow to load any pages. I have a $250 Target gift card and we’re thinking of purchasing an IPad 7 for grown up use only (the 2 iPads have been relegated to the kids). H wants to look at getting an IPad Air or IPad Pro. I think the basic 7 is fine. I’m frustrated that our IPads, especially the newer one, don’t really work well and am a bit leary of getting a new one that may stop working in 2-3 years. If you have IPads, how long did they work before experiencing issues?
We just debated this exact thing. We needed 2 new kid iPads. Ended up getting the basic iPad (7th gen) for them, but agreed that if they were for adults, we’d upgrade and get the nicer ones. The 7th gen has an A10 processor, and the mini/air/pro has the A12. The a10 is already a few years old, but we figured that was fine for kids.
Well DH is getting me a new basic iPad for Christmas because my 8 year old basic one is finally beyond use. So I can’t relate to them being useless after 2-3 years. 🤣. I don’t use it for much other than watching Netflix, Hulu, and stuff like that and browsing the web. The reason I need a new one is because Hulu isn’t supported any more and I can’t download Disney+.

We are finally getting a new one because our 7 year old is too old for Netflix and streaming through our cable provider. We got the basic one- I can’t imagine why I would need more.
I think our iPad is 7 years old, and it mostly still works fine. We mainly use it for streaming Netflix or Amazon Prime, a little web browsing, and some kid games. Relatively light use overall. It occasionally freezes, which is annoying, and we actually just decided to get a new one on Target's Black Friday sale so we won't be caught without one if it dies. But we're planning to to keep using the old one as long as it keeps going.
We’re debating this too. My iPad mini is so far gone it’s worthless. We really just need it for occasional kid YouTube videos. Is a 7 the cheapest option? Any great cyber Monday deals?

Both of ours are too old to download apps. They’re probably 7 years old at this point. So they can manage Netflix but not anything that wasn’t already on them. So many tears about Disney plus.
But I don’t want to buy my 4 year old a $$$ iPad just because Apple decided ours are too old?
Thanks everyone for your replies. We ended up getting an IPad 7 from Target. I don’t use the IPad much for browsing, but it’s nice to have an extra device because we share a computer. Hopefully this one lasts a bit longer than the others.
If anyone else is looking, we've been happy with our Samsung tablets. To my knowledge they don't stop pushing out updates like Apple. It has a kids mode app that locks it down to certain apps and a timer too of you want.
H got my an iPad Air and I never used it so we "gave" it to DD to use in place of her Kids Kindle Fire tablet. My H has an iPad Pro. Both are great and we have no issues downloading anything.
I am a huuuuuge Mac fan but I know 0% about iPads, lol. I live on my iPhone and my MacBook Air and that is all I need in life.
