Ulterior motive: I'm looking for ideas, because none of the methods we used in the past will work in our new place.
Growing up, we hung our stockings with ribbon from the stairway railing.
In one of our past apartments, we hung them on the wall with Command hooks; in another apartment, our entertainment center had a shelf high enough that we could use mantel hooks.
Now, we have no stairs; Command hooks take the paint off the wall when the adhesive is removed; and our new entertainment center is too low to use the mantel hooks.

Growing up, we just had nails in the wall lining the doorway into the living room. With 7 stockings to hang, they pretty much took up the entire doorway. Nails stayed in the wall year round. Not super classy, but the walls had horrible 70s era dark faux wood paneling, so the nails were the least of the decor issue. 😋
Now, we have a metal fireplace surround, so I use magnetic hooks to hang up the stockings.
We currently have a fireplace so they go on the mantle. In our old apartment we tacked them on the door frame, on the sides of the door not the top of the door.

We never had stockings growing up (in apartments, though it was only because it just wasn’t a tradition for my parents). Now we hang them on our staircase.
I can’t believe the Command stuff takes of your paint! I love their stuff because of how easy they are so that makes me sad for you. Glad you found another solution.

In our last house, we put two penny (thin) nails in the wall where there were studs, and then tied a piece of ribbon or rope between them, and tied the loops on the stockings at intervals to keep them apart. Now, we have a dog who thinks hanging things are his to pull down, so we just pass them out on Christmas morning.
I’m guessing you don’t have a fireplace? We are finally in a house with one, so Dh installed hooks under our mantle, but in previous houses we used the stairs- I would wrap garland around the bannister and hang stockings from there.

Only E has one, and it's hanging off the pantry doorknob, which is basically in our main living area. When I was a kid we just put them outside our bedroom door.
I learn something new here all the time. This year I learned that people actually hang their stockings. I always assumed this was a movie thing. We have always draped ours over the couch on Christmas Eve. Then they "sit" on the couch when full. When we used to get stockings at my grandparents' house, we'd find those on the stairs. All houses had fireplaces, so I guess I've also learned my family were too lazy to install hooks! 😂
When I was a kid (under 14): hooks under a mantle over a fireplace we never used.
Teen (14)-mid 20s: hung on chairs at the table
Late 20s-present (34)- shelf with hooks underneath behind the fireplace.
My house:
Apartment: we didn't do stockings
Rented condo: on our chairs at the table
At my current house: stocking hooks on the window sill next to the tree. We don't put them out until after DS (3.5) is in bed Christmas Eve night though.
We use weighted stocking holders to hang them on our peninsula bar in the kitchen. It faces the dining/living room and it looks festive- we spread lighted garland along the counter top weaves around the stocking holds.
We have no fireplace, stairs or big windows, etc. textured walls mean no command hooks either.

In front of the fireplace, permanent hooks out of sight under the mantel. We hang socks through, not stockings, so they don't take up much space, or look all that fun and festive to put out ahead of time.
Throughout the Christmas season they are tacked to the wall with clear tacks. I use the same holes every year. On Christmas morning we walk downstairs to find them stuffed, and laying on the floor. We don't have anywhere to mount hooks that would be strong enough to hold stuffed stockings. Growing up ours were always on the floor, too.
