I started a job about 6 months ago with an after school enrichment program for grades 1-5. I love it. I am interested in learning more about child development, how to work with behavior issues, and working in a group with that age. I have no formal training so any resources or book suggestions would be great!

I get new NAEYC releases with my membership, but I honestly have not had time to read many. They’re all quality. if you haven’t read a book on the topic, they are very informative. If you know a fair amount, there might just be bits that are novel. Check them out. You can even get a reasonably priced membership that will get you your choice if YC (Young Children) professional journal or TYC (teaching young children) with practical ideas. That can be a way to stay current without reading a whole book.

Most of what I learned about working with kids that have disruptive behaviors was on the job and from my coworkers. The most effective things to do are form a relationship with them (as much as possible), to make your rules/boundaries clear and to always follow through on what you say.
I liked Positive Classroom Discipline by Fred Jones. Each person tends to have their own favorite though. I also had a professional development on Consistency Management & Cooperative Discipline that helped shape how I run a classroom.
