Part of my job is invoicing product, i came across a contest where i register these sales over a period of time. I was informed today that i won an all expense paid trip for 2 to Mexico.
Would you just accept the trip or let your boss know that you would like to go, but understand that the trip is essentially belongs to him

From my perspective you absolutely have to tell your boss...but I’ve always worked for either non-profits or the government so my viewpoint on allowability is absolutely skewed. I hope you get to go!!
I’m not sure I understand. Your boss makes the sales, or you make the sales? Is it a contest for making the most sales? If you’re not making the sales, how are they being “credited” to you?
So someone else sold a product, you created invoices for the sales. You found a contest and entered what you invoiced for the contest and won? Did your boss know you were entering the contest?
I think regardless, you probably need to let your boss know.
If OP had nothing to do with the sales except invoice them, on what planet would OP think she won the contest? Unless it’s an invoicing contest, the salesperson won, regardless of who entered the contest. I’m still confused by the question.
Is this contest sponsored by your company or another company? It sounds like another company. Does your company know about it? This is pretty clear ethics issue and yes, you absolutely have to tell your boss about it. At my company, accepting this prize would be a huge ethics violation.
Even if you are making the sales yourself you need to tell your boss. In most companies just taking the trip without telling anyone would have huge repercussions, and likely cost you your job.
I don’t fully understand the situation so my thoughts/feelings may not be fully applicable here, but...I work in sales, and if I had entered a contest where I had to register my sales with a third party, thereby giving this third party data regarding private information about how my company is performing, I would probably be fired once my company found out. Also, as the salesperson, if one of my back office personnel was registering my sales with a third party without my knowledge, I’d be livid.
I’m honestly not trying to make you feel bad, but I would probably not claim this prize.
Did you ask your boss before entering the contest? I would have and at that time we would have discussed outcomes. I agree that you won a trip kind of sounds like a scam unless this is a reputable vendor.

Eeeeeeeesh. This has bad news written all over it. Absolutely tell your boss, but be prepared they may not be pleased you entered. Regardless, this is not your trip to claim.

Is this a contest for the most invoices entered or the most sales made? Because if it’s the latter, then that would be a HUGE violation in any company I’ve worked for. Sales people can not be incentivized in this way in order to make sales.
If it’s the number of invoices entered, then it MIGHT be different...but sales still need to be made in order to generate an invoice, no? Regardless, you should have told your boss prior to entering this contest. I don’t know enough info about the contest/your company policies to give an answer as to who should be able to go on the trip.
The sales are made by myself and other people on the team, Mostly by me My boss was aware of the contest we've participated for years and have won several items over the years some hes let me keep some weight given to other people on a team
I actually forwarded the email to my boss and discuss it with him the minute I got it the decision will be made Monday who gets to go I was just curious how other people would handle it We had this issue before with gift cards and incentives that other people take advantage of and don't turn into the company
The explanation doesn’t really match the OP, but I think it’s crazy to do anything except turn over the trip to the boss. If multiple people’s sales contributed to the win, maybe the fairest thing to do would be to give the trip to the person with the most sales of the group.
As a fellow salesperson, I would not be thrilled that my sales were helping to send someone else on a trip, though. Maybe boss should raffle off the prize, with number of entries proportional to percentage of sales?
The OP definitely does not match the update and also why do you hate punctuation?
It’s kind of maddening, lol.
OPs job is entering invoices v. OP made most of the sales.
OP “found” a contest and entered it v. this has been ongoing for years.
OP is informed she won v. the sales team as a whole won.
OP wonders if she should just go on the trip (wtf?) or tell her boss v. it’s already done and boss knows.
Plus the bizarre statement that she was wondering because other salespeople have kept incentives and gift cards to themselves over the years, so maybe people would think it would be ok to secretly take a trip based largely on other people’s sales.

This person has been on my MUD radar for a minute.
You were recording sales made by your company. Presumably you were also doing this on company time? This trip belongs to your company. Your boss should award it I. Whatever way he would award any other bonus or incentive.
