Reading for literacy week in my kids’ classrooms. Any suggestions for new and funny books? I have done shel Silverstein poems, rock, paper, scissors, mother Bruce, book with no pictures, press here....
My kids liked Because by mo willems though it was different from his other books. Interrupting Chicken is fun too. Snowy day is good for second. I read it then too.
For 5th graders only you might consider something like Hatchet. It is more mature but very fast paced.
My boys classes both LOVED Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups. I use a squeaky little voice for the penguin and they think it’s hilarious. I read it to them in 2nd grade and the kids who are in his class this year requested that I read it again this year.
Who Wet My Pants is new and very funny. So is The VERY Impatient Caterpillar.
Yes yes yes to Who Wet My Pants. Anything by Bob Shea is fabulous. Harold and Hog Pretend For Real by Dan Santat. It's a parody of Elephant and Piggie Truman is adorable and fun. Llama Destroys the World would be fun for second. I can't keep it on the shelves.
Robert Munsch books are great for that age, and our all-time favourite funny book is Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems. I teach 7th and the kids were killing themselves laughing when I read it to them (I often bring in my 3.5 year old daughter’s books to mix things up a bit).

The other one that my 7s loved was P is for Pterodactyl, but that may be too old for even the 5s.
Not funny, but I recently read "before she was Harriet"(tubman) aloud at my kid's class. We talked about how they inverted the traditional chronological biography by going back in time. How they gave more depth to a famous American who is often discussed in classrooms for only a slice of what she did. It starts her in old age, power and wisdom, walking back through her time as a union general, a spy, leading people to freedom, etc. By the time you find her as a young slave girl you can also see her future strength and journey.
