Sort of - I was a supervisor and left for a (non-supervisor) job at another company, since I was miserable. Less than two years later, I came back to the original company at a lower, non-supervisor level. It was a fantastic move it turned out (but I had the weird situation of actual getting paid more when I came back to a lower position).
I'm a fed debating the move from a 14 to a 15, and what you've described are what has held me back. We had a few managers in OGC to this, for the reasons you've described and no one has batted an eye.

DH did this. He was a manager for a short time and didn't like it. Also, it was hard on our marriage because we worked together, so it was very awkward that he was expected to keep secrets from me. He stepped down after just a few months.
My dad wanted to step down from management when I was in high school. Nobody would hear of it, so he took like a 50% pay cut to go to a different company where he wouldn't have to manage people.

I’m a fed attorney. There are some attorneys in my office who used to be managers. It hasn’t been strange at all. Most of our managers used to be line attorneys in the office, and they could switch back at any time.
Just for update, I talked to my boss and a few of my reports. Taking a step down is a nonstarter right now. Plus, my reports said it wouldn't work out how I thought b/c I would just end up handling a lot of the same things and have no control over decisions. It's a small office.
Sigh.... but my boss was understanding. I did go ahead and put applications in at a few other places for nonmanagerial positions. I really need to learn how to care less and 'turn it off' after work.
