DD is obsessed with kids bop. In my quest to educate her on “real” music, we’ve been playing stuff from “the olden days” and to a large extent, the old country (from my dad.. Ireland)
Tonight was Jimi Hendrix and Elvis. What else would you add to the agenda? (We’ve had Irish music 100% covered for years.)
I like the suggestions above. DS (11) recently discovered Coldplay. You could also consider The Police, Tom Petty, Sam Cooke, Jack Johnson, Kelly Clarkson....these are some of the other “oldies” that they replay.
My kids find and like the most eclectic stuff. They love the songs “Secret Agent Man” and “Rico Suave”. And pretty much any disco. They both also like county music. I would figure out what she likes on Kids Bop and play her the real stuff.
A random funny music thing. Last night at dinner, playing “Chopsticks” on the piano came up. We were eating with chopsticks, so I’m sure that had something to do with it. Anyway, DD said “Oh! Grandpa has the music for that on the piano!” Grandpa was an accomplished classical pianist. The music he left on the piano before he died is something by Chopin. Chopin/Chopsticks, it’s all the same thing.
We bought DS a sound system for his truck. He likes old school type country. However, he wanted to make it thump so I said, let me hook my phone up. Cue Metallica, Crue, and then some Ice Cube. But he's 16. Not really child appropriate. But the speakers were thumping. He now has Zeppelin and ACDC on his list, so he's coming over to my side slowly.
I play Enya when I do yoga. Otherwise we are OK with newer artists, but we typically go through them by artist.
Beatles and Elton John I would ditto. Michael Jackson, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, John Denver. Newer artists: Train, Walk the Moon, T-Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Miley Cyrus, Daughtry, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, U2. Soundtracks: Frozen, Moana, Hamilton, Sing, Movin Out, Mamma Mia
On Valentine’s Day for our family dinner, we went totally cheesy (and from our childhoods) but ended up being enjoyable: Hall and Oates Lionel Richie Kenny Rogers And then they boys requested “heavy metal” and we played a fewVan Halen songs. Ha!
Both my kids like imagine Dragons for current stuff.
We also listen to what we want in the car, and so the boys have never expected “kid music”. We often play Coldplay, u2, the local indie NPR station, Keane, 80s stuff, etc.
Watch out on JB! We picked up by boys from my parents house and they had been listening to music on the TV with readable lyrics. it ended up on a Jimmy Buffet song I hadn’t heard before, DS was being silly and end up reading the lyrics out loud, which got awkward.

My 5 year old sings Rico Suave. Lol. We left awkward several months ago! I remember my dad almost falling down in the bathroom laughing when I was little because I was singing all the lyrics to José Cuervo. I was about 8. I come from a long line of kids who sing utterly inappropriate music. With that being said, I would wait a few years for “Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw”.
Beatles and Zeppelin. My boys also love the White Stripes (probably because I love the White Stripes lol). They listened to a ton of Nirvana because DH is a huge fan. We listen to almost anything other than stuff with lots of bad words. You can usually find clean versions of most albums on the streaming services. We also listen to a lot of movie and broadway soundtracks - the latest we discovered was Jesus Christ Superstar. My kids sometimes like 80’s stuff (A-Ha I think) but that is all DH. I also play a lot of classical because I play the piano and like to make sure the kids know what the songs are actually supposed to sound like lol.
Also, I need to actually start being more careful about this because DS1 (who is 9) has an uncanny ability to memorize song lyrics after hearing them just a couple of times. So he actually listens to the words which probably knocks a lot of my regular music off the list.
We listen to uncensored music with the kids. There are some songs that are a little too much and we'll skip, but I don't mind a curse word here or there. But I also swear in front of them and they know not to repeat it.
DD loves making up words she can say in place of words that are inappropriate to come out of a child.
"You can't always get what you want" by the Rolling Stones "2 Legit" by MC Hammer "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Fat Bottom Girls" by Queen "Lights" by Journey “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
DD could take or leave the Beetles (same here, kid), and DS is not a fan at all.
Music for DD is way more about the beat and the melody than the words. Some of her favorites 80s remix on the TV music channel Aqua Pink Shakira She loves the remixes on the Crazy Frog CDs Backstreet boys and NSync the old stuff not the new Some Beach Boys stuff Taylor Swift but her older stuff not the new stuff DH loves to listen to Enya to unwind. One of the older girls has her floor routine to a bunch of Ariana Grande's sounds mixed together. All the girls love her floor music They are learning about the classics in music at school, Bach, Mozart and she likes that stuff too.
