After falling off the beam at gymnastics practice back in Oct (which broke both bones in her forearm and required surgery) DD2 is finally back in the gym! We switched gyms and she’s now a level 2 pre team that will compete (but she’ll hold off for a bit). She was at her second level three practice when she got hurt so going back a bit makes sense. She seems to really like this new team and everyone has been great to her so far.
DD1 wraps up her swim season this weekend with her divisional meet. Fingers crossed for new fast times!
DS did Little League assessments last Saturday, but he was already on a team because DH is going to help coach. This is the first year that DH won't be DS's LL coach for a number of years, which I think will be good for DS. The head coach and other assistants are good guys, and it sounds like the team as a whole is going to be a good group of kids, so it should be a good season. DH went to the draft last night, and two of DS's friends from his travel team were drafted onto his LL team, so that is great. One of the friends is the one whose sister DD is really good friends with, so she will have a friend to hang out with during the games, which is great.
DD is excited to start softball next month. She's been playing catch with DH and hitting off the tee (even though she's going to play coach pitch, it is good for her to work on hand-eye coordination) to get ready. Hopefully we'll find out about her team soon. I just hope she'll know at least one girl on her team.
We are wrapping up indoor soccer and basketball this week for DD2. DD1 has playoffs for basketball, so not sure if she will have 1 or 2 weeks left.
DD2’s town soccer overlapped with basketball, so she’s missing her first 2 practices. It sounds like a stupid set-up anyway- they have 4 teams in a small basketball-court size gym for the first few sessions. So 40-50 kids in this tiny gym running soccer drills. She will join a club team this fall, and they are offering a free 10-week indoor training session, so I will sign her up for that.
I’m waiting to hear when DD1’s softball draft is taking place. We typically have our first game in mid-April, so the draft should be coming up soon.
DD is excelling during her privates with Jon. I don't know what he says to her but whatever it is she has so much more confidence during and after the private. She looks like a completely different gymnast than during her level 3 practices. They have a meet on Friday at 1pm in town and I doubt she will compete as we haven't heard anything yet. It is a no school day for her school so she is going to go and watch her teammates. A couple of the mom's already said she could go with them since I didn't sign up for the no school day care because of the meet.
Our gym is hosting optional state later this month and added on a compulsory meet onto Sunday afternoon. I'm really hoping the head coach will let DD compete in that meet at least since we are hosting it.

Ok, so tell me about this. I am (reluctantly) trying to learn how to be a gym mom. What does optional and compulsory mean? And do you mind if I ask what skills she didn't have that they required for competition? So when DD2 joined this pre team this week, they were like "hey our first meet is later this month, but if shes not ready yet we can always try later." Ummm...she did the routines ONCE back in May, she is going to need some time to learn them again. She has never competed before and I just don't know what she doesn't know - KWIM? lol!
Also, all these parents last night were like "my kid gets this many medals at a meet, and my kid scored this at state, and my kid is the youngest ever to make the team (4! Her kid was 4 and competing!)." Meanwhile - my kid is like "We can use the chalk at this gym? BEST.DAY.EVER!" Ugh, I don't think we fit in. They all seem to take it very seriously. I miss swimming.
madringal, We've been at the gym since DD was a toddler and most of this team stuff is still new to me too. Compulsory is USAG level 2-5. All the girls compete the same exact routine to the same music floor music and everything looks very military precision in my opinion. Optional is USAG level 6-10 and the routines vary depending on gymnast but each event level has skill requirement's. Optional routines look similar to what the college girls due with different degrees of complexity. Google search level 2 floor routine or beam routine and you can watch it and sometimes they even have it broken down to skills to learn the routine. We've watched a lot of beam level 3 routines on u-tube.
My DD is missing her roundoff-backhand-spring on the floor which is a huge part of the level 3 floor routine. She is also missing her front hip circle on the bars. She is still struggling with her beam dismount and the mil circle on bars. One practice she total has it and rocks and the next practice its like she hasn't ever done the skill before so not the consistence the coaches want. She can do the tumbling on the floor with a spot and has gotten much better in the last 2 weeks about being consistent but still has some wild ones where her and Jon go rolling over the floor. DD coach seems to be very concerned about her scores and not scoring well and my DD is going I don't care I just want to go out and do my stuff and have fun.
Oh my gosh, that totally answers my questions about why some girls have the same music and some do, like, Disney stuff.
DD did the level two routine as part of a showcase at her last gym, but never competed. They just learned it for that one showcase and never did them again. I will probably have to go back to having her watch those youtube videos.
I am really rooting for your DD! I feel like shes been in limbo with the team for such a long time! Hopefully it all comes together soon and she can do that home meet.
Our swim season is over! DD1 swam her divisional meet this weekend and had some great swims. Couple PRs and season bests. Tomorrow she is going to swim a time trial to lock in times for a few events she didn’t swim this weekend and then she’s home free! She doesn’t have any state qualifying times this season so she’ll get a nice long 5 week break and come back for the summer season next month.
Basketball went so much better last week. The head coach was gone, and the regular assistant coach and one other dad (who is one of DS's travel baseball coaches) coached the two games. I could tell that DS had more fun and didn't seem as worried about getting yelled at or taken out when he made a mistake. It was nice to see that the kids who usually play less time (there is no rule of fair playing time) were put in more.
DD1’s team won their playoff game, so a small tournament for the championship next weekend. She was so excited, and I was sad to miss most of the game because I was coaching DD2’s game at the same time.
DD2 was a train wreck at basketball. Crying, fouling everyone but crying if someone bumped into her, absolutely insufferable. I threw my back out 30 mins before her game last week, so the other coach ran everything, and DH said she did really well. So, I’m the problem. No more coaching for me!!
DS1’s tball season started a couple weeks ago. The practices are on Friday afternoons from 4:30-5:30, which I’m loving because it’s a day that it’s easy for one of us to get off early and take him. Plus my parents are in town this month so it’s nice to have back up for games on Saturdays - I let DH sleep in on Saturdays since he gets up at 4:45 am every weekday, so when my parents go to games with me, they help supervise the toddler and I can actually watch. Plus DS1 seems to be a lot more focused than last year. So this year has been so far so good on tball.
So DD1 swam a time trail event last night to try to lock in some best times on events she didn't have divisional cuts in and she killed it! 3 events, 3 huge time drops, 2 new divisional cuts for next season. She was on fire! She has been at an absolute stand still for her 50 free for a year. She is not a sprinter, never has been. In Feb 2019 she got a time of 33.06, in a year she had only dropped to 33.01 (most of her peers are in the low 30s/high 29s now), she just couldn't break 33. Two weeks ago, she finally went a 32.63. Not a ton of time dropped, but at least it was no longer a 33. Last night she popped off a 30.55!! Holy smokes, we all lost our minds. All the other swim parents know how hard it's been for her, and every one was so excited. I was recording the race and her best friend was jumping up and down when the time came up - it was so awesome to have everyone's reaction on video. When we left the meet she was absolutely beaming, "I can't stop smiling, mom." Heart melted. Truly no better way to end the season.
No gymnastics meet for us to host next weekend. USA Gymnastics has cancelled all meets nationwide for the next month so DD won't get a chance to compete at all this season We may also have a forced break from gymnastics if they close down schools.
Ugh, that really stinks 186momx. USA swimming did the same today. My daughter just finished her season, but so many of her friends were getting ready for state.
I completely agree that these closures and cancellations are necessary, but it stinks for the kids.

Same here...winter sports are done (playoffs canceled) and spring sports have been postponed until the first week of April (for now). I did get a notification that DS's basketball tournament that was originally scheduled for March 20 & 21 has been moved to April 18 & 19, so at least he'll still get to play it.
