But couldn't you order drive up via the website, then still use the app when you arrive? Or is the concern that people wouldn't have the app that way?
Exactly. We have hand held devices that signal when you arrive. If people didn't have the app, the only other way to know people have arrived is by a phone call and no one has time the that.
I didn't realize you had to check out through the app until I got to the store and wondered why no one was coming out to the pick up parking spot with my stuff lol
It's been great for things that I forgot on my usual shopping trip, or can't find anywhere else. I hope the perishable item pickup works out!
I did drive up for the first time for easter basket supplies. It was awesome. There was no one else there.
I know more people.than you'd think who do not have smart phones, so I cant blame target for forcing pepple to use the app to ensure that they have the right technology to use the service.
I do wish that I could have universally changed all my items to drive up at once rather than update one at a time. But maybe there is a way and I just didnt see it.
One additional safety feature my four stores are doing is we brought order pick up outside. You still have to get out of your vehicle but you come to the doors And are greeted by a team member. We then walkie into the store your name, another team member gets your order and brings it out to the front door. They way it is limiting the need to come inside.
We have also eliminating all signing on the devices for packages. You have to either show an I'D or your barcode but you do not have to touch the device.
How do employees feel about drive up right now? I know you mentioned frustration at leisure shoppers in the store. Do you feel that way about people who buy non-necessities via drive up?
Also, I did drive up for the first time last week and I put my phone in the trunk with the barcode ready. The associate seemed really thrown off by this. Could they scan through the window? Is there a better way?
Thanks! I think it's a great option but I don't want to misuse it.

I agree. I sometimes opt to shop online then switch to my phone to check out so I can do drive up.
Neither of my local Targets scan the barcode on my phone or have ever asked me to sign. They've always just (pre-covid) handed the items through my window to me or (now) place them in my trunk.
I love Drive-Up and used it frequently before Covid. I now try to limit it to things that are essential (like cleaning supplies).
Awesome! I was hoping it was a little quicker than week+ out that I'm seeing at other places. I know when I've done in store pick up before it was pretty quick, wasn't sure if it was still the same.
Thanks!
Just a heads up if you’re looking at getting groceries, ours will add some dry and canned goods but the selection is weird (like I might be able to get cool ranch Doritos but not nacho...just weird things they don’t make sense) and no cold items. I don’t know if super targets with full grocery areas offer that or not.
H works on the team that does coding for this stuff. He said it’s based on supply and demand. If the store has x amount of nacho Doritos and expects to sell all on them in store based on historical data they have to turn it off as an option for pick up.

Yes they can scan it through the window, although it doesn’t seem common from what I’ve noticed.
This thread is super helpful! I hadn't thought to do this at all. I've looked at the Target website several times to see if they could ship stuff to me (they couldn't, it was all hot items like TP) but things have been available for pickup and I guess I didn't realize that meant I could order them and drive up to get them - I was thinking I'd have to go into the store and hope the items were still there when I arrived.
This sounds like a great system. spindle92, do you feel like Target has been taking care of their employees during all this? I guess that's a hard question to answer "no" to publicly lol. But I have ethical concerns about continuing to use Amazon right now and can get basically the same stuff from Target, so I'd rather go there in the future if they are doing this better.

Huh. She was trying to insist that she scan my phone and I kept trying to communicate that it was in my trunk (without rolling down my window) and it was kind of a cluster. In the end it was ok but just trying to figure out the best way to keep everyone safe. Will try through the closed window next time.

Grear questions. I'm not ignoring you, I just want to get on my computer so I can properly answer you.

Be back in a bit.
Oh man I’m also wondering about this now! I used it today for the first time to get some more “frivolous” stuff like chalk and stickers to keep my kid entertained. I figured people would prefer that then seeing me walk around the store with those kind of items haha. Is there a limit on pick up orders though? I haven’t done grocery pick up because I know those are very limited spots, but I assumed target pick up was unlimited since it’s always available so it’s not like I’m taking it away from someone who really needs it.
My store had a ton more pick up spots then they typically do. They had a tent set up and red tape and cones marking the stalls.

Sorry for the delay, 12 - 14 hour days are kicking my butt.
In a nut shell - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use drive up!
There is no rule or idea that drive up is only for families, elderly, the sick……..
And no, we do not care what you order - essentials or not. Hell, order an entire case of silly string. If it keeps you out of the store, go buck wild.
Order pick up is the next preferred method but people have the mindset of “oh I am in the store already to pick up my order so I might as well wander around the store.”
(and yes we have people tell us everyday that they are bored at home and just came to Target to roam around.)
As I mentioned earlier, my stores have moved order pick up outside to try and keep the numbers down of people still entering the store. It is not 100% successful but we are trying.
We have an entire team (called flex) dedicated to picking/shopping for drive ups and order pick up. They are target employees but they are in black shirts as opposed to the normal target red. The hope is that guests will not stop them to ask random questions. (doesn’t always work though.) The more guests that are in the store shopping, the more difficult it is for the flex team to fill orders in a timely fashion.
In Vermont and Michigan, the Gov’s have ordered the stop of non essential items so ¾ of the store has been roped off. Ideally we would like that to happen to all of the stores but that is a pipe dream. In those stores, the flex teams are posting record times in getting drive ups ready because they are not having to fight crowds.
In regards to putting the phone in your trunk, I guess it depends on if your trunk door was actually open when the team member arrived or did they still have to touch the door to raise it?
If it was wide open, then I see no issues at all.
Sometimes our devices will allow us to scan thru a window but most of the time, the glare won’t allow the device to read the barcode on your phone. (This is a real problem on sunny days. Sometimes team members have to go out with an umbrella just to shield the sunlight from the device.) Also, if you have any kind of coating on your car windows - the device can't read the barcode. Our devices are finicky little buggers.
Before the virus, we would have all guests sign the device for their order to confirm they received it but we have bypassed that now so that there is no need to touch anything.

Nope there is no limit on the # of orders you can place. We have people place several orders a day and then drive up at the end of the day and get all their orders at once.

I do feel that they have been taking care of us. Of course there are areas that are not 100% perfect but I think in general they are doing great.

spindle92 Thank you to you and all employees who work stores to keep people fed and obtaining essentials (and not so essential. Looking at you big bag of Twix from my last pick up) I’m sorry that people put you all at risk to wander around the store. I exclusively use pick up at both target and Walmart and try to use it only once a week because I was afraid the workers would judge me for using it too often. Lol.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
spindle92 thank you so much! I am really excited for this service and I feel even better about it now. I'm also glad that you feel like Target has your backs.
Thanks to this post I just added 6 things to my target cart and will surely add more throughout the day tomorrow. I keep forgetting about their drive up!
I’ve loved Target pick up since the holidays as it keeps me out of the store buying stuff I wasn’t planning on.
Just an FYI I’ve had it where an item was in stock to pickup but then wasn’t there, and they will ship it instead and wave the minimum fee. So I had a small bottle of vanilla shipped just the other day. I wasn’t in a super hurry for it, so that worked out. I think I’ve had this happen with a few things since the pandemic started.
I will also say I did curb side pick up at Michaels today and it was super easy. Oh and I do curbside for groceries at Walmart forever and that’s finally having spots open up. Basically I hate getting out of my car.
I love drive up. It’s the highlight on my 9 year olds day when I place an order and we go pick it up. She hasn’t been anywhere other than our house or yard since mid-March so she’s loving the drive. We blast the radio and sing way too loud.
*we don’t get out, we don’t interact with anyone. They have been able to scan my phone through the window, I pop my trunk remotely, bag goes in, I close trunk remotely.*
i LOVE target drive up. We do it a lot. Most of the time lately they dont even scan my phone.
Its amazing!
spindle92, why is this? The phone scanning seems to be inconsistent. 2 weeks ago they didn't scan my phone and I was thrilled; then the other day the did want to scan the phone and I wasn't prepared. I'm curious if staff have discretion officially, or if they're just .... being flexible on their own.

They are definately being lazy and just deciding on their own. Scanning the phone comes straight from corp.
I wanted to place a pickup order for things like frames and other random household decor items since I've got the time to finish decorating but kind of felt like an asshole. lol But I absolutely won't go in the store, so I wasn't sure what to do.
