Parts of the country that weren’t hit that hard seem very ‘business as usual’ these days. Or at least that’s how it appears on people’s social media.
I’m in NJ in a suburb of NYC - very hard hit area. Sill bad but new cases/hospitalizations/deaths are going down finally because we’ve all been in our homes for 2+ months. Things are VERY slowly starting to open up but everyone is still very cautious, everywhere people have masks on and schools opening in September is still a huge question mark.
I’m still super concerned and feel like our numbers are going to start going up again when people are out and about.

I’m also in NJ right outside of NYC. Up until last weekend we hadn’t left our apartment in 9 week. We drove to my parents’ summer home last weekend (they live in Fla) and were shocked how different the social distancing is only an hour from where we live.
We are not ready to interact with others yet. I think even when things open up we won’t rush in. Our area is very hard hit.

We're just outside of Philly. We're still under SIP orders ("Red Level" according to our governor). Supposedly, we're supposed to move to "Yellow Level" in a couple of weeks (no more SIP, retail stores can open with curbside pickup, but things like salons, gyms, movie theaters still closed).
I’m in Florida and, living if up to our reputation, we are fucking this up. My county was not hard hit but we have plenty who commute to a county that was.
I went to the grocery store today and they were out of the beer my H wanted so I went to the liquor store they have next door and I was the only person beside the cashier that had on a mask of 15ish people. Plenty of people in the regular store with no masks, kids, employees with them down around their necks. From what I see on Facebook most people are seeing friends, eating out, Going to the gym and for haircuts, business as usual.
Our lovely governor has released camps and sports to open up this summer and it’s going to be really hard in this house telling the kids all they can’t do when their friends that they are in touch with are going to be having fun experiences. If baseball opens for a summer season (normally we end in May because it’s so hot), it’s going to be a big fight between my H and I.

Word for word this. People here think it’s all made up and we need to get back to normal. Youth sports are allowed to start on June 1. Like, high school kids will be doing summer baseball practice. It’s crazy.

I live in a very rural state. Not super hard hit initially, and we started opening up a few weeks ago. Parts of our state, especially the eastern part near Baltimore and DC, are now experiencing a surge in cases. I have no doubt we’ll continue to see a spike in cases over the next couple of weeks.
I live in the biggest college town in my state, and if we don’t see a spike soon, I have no doubt we’ll see a spike in late August when the students are back.
ETA: very few people are wearing masks. They are all “You can’t make me! Freedom! ‘Mercia!” I hate people.

South Texas is business as usual too. Long lines to get into Ross and traffic backed up already to get to the beach for the long weekend. I would guess mask usage is 30% of people.

We went from complete shut down to everything is open in the last two weeks. Even banquet halls can open next week. Most people aren’t wearing masks except at Costco. Many are still complaining and acting like it is an American problem and not a world wide pandemic. It’s crazy. Our family is still following the recommendations but has added outdoor visits with friends for the girls and I (bike rides, creeking, tennis). The girls will start swim team next week with 3 to a lane at an outdoor pool. We won’t start open swim until we see how it goes. For summer camp, many of the local camps are offering camp in a box for purchase. I plan to purchase a couple of these and do our own camp activities with close friends to limit our exposure but still offer some normalcy.

We are still mostly sheltering here in my community, with some small block party or back yard style gatherings outdoors, but I am seeing post of people in the wider area going out for graduation dinners with family, and other nonsense. Pence came to visit us today, not to talk to the CDC, the logical choice for someone in charge of a pandemic, but to talk to Waffle House. I watched the conference on live stream, and it was a you are great, thank you for your sacrifice, thoughts and prayers, good luck to you, we have to re-open, it's important festivus. Not a mention of the actual numbers and how they compare with other places, which are not as bad as you would think, but not at all good.

It’s weird where I am in MA. Masks are common and my sense is that people are taking this very seriously in enclosed spaces though, full disclosure, I’ve barely left the house and am basing this more on DH’s reports about the outside world. Businesses are starting to reopen but they do seem to be limiting interaction and keeping a lot of restrictions. We are in phase 1 but I don’t think people expect that to change for a while. I think cases are declining but nowhere near where they need to get. Now that the weather is better, though, I feel like people are starting to branch out more outdoors and I think the physical distancing is getting more lax. More walks with friends and things where maybe you’re 6 feet apart most of the time? So it’s not as egregious as in some states, but not as locked down as it was a month ago. I worry that we are going to go too fast as people try to get back out there.
Central Arkansas. We weren’t hit hard and never did a shelter in place. Restaurants, pools, everything has opened or is opening very soon. Things are back to normal. Our numbers have already jumped a huge amount (to us) just in the last 2 days.
I’ve gone to a gas station twice in the last few weeks and was the only person wearing a mask both times.
Wisconsin’s conservative Supreme Court struck down the safer at home order from our democratic governor so there are no rules here anymore. Do whatever the hell you want.
So far, I’m surprised at the self-imposed rules that business and people have stuck to. Our library will not open yet, many restaurants are still take out only, some retail shops are still just closed. Our gym will not reopen for two weeks. Masks on about 50% of people in stores. Some neighbor kids play together but only outside (the previous norm was running in/out of houses all day). Summer camps all voluntarily closed.
Cases continue to rise and the percentage of positive tests is stagnant.
Morale is low in my house. We are following a self-imposed stay at home order and there have been lots and lots of tears (mostly from my 7 year old but from me too).

I live in a small town in southern Arizona. To start we had very few cases due to lack of availability of testing. Today the NYT listed us as a possible next hotspot. I am a teacher so I have been home since March 13. My husband is an electrician and has been out working every day. Today our cases jumped up by 96 and 3 additional deaths. A coworkers wife is an ER doctor at the local hospital, she told our group today that there are 2 beds left in the ICU and they expect them to be filled in the next 12 hours.
My frustration is that my husband is very nonchalant about it, he thinks we need to get back to normal. He thinks we have nothing to worry about because we have 100,000 people and 600 positive tests so that’s still only 6 in every 1,000 so nbd. I am so frustrated.
eta: businesses are starting to open. Bars and restaurants are open, stores are starting to open. Ross has lines out the door, a lot of old people running around no masks.
Northern Virginia. We are still phase 0 while rest of state is phase one. Testing is practically not happening in my county. Hospital capacity seems OK, daily increases in cases is below 3% mostly (but see above, testing criteria is still incredibly narrow, you need dr order), I’d say 95% of ppl wear masks indoors, and people try to stay away from me when I’m exercising outdoors.
However, I’ve definitely been on hikes where it was clear several families were doing a meet up, teens congregate, etc.
@ Our summer camps and public pools for my county are cancelled and school board sent out email today that while they were considering all the options, the most likely scenario is 100% distance learning. Still. My son has learning disabilities & thus far distance learning has not offered him the services he needs
I feel beat down and insanely jealous that others are going out & about, seeing friends & loved ones, and generally having a future that isn’t in their homes. I do recognize my privilege that I’m not frantic about finances & I’m not in an abusive household & we can safely get food. I guess I’m just having a wee pity party.

I’m in coastal NJ, people are mostly taking it seriously here. Masks are required inside any business and few businesses are open. We’re slowly beginning to reopen and I’m nervous, despite knowing that the numbers are looking better than they have in a long time.
It seems like people are getting a lot more lax about kids hanging out with friends, but my family is nowhere near ready to consider that yet. We are now seeing grandparents out in backyards with masks on, that we started over the past few weeks, but that will be it for a while.

We haven’t hit our peak, but it’s “slow” enough (approximately 100 cases per day) that it isn’t devastating. Our county has the highest rate of CV19 cases on the entire west coast, yet people keep going on about it being fake and “it’s been here since October so we’ve already had it even without quarantine and we’ve been fine”. We haven’t crossed 100 deaths yet. I thought it was bad before but now with Memorial Day and summer knocking on our door it feels like people forgot there’s a legitimate global pandemic happening. Why is everybody rushing to reopen to the level of normalcy of “before”? The virus hasn’t disappeared.
63% of our county’s workforce is “essential” and requires work out of the home. It’s never felt “real” here- our county has far from been shut down and feels as busy and bustling as ever. A friend of mine traveled here for work from a much larger populated city than ours and said it was amazing how busy our city was and how many people were out. I keep waiting for the true devastation to hit.
ETA: our whole state (WA) is in Phase 1 and they are allowing different counties to appeal to enter Phase 2 before the state’s general move to Phase 2. Several counties have received permission. I keep wondering if he can move the state to Phase 2 if our county is “failing” so miserably? Can we be the only county left behind? Lol. Maybe they’ll just trap us in our county and put us in time out. 🤷🏼♀️
I am in upstate NY and we are a week into phase 1 of reopening. Masks required in public. Cases seem stable but as soon as winter was finally over last week, the neighborhood kids are starting to get together. I don’t want to make any decisions about when to let my kids see friends outside or when to re-enter society.
Maryland in a county that’s still locked down and my brain is really struggling to reconcile that some people are KOKO and we’re not.
Same. We are seeing pretty good mask wearing the few times we’ve been out. I’m shopping in person at Aldi and they are requiring masks and counting people at the door.

Texas is opening up fast and Dallas is predicted to be the next hot spot. Woohoo. Playgrounds opened this week. Our family is still living as though we are in quarantine because we want to be able to have socially distant outdoor interactions with our parents. We’re still doing grocery pick up and WFH and kids are staying home. I’m not sure how long we will continue but I’ll let these other people be the guinea pigs to see what happens as a result of going back to normal life.

Florida is governed by a shit stain trump lover, so I’m sure you can guess how it’s going. The DOH is covering up covid stats and deaths so there’s no real gauge on how “safe” it is because the numbers don’t mean anything.
Also, shit stain just let kid camps open with zero restrictions, leaving it in the hands of the owners of camps and parents “to make good decisions”. It’s Florida , people wouldn’t know a good decision if it slapped them in the face. .
So—-we’re just staying home until the end of time.

I'm in Michigan. Things are weird as you have seen on the news the last month or so.
We are a swing district about halfway between Detroit and Lansing. Most people are wearing masks but still a good number arguing about it. Apparently my 18 year old SD spends most of her day arguing with people about wearing a mask when they come in to order (the other option being they can call from the car and have their order brought to them). Our stay at home order was extended to June 12th but some things have been loosened up. In the last day or so, they announced that non-emergency medical and dental can resume. Also veterinary (my dog needs a haircut BAD) but some groomers are reporting that they are told they need to stay closed. Auto dealerships are opening and gatherings up to 10 people are allowed now.
There is going to be a public zoom meeting with the superintendents of 3 school districts in our county including mine on the 28th to talk about possibilities for fall so I'll definitely be listening in on that.
Philadelphia. Still locked down and I'm good with that. People wear masks pretty much everywhere around here. Nothing really is open. Our cases are going down, slowly. I'm nervous they'll spike up when people go down the shore this weekend.

Can I ask you something? I have a "friend" on FB who I think works for the FL government. All he posts all day long is stats and reports on how well Florida has mitigated this. It rings hollow (maybe I'm biased bc I know he's a Trumper) but what am I missing?

I’m in MA right next to Boston. We just started minimally opening things with really strict measures - our governor has been decent with things. Masks are mandatory when outside of your house (unless you can maintain social distance like in a park) and Id say it’s around 95% compliance here. We live in an area where a lot of drs and medical professionals live (we are right by the major medical area) so I think people know to take things very seriously.
We have loosened up slightly with our friend circle. The big kids (13) are allowed to go bike riding together and we go hiking with other families - all with masks etc. I haven’t been in a store since mid March. We are already making plans with a close family to “quarantine together” (but in our own houses, seeing only each other etc) in the fall and homeschooling together because no way is school opening in September and my kids are starting to really feel the lack of socialization.
It's county-by-county in Oregon; a large number of counties have been approved to begin phase 1. One of the three counties comprising the Portland metro area was approved today, but it's not the primary Portland county. I think multnomah county might be a couple of weeks away.
Our CEO announced last week that he's not in any hurry to bring us back to the office, so I'm happy about that, but H's company wants to get rolling, so that's not comforting.
I'm very apprehensive about everything going back to normal.
