Update: The one day I decide to take the kids to the public pool guess who I see? One of the women who I posted that has been traveling all over and not quarantining. However, I think her Texas trip was probably 11 days ago and the pool does temp checks, so fingers crossed we are OK. Since our kids are friends and we are acquaintances we chatted, and like all parents right now she is feeling how hard this all is. So I do feel compassion for her and was supportive in person. I was trying to keep my distance, and she kind of was, but I think we ultimately ended up 5 feet apart and chatting outside.
With risk, I am trying to measure this with mental health. My friend is one year out from cancer recovery and being very cautious, but her daughter has developed anxiety because of all this- understandable this is a very anxiety inducing situation. They have seen no one but the babysitter and the babysitter came down with Covid.
I am trying to balance that caution of Covid with not creating mental health issues in my children. So I am taking on a little more risk because of this because I can see us shut down again. I don't know the right answer in all of this, but I am trying to protect their mental health (and physical health) and mine as well through this all.
Our mask mandate has expanded. DD will need to start where a mask while doing gymnastics starting on Monday (no more practice this week). Our coach made the comment that she loves how flexible all of the girls and parents are with the ever changing rules. I ordered her some gator styled masks on our coaches recommendation. Her plan is for them to lower the mask while tumbling/vaulting/bars and then replace as soon as they finish the skill. Her goal is to keep them safe from COVID but also safe from hurting themselves. She has phone calls into both the health authority and USA gymnastics too.
The gym is also hosting a drive through BBQ 8/7. Pre-orders opened yesterday and by office hour closing we had already sold 80 meals in the 1st day. We are in some desperate need of new equipment but have a budget shortfall due to COVID cancelling our meet.
Work is finally slowing down. Thank God. But less activity seems to make DD more bored, who knows. 6 more weeks of summer...

I was making nachos in the microwave for lunch and heard a gurgle, sizzle and saw tons of smoke coming from the cabinet under the sink. I pulled the trash can out and the outlet was black and smoking so I grabbed the fire extinguisher and yelled for Dh to come. Thankfully it didn’t start a real fire but it did melt the outlet and still stinks several hours later. There was nothing plugged into that outlet (the disposal is in the one next to it). Dh thinks it was just a faulty outlet and google agrees as the kitchen was redone in 2015 with permits and top brand everything. So, we have averted 2 fires in two months. Let’s see what August brings said no one ever.

Oh my goodness! Glad you were home and that everything is ok.
waverly I’m also doing the balancing game between social distancing and mental health. It’s one of the main reasons why DD1 is going full time to summer camp. She was such a mess from March until June.
We are about to meet a friend at the park for a play date for DS. He’s starting to show some anxiety and really misses his friends. One friend in particular who unfortunately doesn’t live anywhere near us. So I’m hoping another friend his age will at least give him SOMETHING.
And I called to get an appointment with a counselor today. I’m waiting for a call back. I’m anxious, not sleeping, and just overall an absolute mess.
mommyatty - I’ve been feeling very much the same way. I can’t turn my mind off, can’t sleep, worried about a million little things (but likely worried about 2-3 big things.
CBD has made a big difference for me. I’m still not sleeping great, but I’m able to turn off my brain and settle down a bit.
Yet again this week I've been reminded of what a cluster our healthcare system is here. This is the saga of getting a covid test in an area where testing is readily available and I am a very privileged individual with good health insurance and flexibility at my job. Got my test at the place the state recommended on their website, covered by insurance because a doctor "saw me" via a five minute telemed call first. Told I have to wait what look's like up to 10 days to get my results. In the meantime, I find out about a clinic offering the same day rapid test results. Schedule an appointment on their website, but they have no information about how to get it covered by insurance, how to get a doctor's order, or how much the test would cost out of pocket. Try to call and "due to high call volume" they direct me to the website instead. Finally ask HR about it at work because I knew she had helped others navigate testing. Can't get insurance to pay for the rapid test unless I have a doctor's visit first to confirm I have symptoms. Call my PCP. Nurse gives me a hard time about whether or not I really need it, I explain that I need to figure out my quarantine situation because of child custody arrangements that have to be made. (Which is true and why I'm trying to get my results faster. I need to figure out how long ExH needs to keep the kids and what this whole thing entails. He's pissed already that it could take up to 5 days to get results before we can even make a plan, nevermind 10 days.) List off everything I've got for symptoms. She finally makes me a telemed appointment. Now that doctor (not my PCP because she's not available) has to approve it and call it in too.
The whole thing has me so angry and upset about all of this. Testing, results, the hoops you have to jump through for health insurance to pay for a test during a PANDEMIC, the lack of clear information. And I'm in a BEST CASE scenario here with what I have access to. What about people who can't work from home, or have hourly jobs, or no back up care for kids. The list goes on. I'm just sitting here fuming and on the verge of angry tears over all of it.
I am about ready to throw in the towel. My boss calls because I haven't signed some papers for one of my staff retiring. Well I wasn't told I needed to sign these papers. I have only had 1 other staff retire 5 years ago. She starts going on about checking in, which would be driving to the office and back and about 2 hours out of the day. I tell her fine, if I can find time in the week that I am not chained to my kitchen table because I am bombarded by emails and calls ALL WAKING HOURS. Plus I have checked in at the chicken plant, the contact tracing office, the plant with 15 cases that I had to talk to all employees in the parking lot.....
She is ridiculous. She does not help us at all. I am on call basically 24 7. She starts talking how I don't have to take calls. Well, when I have been trying to get a hold of someone all day and they call back at 6:30, I have to take it. When I have a plant call during dinner, because they think they have someone exposed, I have to take it. When I have staff on official call on the weekend, including her staff, who send a million emails with questions on every case, I have to take it. She has no idea. Basically all she does is put together a daily press release. I have had it. I am not even trying to be civil at this point. If they don't think I am doing my job, they can take it and find someone else. Considering I have done all this plus 5 grants (1 with a day notice), 4 grant reports, my regular job during all this, I am pretty sure her boss and all other staff wouldn't be really thrilled with me backing out. She definitely can't pick up any slack.
twinmomma, I wish they would just say, cash price is going to be $50 at that way you can make the decision to go through insurance or not. So fustrating.
rere, Hmm I don't have advice, but i'd be livid too. So sorry your boss has no concept of what is going on.
xctsclrx, Exactly. Is it $50 or $500 to get this done out of pocket? Then I can just make the call without the added stress of a surprise bill coming in the mail.
mommyatty, I found out because beau's ex wife had seen someone post something on Facebook about it. It doesn't specify anywhere on the state website about what kind of test each place does.

The only rapid results tests I see here are antibody tests, which are wrong literally more than they’re right. Are you sure you aren’t seeing an antibody test?

Part of the grant I wrote was for rapid tests. Problem being, we were only planning on using them for specific populations such as the homeless or nursing homes because the kits are super expensive compared to the test now that take days to come back.

They offer both. This is called a "Rapid Molecular RNA" test. Same day or next day at the latest, depending on time of appointment.
I was able to get the rapid test today and it was negative! But, I was told to quarantine for 14 days, regardless, due to my symptoms. So, ExH will keep the kids and beau stays at his apartment until that two weeks is up so that I can be at the house alone. It's going to be a long two weeks of total isolation.

There are 3 tests you can get houston - Antigen, Antibody and the normal long one.
A place called Signature ER does it in Houston and I think they have a location in the Metroplex but our Dallas area team members don't normally go there so I'm guessing its not all over the place.
But because of the high chance of a false negative in ALL of the tests, our industry "standard" (if you can call it that" is to take the approach that someone who has symptoms must quarantine regardless.
Symptoms quarantine is for minimum of 10 days but also 24 hours fever free without medication and improvement in symptoms (changed about 6 days ago from 72 hours). If its because of exposure rather than symptoms, its 14 days. In other words, many in our industry no longer accept tests for expedited return to work. But people still do it for their own knowledge.
