DD’s birthday is coming up in mid-August. She’ll be 8. She finds the car parades depressing (so do I, tbh), but I’d still like to do something fun for her and a few friends on the day. We’ve done 1:1 play dates outside but no groups yet. Outdoor gatherings with large numbers are allowed here and our state is in decent shape, but I don’t see myself feeling comfortable having a pre-pandemic style party.
What have you seen lately in kids birthday parties that works well? I’m open to virtual or in-person activities, the latter only with defined physical spacing.
Our friends had Kona Ice come to their house. They set up a tent in the front yard for a few hours and folks got out of the car one family at a time to get their shaved ice and visit for a bit.
I enjoyed it more than the zoom parties we’ve done.
We invited neighborhood friends to walk or drive to our yard and spray DD with silly string. I put cans of it at everyone’s door the night before ($1 from Dollar Tree). The invitation was drop in over the course of an hour. Luckily everyone staggered themselves out well.
We attended another friend’s birthday where they did the same but with water balloons.
Our friend asked everyone to drop off signs in advance of her son's birthday. She and her husband covered the yard in them overnight so he woke up to a whole yard full.
We didn't do an official parade for the girls. Just gave folks an hour window to drive by. They loved it because folks could stop and chat for a minute from their cars since they all came at different times.
We got art kits from an art studio near us. They were little ceramic things and paint. Then we dropped the art kit and a cupcake at everyone’s door and got on Zoom to paint and sing Happy Birthday. Both kids loved it for their respective birthdays (8 yo girl and 6 yo boy).

I like this better. I did a parade for the neighbors and the leader started 2 minutes early. The whole thing last 4 minutes. If we had an hour to stop by and chat from the car that would be better. I was last in the car line even though I was 5 minutes early. It was odd. The other one we did was a retirement party and we were much more relaxed.
We attended a virtual nailed it party. Bake something and then posted it with a saying happy birthday to the Facebook party page. It worked out pretty good and we got to eat something yummy we made.
Not a fan of zoom parties. DD's friend dropped off a cupcake, plate, and hat, along with a bag of party favor junk. Then they did an hour zoom call and did some games and sang happy birthday. This wasn't fun.
We have a parade style party to attend in a couple week. The family lives on a busy road so they are setting up at the local school and you can stop buy during an hour time frame to wave and chat in the school bus lane. Its a Donuts party
DD's b-day back in June we just went low key. She had just started practices so DD got sang at practice and took in ice cream which made her happy.

For my son’s birthday in June we went to the beach, just our family. For my daughter’s birthday in July I rented a water slide for the back yard, which was used by the family only.
