Well today is DS'S last well child check up at the pediatrician. When they are babies and toddlers, and you are there what seems like weekly, you just assume this will be your life forever. But now we are going for the last time. I have the feels.
I've been bouncing back and forth between absolutely terrified to send them to school like I am sending them off the war or something, and maybe it'll be OK, we'll just tip toe through and they can see their friends. 2 more weeks until school starts. I wish it just started like tomorrow or something. I can't handle the build-up.
I feel so much more relaxed since we made the decision to keep the kids home. Granted, we are lucky we can do so since DH is a SAHD. And I’m glad our school is being supportive, after first being utter dicks about the idea that anyone would be cautious around a virus that’s killed 25,000 in the past month alone. I think after spending the summer figuring out the bare minimum they have to do to make us Nervous Nellies not whack them with a bat, they are finally hunkering down and getting serious about protecting the kids who are going back In person and educating those who aren’t.

My parents are camping 10 minutes from my house so I dropped DS off for the afternoon to play and I'll pick him up after work. It's nice having the house quiet while I work!
We’re on vacation with two friend families and it has been so great so far, despite it not being particularly relaxing since our group is 6 adults and 8 kids under 8. DH and I had been arguing more recently and I think we really needed a change of scenery and some interaction with other people.

Me too. And also for me as a teacher. I sometimes think everything will be fine and I’m overreacting and sometimes I think this is a terrible idea and we should all stay home. I need something to happen
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
erbear, We got some announcements that made me feel slightly better. We have online meets and greets with both the specials teachers and their regular teachers next week. I'm glad I can listen to the special teachers since usually we can't.
Supplies are supposed to be labelled and brought in a little at a time during the first week or 2.
I put a call into the pedi who said he would not send his kids to school (cue panic). I am a rule follower and don't want to violate doctor's advice. It was generalized, but since my kids have more health issues than a perfectly normal kid... I think I have a voicemail from DS's cardiologist, so I am curious to hear what she has to say.
In terms of my back-up plan of taking extended FMLA leave under FFCRA, I would not be eligible if I voluntarily chose online learning. Only if they school went all online or hybrid. So that is another reason to send them. Quarantines would be covered.

Interesting. All of my doctor friends, including my kids’ pedi and my sister, said they would and are sending their own kids, assuming their schools are open. My teacher friends are much more worried, largely bc we know what schools look like in non-pandemic times. It feels like any decision is wrong.

He has grown kids. I wonder if they had school age kids if their answer would be different since he doesn't actually have to worry about childcare in real life.
Also if they are both doctors they could afford a nanny. I mean we could too, if we wanted to get really tight, but we hadn't budgeted for months and months at a nanny rate. We had only budgeted for aftercare, and since they were getting older the thought was we would drop down to part time aftercare as well.
I'm having all the feels today. Our district is presenting their plan to the school board tonight. I'm 99% sure they will vote that we go back full time in person. Our Gov put in a mask mandate and this is the second day the girls had to go to summer camp with masks. DD1 didn't want to go back and doesn't want to go to school if it means wearing a mask all day. I'm sure it's brutal for her running around in the gym all day with a mask on. DD2 is doing better with the mask but asked me when the virus will be over on the way to camp. I hate that there is nothing I can do to help make it better for them.
We are online until Halloween at the earliest, whole district no exceptions, and there has been no communication as to what things will look like. Synchronous? Asynchronous? Who knows? How much time per day? How do we get a device from the district for the new 5ker? No communication at all, expect to say that we will hear something after August 20th....which is like 2 weeks before we start. We are having trouble finding a nanny (because everyone is trying to find a nanny), and don't know if we can sign up for the childcare programs (our swim place is offering mornings or afternoons, which both kids could go to). Because no one has any information. I feel like someone must have some idea of the general idea of what things will look like, but no one is sharing it.
waverly- half the kids in DD’s class who chose at home learning are children of physicians. All the pediatrician friends we have are staying at home. BUT, we are in Texas. If we were elsewhere, they’ve said their answer might be different. It’s all about the numbers and trends.
Cardiology called back and said DS has the same risk as the general pediatric population. He is not higher risk.
Cases are going up here. Rather than knocking us back to phase 3, they are trying a more scalpel approach and going after bars and things like that. Some growth in our county, but people are using masks here generally. A lot of growth in rural down state area.
mommyatty - it’s funny, around here, physician parents are among some of the most irresponsible people I know when it comes to COVID. When things shut down here, one family with 2 doctors kept their kids away from other kids for a day. A DAY. And they are screaming for the kids to go back. And they’re still working in hospitals. Not in COVID units, but one is an OB and one is an ortho, so definite exposure risks.
So because I know they’re not being careful, and many others aren’t, I’m basically paralyzed about what yo do for school.
On another note, DH and I are going to see a beach house tomorrow. It’s honestly perfect - exactly where we want to be, steps from the coast but sheltered from storms. The house itself is junky, but the land is amazing. We will rent it out in the on-season for the foreseeable future, and use it in the shoulder and off seasons as we can. That’s assuming we get it. There will be a bidding war for this. Property is disappearing quickly there. Fingers crossed.
mellym - my kids hate masks. HATE. They went to camp this week and moaned and groaned. But I got them new masks and now DD1 (ADHD and a lot of sensory stuff) told me today that she “can live this mask life”. And DD2 forgot she still had it on for most of the ride home.

DD2 has told me the Target ones are her favorite, comfiest ones too. I tend to agree. Those are the ones I wear a lot more often than my homemade ones.
We tried the Target masks and they're too big for their faces. I got some from Old Navy last night so we will see if they're any better fitting. Does anybody have a good toddler mask? We need to get DD3 one for when we fly.
Also, Switch update. DH did Wal Mart pick up for every day this week (the same location that he sent me to) because online it kept saying they had inventory. Most of the orders were canceled because they couldn't be fulfilled but one of them actually went through and he got one! There was an hour window where he also purchased one online from Wal Mart and Best Buy to ship to our house. We theoretically will have three of them now. He found two of our friends that are going to buy them from us.
mellym - the jaanuu (or whatever it is) masks are small. My friend gave me a couple and they’re great for DD2’s little face, but way too small for DD1. Similarly, DD2 can’t wear the target masks - way too big.
Would a Wii be good for being active in the wintertime? We are pretty against video games, but I’m thinking all the wii ones where you are actually doing it.
Pretty much everything will be cancelled. We might be able to enroll in ski lessons, and I think that would be it for winter. (No basketball, no festivals, no parties, no events).
waverly, We have an older Wii, so not sure if it is the same, but the kids played Just Dance A LOT. DD's PE teacher even used it in class a few times. That is very active. Boxing and I think tennis were hits.

Just dance is a big hit here with our 7 year old. She also likes the wii sports (boxing)
