I hate nextdoor with a fiery passion. Usually something is so impossibly crazy that I delete the app and am done with it... and then I start cleaning and want to get rid of stuff, so I download it again and get sucked back in.
Even my own mother thinks the people on nextdoor are bat shit.. and coming from my mom, that’s impressive.
I agree re: Nextdoor. It’s typically either “some dog has been pooping on my lawn” or “some kid played ding dong ditch, help me tell their parents”.
School is all over the local Facebook boards and Nextdoor, and everyone is insane. You’re a terrible parent if you’re sending your kids because masks! Bad air! Buses! You’re a terrible parent if you’re choosing remote because socialization! Screens! Isolation!!
And believe it or not, people can’t seem to see the other side of the argument!
sdlaura,I got into an argument on facebook with my cousin last night. I have SO MUCH REGRET.
Not with anything I said, but with engaging. I still get mad when I think about it.
But when a modern woman says what's so wrong with the idea of household voting anyway....gah.
I shouldn't be friends with anyone I know on facebook. I shouldn't even be on facebook.
Ugh. Yes. I don’t engage with my cousins. There’s a block of them And they’re all extra but think they are gods gift to mankind. They homeschool and marched to open up the state early on and think masks encroach in their freedom. They all get continuously snoozed. I deleted fb but then all the school info was on fb so I had to redownload it.
Most renditions of school sucks this year. But those people angrily and irrationally complaining on Next Door about it don’t help the situation at all.
sdlaura I have determined that most of the people shouting “listen to the science!” the loudest also don’t.. listen to the science.
Or they listen to the science that suits their agenda only. I’m probably guilty of that myself.
But seriously.. you should know better than to engage on Nextdoor. I’ve always thought you were smart, but now.. 😏
Who knew pandemics would become so political? I guess only if you lived through a major one before (no one alive now).
I’m sure NextDoor does not have major science researchers ranting about schools. Even if one was a great researcher on Covid, barring a baseline of information, the science is all very preliminary and rushed for obvious reasons.
Around here I haven’t seen anyone posting that people are harming their kids by not sending them to school. It seems to jump straight from ‘COVID is a hoax and your mask is going to suffocate you’ to ‘if you think anything should open, you want everyone to die of COVID.’
I definitely don’t fit into social media as someone who thinks COVID is real and scary, people should wear masks and avoid being indoors with strangers/groups, but it might be possible to open elementary schools safely in low infection areas - or at least let’s evaluate whether it’s worth taking some risk to do so. But those moderate people are probably smart enough to stay off of social media

sdlaura- I’m with you. In fact, we planned to send our kids back until cases exploded here. We do not meet any benchmark for reopening. Not a single one, though we are getting close on days with declining cases and hospitalizations. But our positive rate is still 13%. When we hit the benchmarks, I will absolutely send my kids.
I’m hoping like hell by October our numbers are good. But with the number of assholes out there, I’m not hopeful.
I really, really wanted to post something that would go against all of the conspiracy, rabid relatives and "friends' I have seen on Facebook last night. It was really good. But I have decided to live the change and not engage on social media, so I posted a meme of my mentor, Ouiser, instead.

We met benchmarks and they still decided to go online. The quarantines planned are impossible to staff. But does this mean we are out for the entirety of the pandemic? Because it kind of sounds like yes. We are at 6-7%. It would be nice if they could come up with a hybrid plan for maybe 3-4%, so we can move through phases. Then 100% in person could be 1-2% or something like that?
You know what would help? Actual federal leadership. If CDC was allowed to write a plan that laid those benchmarks out, with the science behind it, that would help. But they aren’t allowed to because they were forced to write bullshit guidance that said “screw science. Put kids back in school, no matter what.” Their draft guidance had actual benchmarks and suggestions, and if you could meet them, you were good to go. If you couldn’t, then you needed a plan b or to be virtual until you could meet them.
It’s insane that we as individuals are having to parse the science to make decisions on this. I’m not a scientist. But there are people who have spent literally their entire careers studying pandemics. They know what stops viral spread. Those people were in charge in places like Denmark and New Zealand that effectively stopped the virus. Unlike here where dumbasses who think prayer and essential oils will save them are in charge.

If I could move to New Zealand I totally would. Every state is on their own here. It was terrible when they were all competing for PPS and ventilators. Now our state has pushed it to the school districts so every school district is on their own (with almost crippling guidance). This is how I felt with my work’s re-opening plan. I just made it up on my own because guidance had not yet been released by the state. I amended it when guidance was issued. Our county health department is strictly doing contact tracing and doesn’t have time to do anything else.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a new car this weekend.
School came out with a game plan. DD will be synchronized either every morning or afternoon with live instruction. 8:45-11:45 or 12:15-2:45 on zoom. I asked if we could request cohort time and was told NO. We have 3 other friends who go to different school same district two parents got the same NO the 3rd got of course we will take request we want to work with families to make this as easiest as possible. I wish we went to that school. I asked for AM as it would make my life 1000 times easier. Last spring out of the 40 kids in her class only 8 showed up for the 9am zoom. The 2pm and 7pm zooms were way more popular. Ugh
Good news are that cases are falling. The universities announced remote learning for most classes but are allowing university housing. We will see how that affects # in 3 weeks. If all goes well #s will be low enough to allow K-3 to go back in hybrid format by mid October. Chatter among teachers has it that 4-12 won't go back at all for the entire school year.
In today's edition of "what can go wrong with my house," last night, the kitchen faucet fell apart and started spraying everywhere. I managed to fix it enough to be workable, but it definitely needs to be replaced.
And while the kids were brushing their teeth this morning, I heard a loud thunk and DD shout that DS broke the bathroom sink.. Nothing major, but the pop up stopper now needs to be replaced. Except the faucet and stopper are some stupid shade of metal that doesn't exist in normal stores (I asked our designer about it when she was doing our bathroom, and she wasn't even sure), so unless we're okay with the stopper being a different metal than the ring around it and the faucet, it all needs to be replaced.

I have had this same conversation in my head a dozen times with one friend. She's a science teacher, all about listening to the scientists...until the scientists started recommending a gradual return to school. Now I'm selfish and morally corrupt for...listening to the scientists. It's exhausting.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Okay, it's laughable at this point. City inspector came out for our final A/C inspection, which.. we passed. But he pointed out that our master bath exhaust fan vents to the attic and not the outside.. so... one more thing on the list.

WHAT? Why?? Why does it vent to your attic? How weird is that?
mustardseed2007, because everything could possibly go wrong on our bathroom renovation did. And apparently this was somehow overlooked? I don't know. At this point, I'm just pretty sure my house hates me.
So our governor just completely scrapped the county watch list system the state has been using and instituted a completely new framework based only on number of new cases in the past 7 days and positivity rate. Our county still meets the threshold to reopen schools in person under strict distancing/health guidelines, but not with as much wiggle room as before.
On the one hand, I don’t like that it’s stricter because it will potentially mean more back and forth between tiers/open and closed schools. But on the other hand it’s safer from a public health perspective that it’s stricter, so that’s good. Or course I still expect that the people who want schools to stay closed won’t be satisfied even by stricter guidelines.
My hairdresser is happy that she’s allowed to reopen her salon - she already texted everyone. I don’t think any outbreaks have been linked to salons here, so she was understandably angry about still being closed.
About 3 weeks ago, the school committee proposed that preK-3 would go back for 2 half days per week, and 4-12 would be 100% remote. Riots ensued. Parents were pissed. Our governor is saying there’s no reason most districts can’t go back at least hybrid. But our schools are old and the HVAC systems aren’t safe. So can’t have all the kids back.
So the school committee slapped together a ridiculous hybrid plan for all, using all of the unsafe spaces. The women on the committee voted for the original plan, men for the stupid plan, and the mayor declared that all would go hybrid.
So now the teachers union is blocking the hybrid option, refusing to re-enter the buildings and they’re threatening to strike.
So now teachers are horrible, unions are horrible, the mayor is horrible, the school committee is horrible, parents wanting hybrid are horrible, parents wanting remote are horrible, hundreds of comments on one post about how horrible everyone and everything in our town has become.

Omg my county is at 1-2 percent and we are still online. The entire county came together to make this decision. I think we might be the only ones though.
Just for the record I want my kid back in school. We are struggling right now. I am not equipped to teach my kid. I'm beyond fustrated. I am sure he is too
Our superintendent just sent a video with a bunch of info about our planned hybrid return starting 9/21. I definitely don’t envy the people trying to figure this all out!
They said they wouldn’t consider schedule requests other than putting siblings together, but the two other pod moms and I sent a polite email to the principal just to say how well our first grade boys have done learning together and told him we’d be forever grateful if they could be on the same schedule, and he sent a nice response that they’d try to accommodate. Fingers crossed. We find out who’s Mon/Wed and who’s Tues/Thurs on 9/4.

Doesn’t make you feel better, but this is quite a common shortcut that builders put in, so they don’t have to spend more money I guess to properly vent it.
There are definitely places with low transmission that are still online. Some are opening and might be OK. My nephews have been in person (masked) for 1.5 weeks. So far no cases. A far cry from let’s say Georgia where they have crazy cases, quarantined and no masks. I’ve decided their school in MI is going to be my case study.
Ours just sent an e-mail saying our county is on the warning list now. I thought they were going to say we are going back and I was like but I just hired my nanny until Dec, but alas no it was just to say there is no current hope of in-person. And IEP students going in would be only the most severe cases. They didn’t word it that way but that was my interpretation. Students that need constant 1 on 1.
On the good news front, dd found out that 2 of her friends will be in the A group when we do go back on the AB hybrid schedule. One is her best friend that we will trade up rides with so that is great news for me. I do not want her on a bus;Dh does not see this as an issue.
School is opening the week after labor day for a week of hybrid and then full time after that for K-5!!! Little concerned about the after labor day because I can't imagine not having a spike, but I am happy he gets to go.
Also getting flu shots for the kids before hand just so we have one less thing to worry about
This reminds me that my work is doing flu shots in the parking lot next week and I can bring DH and my two older kids - I need to sign up for that. I think babies aren’t supposed to get one until six months, so that would be November, but I’ll ask the pediatrician at baby’s 4-month appointment in a couple weeks. That just leaves making arrangements for the 3-year-old.
