sandandsea... the teacher who has never physically met him or observed his behavior in a classroom setting, observed his work, etc and has only seen minimal work from him, over a computer, for two weeks?
DDOT: Our dishwasher broke. DH is going to try to fix it (good luck! He's the least handy person I know), but my guess is, like everything in the house, it's donezo.
2020 has been the year of expensive appliances shitting out on us. New washer/dryer, new HVAC, and now this.

She met with his teacher last year too as they are friends and their classrooms are next to each other. He’s “approaching grade level” not behind. So she’s scheduling extra meetings with him to see his writing and talk about it so at least he’s on the radar?
I also ordered a bunch of books from the library to hopefully pique his interest.
sandandsea, I have a Bosch bookmarked that we'll replace it with if we need to. I wouldn't be upset if it needs to be replaced just annoyed to see more of my bonus funneled into non-fun house projects.
k3am I’m secretly praying our dishwasher breaks so I can replace it. It’s a thermador and supposed to be good, but it’s not good.
DHs cousin has one that is amazing. I think it’s a Bosch.
I have a Bosch. It was amazing. Until it broke in March. I've had no dishwasher for the entire freaking pandemic. I finally got someone to come look at it last week and he basically laughed and said "Ya, even if I can get the part to fix it, it'll be so expensive to repair that you should just get a new one. Get a different brand that's easier to get parts for and fix."
The added bonus is that I have the half size, tiny style dishwasher so no matter what I get it's going to cost a small fortune and require a special order.
Day 2 of virtual learning and we already have tears. She doesn't understand the geometry homework. This is not a good sign that she is already confused after only 20 minutes of teaching this morning.

I don't think it's brand specific. GE and Kitchenaid have both told me the same thing. Dishwashers are not designed to be repaired. By the time they break, it will almost always make more sense to replace.
Dh is super handy (too handy since he is always doing projects and stressing himself out which then stresses us out). He was able to fix the Bosch multiple times and get parts. We decided if it was over $250 we would replace, but he was able to fix it for $150. Now, if you add in labor I can understand why they say just get a new one. I think the Bosch we have is between $600-$800.
Also, whoever designed our kitchen did such a fabulous job that the only way one drawer opens is if the dishwasher is open because the handle blocks it. At least with a new dishwasher we can solve that problem?
I told DH to just buy something. I have zero desire to handwash dishes for the forseeable future.

Just got another update and she is concerned about handwriting. So she met with the OT and sent some links I need to work through. I’m glad I put him on the radar at least. Step 1- check.
k3am, waverly, The repair guy said it's because he'd have to pull out the whole thing and bring it back to his shop. It's one of the super quiet ones, which I guess means all the parts are encased in a plastic shell that's a pain to get apart while it's in my kitchen. So the labor would be insane to pay for.
I had some old friends over yesterday for some outdoor drinks, food, and swimming for the kids. I always have fun with them, but I don’t get to see them often. They have no idea what has been happening with our family over the past year - DD1’s diagnosis, the nightmare at school with CPS and the other family, DD1’s behavior and the toll it has taken on me.
I was met with, “Oh. Um. Look at the time. We should go.”
I have known these women for at least 30 years. One of them I’ve known for 40. Their reactions were somewhat understandable, but reaffirm that I’m pretty alone in this. It was a bummer if a realization.
mae0111, it's a bummer when you expect someone to be there for you and they are not. I get it's hard to understand specific situations unless you have gone through it which is why support groups on that specific topic have been helpful for me. But it stings.
My former best friend has always been about herself, but when one is going through a true hardship and the response is anyway back to me, it's just not worth it. Where is the basic empathy?
Thank you all. I get it, sort of. No one can know what it’s like if they haven’t experienced it. I’m not really sure what I expected. Just... something? I really didn’t give much info. Just that DD1 is difficult to manage, and that home is chaotic a lot of the time. That we’ve been dealing with tantrums and meltdowns daily for several years, and that I’m worn out. I’d planned to share more but didn’t really have the chance.
I guess I’m in the minority with successful dishwasher repairs. We have had a repair guy fix ours (either GE or Maytag, I think?) twice in the past 6+ years, and it was successful.
Reading about the dishwasher is making me remember when ours wasn’t working great. DH is very handy, fixes everything, installs all kinds of electrical stuff, builds things, etc. So he fixed the dishwasher. Yay.
I ran it that night. Went to unload it the next day and every bit of plastic had melted. I mean, contigo water bottles, OXO peelers and knife handles... EVERYTHING. Whatever he did sent the heating element into overdrive.
We still laugh about it. I mean, we wouldn’t be laughing if the house burned down, which was a real possibility I guess? But honestly, he was prancing like a peacock about fixing it... yup, you fixed it all right... 😂

I have an appointment scheduled with a new divorce attorney since mine goes MIA for weeks at a time and has missed deadlines that she set for herself. My divorce is still dragging on.
I found out today that I had an IA investigation opened on me for the first time in my 18 years with the government. The case has been closed and I didn't do anything wrong, but it still feels weird.
So I made the mistake of wading into a nextdoor conversation about schools reopening...of course against my better judgment 😬
I was having trouble figuring out why so many people are pissed about schools making plans to reopen (we are now off the state watch list and so now we can have schools open on a hybrid schedule, with masks and distancing). People are like ‘wait, if we send our kids to school then we can’t see the grandparents and have to distance from others!’ To which I said ‘ok, then you should choose to stay virtual. Many people will forgo other interactions so their kids can go to school in person, and don’t have local grandparents anyway.’ People didn’t like that line of thinking.
But then it occurred to me that they’re angry because they selected in person school, rather than virtual, and didn’t expect us to be allowed to go back in person so quickly. But I go back to - ok, then switch to virtual...but then I was told I cared only about myself. Ok...🤔
People here say they want to listen to the scientists...but then when the scientists/county and local health authorities say we have met all the previously laid out benchmarks for case counts and hospital/ICU utilization - they don’t like that either.
