Pretty much all sports that I know of are back to some sort of practice/schedule. At least kids sports, HS sports are a whole other world.
DD1 - Swim team and XC. Swim team started back in June and they are following strict USA swimming guidelines. Less kids per lane, no locker rooms, masks when not in the water, coaches in face shields or masks. XC is brand new for us. She joined the 7th grade team. So far, I imagine it doesn't look much different than it used to, except they spread out more when doing stretches/strength training.
DD2 - Gymnastics. We are finally on the road back to where she was when she broke her arm almost a year ago at practice. Found a new gym we love and they seem to be doing the socially distancing thing well. The parents however never seem to wear masks, but at least we can stay and watch. I don't get to watch swim and that hurts! I love to watch!
DD3 - Started soccer two weeks ago. She is just 4, so its all really cute and fun. Outdoors makes it pretty easy to spread out. But as soon as they get going at a game those kids all just form one giant cluster around the ball.
DS (4) just started soccer.. he's had one practice so far and loved it. The kids are assigned squares and it's no contact. Parents are not allowed to be on the field.. so I spent most of the time in the parking lot chatting with a friend and squinting and about 10% certain that the kid I thought was mine was actually mine.
The rink is still not open for everyone. They are running hockey camps ($$$$) and have freestyle sessions available for older figure skaters, but DD is not eligible. I bought DD new skates right around her birthday in February.. she's grown 2 inches since then, so I'm highly doubtful she's going to fit into them once we're able to go back.

Both boys are doing social distanced soccer which means just practices, staying in your box, no scrimmages or games. Ds1 is hating it because he’s on the comp team and misses games and actually playing while ds2 is loving it because it’s his very first activity. Ds1 is also racing which is a social distanced sport anyway.
DD1 started boxing on Saturday. She loved it! Masks, byo wraps and gloves. It’s only once a week, so I’m trying to set up a basketball clinic. I found a guy to run it, now I just need a place.
DD2 is doing club soccer. Masks at all times. I just got her preliminary schedule. Her games are Sundays at 8am, 45 minutes away. I want to cry. It was supposed to be 2 practices a week, and two games every other weekend. Now it’s 3 practices a week and one game every week. But she really loves it. I’m waiting to see if the town league starts up.
It’s fascinating to me that soccer is still on. It starts Sept 14. It’s run by our city but our school district is 100% distance learning. The twins are old enough to start this fall so hopefully it’ll all work out. DD1 is also signed up to play.
Fencing has no parents or spectators inside the club. Fencers wear a mask (obv) but they have an additional mask that now attaches inside that covers the bottom section. I don’t even know what it looks like but he only needed to buy two, one for his practice mask and one for his electric. Also we preregistration so numbers are low. A regular mask must be worn going inside the club too.
Baseball-masks must be worn unless they are in the outfield. Parents must remain distanced and wear masks. We haven’t played games yet and they are undecided on them at this point.
Field hockey-masks are worn unless in play. Coaches wear masks at all times. They are sometimes lax on the mask situation though I have observed bc sometimes at practice the girls will be close to each other in line for drills without masks. Parents are told to distance and encouraged to walk laps or run errands during practice. They’ve been adamant that no parents should congregate. Travel is restricted and we are only playing locally when and if games begin.
My oldest, 11, is continuing with swim team. They are following US Swim guidelines. Practices are much shorter to allow each group time to practice. Normally groups overlap but are not this year to help with contact tracing. Cross country was cancelled this year for kids under competition age (7th grade).
My youngest, 5, will be in stroke school (pre swim team). She wants to do soccer, but I am trying to keep our exposure down. Plus, last year, she started throwing a fit before every game/practice after the second week. If she really loved it, I would consider it. By sticking with swim, we are exposed to a lot of the same families as my older daughter.
DD is still in gymnastics and making some good progress. Schedule is up in the air starting the 14th. We can only have 25 people in the gym at any time which is causing problems with school starting. We have 33 girls on team with 4 coaches so we can't all practice together. Plus they have been slowly adding rec classes back. I'm really hoping DD can stick with the same coaches and group of girls for fall schedule.
We did a drive through BBQ in early August and made $2000 and have another planned for the 11th.
DD1 is doing club soccer for the fall. This is the second week of practice - two nights a week. Parents aren't allowed on the fields and we need to complete a health form each time. They should decide on teams soon and then we'll get the game schedule. They don't have to wear masks while playing but everyone on the sidelines will need to wear them at games. They also said they're limiting spectators to two per player.
DD2 is doing swim lessons and the instructor wears a shield in the pool. Parents required to wear a mask while watching.
We are dropping out of girl scouts so I'm not sure what their plan is moving forward.
Things are open here, but we're skipping it all. Our gymnastics gym has terrible safety guidelines - no masks, lots of people in and out of the building, mixing of classes and age groups, etc. All of it just seems terrible. So as far as my kids know, it's still "closed because of the virus" and they haven't asked about it.
4H isn't a sport, but it's our other big activity. I haven't heard from the 4H leader since things closed in March. So I guess that's just done now? The fair is cancelled anyway, so there'd be no pay off for the projects. It's a small group of kids, all outside in a barn, so it could be relatively safe if they kept it running. But it was also a bunch of families that I would imagine are anti-maskers given their other beliefs, so I'm kind of glad to not be mingling with them leading up to election season.
twinmomma , I haven't found 4H here- I might be in a slightly too urban area. But we had small groups that they could definitely have done outside or inside with masks. I remember doing horses, wood burning, and painting a shirt. The fair was never the reason I did things, but we did show off our creations there. The fair officials definitely got snobby with us once about the fair. But anyway, my mom brought her wood burning stuff over for the winter, so that is going to be one of our winter crafts. I might guilt trip her into helping me with the kids anyway since the ratio would be better you know for kids holding things that could burn them (and if there are any kids that will burn themselves on a wood burner it would definitely be mine).
DS1 is the only one doing sports here because that boy needs an outlet for his energy. He is doing community soccer. Parents aren't allowed to watch practice and only 2 guests per player during games. Masks are to be worn by spectators at all times. If you can't wear a mask for personal or health reasons, you are not allowed to attend. I'm not quite clear if the kids wear them during practice, but I know the coaches do. A health form about Covid has to be filled out for each practice and game.
The state governor and county executives just relaxed the numbers for outdoor gatherings, but I don't know how or if it will impact us.
The first practice was supposed to happen last night, but was cancelled due to rain. Games start next Saturday. I'm hoping that people will comply so we can have a fun soccer season.
polecat8 I hope so for you too! I totally get having a kid that needs to burn off the energy. Sports (and putting in a pool this summer) make such a difference in my 8 year old. Girl needs to run it out!
