What do your kids want for Christmas? What do you want them to want for Christmas?
....This post brought to you by my MIL who is disappointed the kids haven’t put their lists together yet since she wants to finish shopping this weekend.
DD wants a dog. DS wants a baby brother. They are both going to be disappointed.
DS1 filled my Amazon cart with a ridiculous number of giant nerf guns and a tactical vest. I already got him a new spikey bike/skateboard helmet.
I already bought them a Nintendo switch when I found one locally, so I need to get some accessories/games for that.
DD wants a fitness tracker.
DS2 and DS3 are hard to buy for since we have so many toys already, but I have to get them some stuff because Santa.
We’ll get matching PJs for everyone.
My sister wants to get us a climbing outdoor thing but we have zero yard space between pool, trampoline, and swing set. And no basement or flexible indoor space. So we’ll see.
We got the kids Switches already. DD2 had been saving up for one for months, so she can use her $$ to buy games. I bought them early in case they sold out. Got a couple of games on Prime Day and on Overstock - good deals there!
My dad always wants ideas for ridiculous gifts, so I’m recommending that he get DD1 a heavy bag for boxing and DD2 a Dribble Up soccer ball. She is very excited about that.
So far, the things they have listed out loud for Santa include a skateboard (easy, fine) and the entire computer set up needed to be a famous video game youtube star (not a chance). We'll see what they come up with when they actually work on letters. Usually we do that over Thanksgiving weekend.
Aside from whatever specific thing they ask for in their letters, I'm done shopping for them. I picked up a couple board games, kid versions of the diamond painting kits I do, and lights for their bike spokes for all three kids. For the girls, Harry Potter pillowcases in their house colors, new diaries, and little coding robots that I got on sale on Prime day. For beau's son I grabbed some Fortnite action figures, a sweatshirt that changes from a Chewbacca stuffy to a hoodie, and a nerf gun target set.
My brother and SIL are getting one of those box fan forts for all three to share. My sister is getting friendship bracelet stuff for the girls. Otherwise, we're all stumped on what to tell people to get them. We don't want more toys around the house and we're trying to declutter before we move, not add to the junk.
DS wants everything he sees on television. DD wants nothing. She says books. And she’s obsessed with all things Hamilton so we might get her something related to that.
I was going to get DD a mother-daughter journal for Christmas because that is right up her alley. We ended up getting it early so she could practice her cursive using it. We both really love it. It has writing prompts as well as free pages, and i think it’s a nice bonding exercise.
Ipad, phone and dog. Not in that order but I'm not sure what the order is.
And yes my MIL asked me also and I was like.....LADY
We said the same. And then she pointed out that one time we made fun of them for dropping by an entire Easter worth of stuff, including eggs already stuffed, full baskets, etc, ridiculously early in Feb.. and the world caught corona and we still had Easter. Soooooo..
DD, who is 6, wants all the lego build sets that have a suggested age of 16+
NO
I think the Lego age suggestions are ridiculous. DS1 (now 10) has been doing the architectural sets for years, and they are all 12+ or 16+. At 6, he probably needed assistance with some of the more complicated ones but I certainly wouldn’t rule them out based on lego’s suggested ages!
Both boys want new scooters so that will be their big gift. Along with lights as stocking stuffers.
They’ll both get some clothes/shoes.
They also both have an assortment of toys (pj mask/paw patrol/superhero) they’ve put on their amazon wish lists over the year that grandparents can get them. Basically whenever they see something they want we tell them to put it On the list. Ds1 wants robucks and Apple gift cards for video games, bakugon, and some legos.
We are doing subscription boxes. My MIL is getting DD (6) a year of bookroo so everything month new boxes arrive. We are getting her a craft subscription box.
Also clothes and accessories for her Our Generation doll. Everyone got different lists in effort to control the size and amount of play sets.
I don’t really know for my 14 year old. She will probably fill a few online carts with clothes and then I’ll buy some things from there. And maybe a duvet and cover.
My 11 year old is getting airpods and a bath tray for sure (already bought). Maybe a phone (there are reasons, but it would just be DHs old phone). She circled a bunch of things in the amazon and toy store catalogues also.
My almost 9 year old has a birthday in a couple of weeks. We are getting him a fly fishing rod for that. Not sure about Christmas yet, need to wait for the birthday first. He circled a bunch of things. We will see what we buy.
I feel like they don’t play with anything or do anything besides screens so what’s the point of getting them anything at this point? I’m not feeling all that warm and fuzzy about anything at the moment.

I've asked DS and he has no clue what he wants. I'm pretty much done shopping for him. I got him a Nintendo Switch and some accessories, a couple board games and a laser tag game to leave at my parents house to play with his cousins. Beau bought him a scooter and my parents said they'll get him a couple of Switch games and probably some clothes.
The toy catalogs came in the mail so the kids have been circling toys. They want all the stuffed animals.
We already got them a switch so we will get games for it, lego sets, Christmas jammies, OG Doll and stroller for DD3, books. We might get DD1 and DD2 ripstiks or give the idea to grandparents. Also giving arts and craft ideas to them.
My mom asked me 3 weeks ago. She has vetoed every item I've given her so far. I finally told her I have no more ideas. The ideas were Comfy sleeper socks like mine, fuzzy fleece sheets, this doll to go with a horse she got a while ago. My mom also wants a list for me and I have no clue.
So far I've got DD a puffy vest, books, toy horse figurines to add to her collection, a fancy practice leo, puzzles, and clothes. I'm buying a new house tablet as the big gift to everyone. I'm toying with getting a smaller tablet for DD to use as an e-reader.
Oh. And a fish. They’ve settled on fish since we basically vetoed everything else. Still on the fence as to if I’m okay with a fish.
If the kids keep up their behavior and cleaning, we buy our fish in like 11 days. I’m annoyed with the fish already. The tank is sitting there taunting me saying “you’re going to have to spend all your time cleaning me...”
We did buy a nice tank (DH is apparently a closet PETA member and didn’t like my idea of a beta in a small fish bowl) that is supposedly easy to clean. I’ll let you know how it goes.
sandandsea, a beta fish is super easy and are kind of fun. Ours as a kid survived the garbage disposal and would follow your finger on the bowl. His name was Mr. Bubbles and lived 4 years. We had a fancy vase he swam in after he learned how to jump out of the small bowl.
k3am,I really liked our old Bettas (they died after nice long multi-year lives) in their small bowls. They were easy to clean. We used to have a dwarf hamster, and that was potentially easier, also lived many years. Good luck with the fish and tank cleaning. I would delegate tank cleaning to him, because he wanted the big tank.
186momx, phdmomma, I'm laughing at the suicidal fish! I had one like that too, but it was one of those algae eaters that helped to keep the tank clean. It was a 10 gallon tank and he would jump out almost every day! We tried putting books over certain spots, but we didn't have a light in the tank so we needed to keep the lamp on and let the light in the top.
He finally jumped out overnight... RIP Algae Eater...

There is a great Hamilton book written by LMM with all the lyrics and notes to why he wrote specific lines. My kids love it.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Do you have a link to the Hamilton book? My DD would love this but my searching isn’t uncovering it. Thank you!
