My 7yo 2nd grader recently asked for chapter books.
He’s slightly behind his reading level currently (he’s supposed to be at J and he’s at H?), so I don’t want something too hard that will discourage him, but obviously want him reading as much as possible!
He likes Dog Man and Fly Guy. Any recommendations that would make a good Christmas gift?
The bad guys The notebook of doom Press start Dragon masters
Basically any of the Scholastic Branches books. They are shorter pages with pictures and larger font. Great first chapter books for that age.
I read a lot of them to my 3rd grader. He can read them himself, but loves being read to, so even if they are a bit above his ability now, you can read them to him or with him (alternating pages) or whatever.
Bad Guys Dragon Masters (we just started this series based on recs here and DD loves it, though she's a little older) Geronimo Stilton but sometimes the fun typography can be a bit tricky A to Z Mysteries Bailey School Kids
My 1st grader is blowing through all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. I get a new one from the library for her each week.
Of topic slightly... I got Diary of a Wimpy Kid for an angel tree kid present. Said kid is 11/in 5th grade. Will it be super below his reading level? It was recommended to me for school age kids by a librarian fwiw.
My son has been REALLY into this series of classics lately. This link is for Treasure Island. If you toggle through the suggested items you will see other classic selections.

My nephew is a freshman this year and still asks my sister to buy the new DoaWK books for him. 11 is still in the age range for them. Honestly, with the language/behavior portrayed I think they are more suited for kids 10+.

Intended audience for Wimpy Kid is grades 3-7. They're super popular with my 4th and 5th grade students at school (I'm an elementary school librarian) and even my 7th grader is still into them.
OP- Agreed with the recommendations for Scholastic's Branches series. Press Start is wildly popular, as are Eerie Elementary, Dragon Masters, Notebook of Doom and Binder of Doom. I can't keep The Bad Guys on my shelves, either. A-Z Mysteries and Magic Treehouse are series that some kids like to work their way through.
Graphic novels along the lines of Dog Man that I'd recommend are The InvestiGators, the Lunch Lady series, and HiLo. Pilkey has a new spinoff series coming out in a few weeks- CatKid Comic Club.

My ds is 11 and in 6th. He read the whole series several years ago, but he still picks them up and rereads them when he runs out of other books to read that he likes, so I think you're ok.

DS read Diary of a Wimpy Kid in 2nd grade and not sure if this is actually true but he blamed the book for one of his behavioral issues. It was kind of potty humor related. So anyway, I would hold off on those until the kid is older.
DS read all the Magic Tree House books at that age.
