We are hoping to at least be able to go see a different four walls this summer and were thinking of renting a house in southwest MI, which is about a 2.5 hour drive away for us. The idea would be to bring our bikes, do some biking, some hiking, and just relax in a home that isn't ours for a weekend.
I have been to MI twice before but once was in August and once in late June/early July. Right now, I'm looking at the first weekend in June. I know every year might be different, but are temps in southern MI typically warm enough to go biking and hiking at that time of year? This would mainly be an outdoor getaway, and of course it could always rain, but at least hoping for weather nice enough to do stuff outside. I'm even OK with the 60s, as that's perfect hiking weather to me. I guess if all else failed, at least we'd be in a different house for a couple days.
The first weekend in June should be good for Southern MI. Might be cooler near the big lakes, but generally the weather starts to get nicer end of May-beginning of June.
Yes! Bring sweatshirts and stuff. I'm almost positive that I'm not putting DS in shorts until mid June since we moved here but with hoodies and things that should be fine.
Yes, you should be good with hiking and such. Ditto others about bringing sweatshirts, especially for the evening. Lake Michigan will probably still be fairly chilly for swimming in early June. It’s a beautiful area, so it should be a fun trip! 😊
I'm not in MI but live prettttty close to the SW border. I think May and June around here are pretty great, honestly. As others said, you may need a sweater and it could be rainy but its also not cold anymore or ridiculously humid yet.
Michigan weather can be pretty unpredictable but generally speaking June is fairly nice. It might get chilly at night so I would definitely bring a sweater but it should be perfectly comfortable to hike/bike during the day.
I know I am in the minority here....possibly even the only one but I would take Michigan winters over Michigan summers any day.
Saying that, I would be super happy with just having fall and spring as seasons.
I strongly suggest you never move to the mid-Atlantic. I thought midwestern summers were gross but it is soooo much worse here. It's like the worst days of summer, but every day for all of July and August. At least in the midwest you usually get breaks in the weather.
OP I think you'll be fine in June. I doubt it will be that super hot humid yuck that happens later in the summer everywhere in the midwest. Unless it's a weird year it probably won't be cold. I've never lived in lower Michigan but I've visited plenty and have a lot of friends there, and I think they would say June is one of the best times to visit!
If you're only driving 2.5 hours I would assume the climate there is actually very similar to whatever you'd experience at home!
