In reading the news I’m horrified that someone would shoot her dog walker! I mean how bizarre. I hope the man recovers and the dogs are returned. I mean dog napping is just not something that was even on my radar as a real thing, it seems like a movie plot.

I read about this yesterday - it's really horrible. Her dog walker refused to give them her dogs, so they shot him. She's offering a $500k reward for the safe return of her dogs.
It is so terrible. Do we know if they were specifically going after the dogs because they are Gaga's or just in general because they wanted to steal frenchies. I know some breeds are at higher risk of dog napping and frenchies fall into that group.
Frenchie owner here- people have been targeting Frenchies the past few years, but it has gotten much worse during the pandemic. Across the country, there has been a big uptick in the dognapping of French Bulldogs since the pandemic started- in Atlanta, we have had several Frenchies stolen at gunpoint and even people breaking into houses to steal them. I feel so bad for Gaga’s dogwalker- I did not see the video, but it sounds like they fought for the dogs. I hope that they make a full recovery.
snorky that is just nuts to me. Frenchies are adorable but the health expenses that rack up over the years are $$$.
Yes, and it just breaks my heart with some of these dognappings. A lot of the dogs are on medications (due to irresponsible breeding) that they obviously cannot get once they’ve been stolen. It sounds a little ridiculous, but the frenchie community is on edge these days.

I guess it doesn’t matter to the thieves as they just sell them?
Reading this story made me cry last night thinking about my dogs being stolen and how scared they would be. Between this and the dog euthanasia thread I’m just having all sorts of outsized feelings about my dogs apparently

Holy shit, how upsetting. That poor dog walked! I hope he makes a full recovery. And I hope the dogs are recovered and are okay! WTF is wrong with people?
I thought maybe she’d have them chipped and they’d be easier to find, but I don’t know how it works? Can you track them that way or is it if they are found, they can be scanned?

I have no idea if they are chipped.
only for the finder, not the one that lost them
Gotcha. I was hoping there was a tracking device 🤣

Microchips are only for identification if the dog is found. They're little chips that are injected into the fatty tissue between the shoulder blades. You have to have a reader or take them to a vet or rescue/shelter to have them read the chip. George is chipped through a registry called AKC Reunite; his chip has our names and contact information. (I like AKC Reunite because they have a one-time fee rather than an annual one, and we paid a bit extra so that if he's ever lost they send a BOLO with his picture to anyone on their registry who is in our area.) The shelter/vet will not give the information out but will contact us if George is located and brought to a place where the chip can be read. (I did that when a friend's neighbor's dog escaped and we caught him. I took him to the local shelter where they contacted the owner. I waited there with the dog until he could come get him.)
My friend's cat likes to roam. She has a GPS tracking device on his collar and can tell where he is if he isn't home "on time" she can track and retrieve him. She tells of a story where she had to knock on a neighbor's door and go "Hi, um, this might sound stupid but based on his GPS tracker, I think my cat's stuck in your garage." It's a rather clunky device that hangs from his collar.
They have smart collars for dogs that has a tracking device embedded in the collar. I've thought about getting one for George but he has his microchip ID tag (with his microchip number and a phone number to call and give the info so they can contact us), his rabies tag, his county license all on his collar and all with our ID, as well as his microchip embedded that can be read and we can be contacted. But the GPS is another layer of protection, where we can be proactive rather than reactive. So we can find him if he ever slips his collar or disappears (which I find highly unlikely given his reactivity and separation anxiety due to all this quarantining.) I wouldn't be surprised to see Gaga and other owners of highly desirable dogs do something along these lines. A lot of them aren't obvious tracking devices.
Well, yes, that was poorly worded. Obviously I feel awful for that guy. I'm really glad he didn't die as a result of walking a few dogs.
Not just you This whole post and story with more care about the dogs :/ Although not surprising. Is the 500k just a reward for the dogs or if someone gives a tip to find who did this? If I were the dog walker I’d feel some kind of way! Also, now the reports about the dogs being found, but again no mention of the victim or if they found who did it.
I’m glad the dogs have been found, but I really hope they find the people who did this and charge them with attempted murder. I hope the man doesn’t have lifelong challenges due to the shooting, I can’t even imagine what his recovery will look like.
I wonder if some of the reason the articles have focused moreon the dogs is that very little is known about the man due to the active crime investigation so there isn’t much to say aside from he is stable and the investigation is ongoing.

That's exactly what I was thinking, because I too was scratching my head at the bigger public concern for the dogs (whom I'm glad have been recovered safely, truly). I'm betting the police don't want Lady Gaga sharing reward info regarding who shot her dog walker for fear of compromising any investigation. I'd like to believe everyone is concerned about him too and that's why they're keeping hush hush and Gaga is working quietly with police. Which means they may be close to having or already have a suspect. It's also possible she posted the reward for getting the dogs back with the police's blessing so that should help them figure out who was involved without outright saying LET'S CATCH THESE ATTEMPTED MURDERERS.
