The Senate on Friday voted to reject a proposal sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to raise the federal minimum wage to $15.
Seven Democrats and one Independent who caucuses with Democrats voted against it. The vote has yet to be gaveled closed, though it appeared every senator had cast their vote by 12:15 p.m.
Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Angus King (I-Maine.) voted to sustain a procedural objection — a budget point of order — against the wage increase.
.....
The overwhelming vote raises doubts whether Biden will be able to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 at any point in his first term.
I hate this, but they probably have CBO analysis of how many jobs this would cost and just will not go with it no matter what. Realistically then they should go to these 7 senators and say what would be the highest # you would agree to, and then go with that as a consensus to pass something! I would rather see $12.50 than have no improvement. If we don’t pass the increase before the next election it will never happen.

I think it was something like 1.4 million jobs lost but it would raise 900,000 people out of poverty.
I agree with trying to negotiate and at least get it raised some at this point before we lose the opportunity. There are still a lot of states below $12. It’s frustrating that it hasn’t budged above 7.25 in over a decade.

If I'm following, this was just a procedural vote on whether or not to include the amendment as part of the final bill. I have no doubt that some on that list would be against it in a clean vote, but for some of them, it's possible this was just calculus on whether or not the stimulus bill could pass with it included and an attempt to avoid restarting the clock while people are in need.
Or I'm reading it wrong and they're all shitheads. Equally plausible!

Thank you. GUYS. This is a procedural vote about amendments to the reconciliation/stimulus bill. It’s called vote-a-rama and it’s specifically intended to force Senators onto the record in this way so their votes can be used against them (for better or for worse.)
The minimum wage increase was never going to be in the stimulus bill because IT IS NOT RECONCILIATION ELIGIBLE per the parliamentarian. Her ruling is fine. If we want a min wage increase we need to get a better Senate majority or eliminate the filibuster.
For fuck’s sake. Bernard knows this. You know what else he knows? That “we” would fall for this clickbait headline bullshit. So good going, I guess.

Also voting to sustain a procedural objection based on long-standing Senate rules and deference to the parliamentarian =/= voting against whatever the content of the amendment is.
All this tells me is that these people agree (rightly IMO) that the parliamentarian’s ruling should stand, which I have no problem with.

Here in Seattle we raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Guess what? It did cost people jobs––because people working 2-3 jobs to make enough money cut their hours down to 1 job. The average hours for low-income workers went down, while their average wages went UP, even though the number of jobs went down. I really wish there was room for nuance in these conversations.
(and all this is aside from the procedural vote, which does not mean those Dems don't support an increase to the minimum wage.)

Agreed. Also for the record re: the posts you were responding to, it isn’t possible to negotiate on the dollar amount in this particular context. A minimum wage increase cannot be included in the stimulus bill whether it’s $30, $15 or $9/hour. It’s not the amount that is the issue, it’s that it is a spending bill and that isn’t eligible.
Here's an idea! Let's lock all the senators in a room. They can each write a number on a slip of paper and put it in a hat. Then we take out all the slips that say zero (You know Rand Paul and Ted Cruz want to get rid of the minimum wage). Then we pass a standalone bill raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. We don't let Ted Cruz out of the room, so he can't vote.

yeah. Twitter is going insane at this vote. I was hoping for some common sense, but everyone is acting like it's the end of the Dem party this will cause us to lose BIG in 2020. I just want it all to stop.

RIGHT? Like the solution to get $15/hr is to just let Republicans take over, rather than working harder on getting more and better dems in office. I’m sure that will work out well.
Also, be reasonable people... we need more progressive dems from other states, not a dreamworld where we can primary out Manchin from the left in West Virginia. Eye roll here.
Someone needs to introduce a bill where Congress makes minimum wage.
I just wish they had sone of the same job requirements as I do: minimum education level, respect in the workplace training/ policies, appropriate social media policies etc.

This is how I feel about medical posts sometimes lol.
I haven't been following this particular vote, but thank you for this explanation!!

I would like this opportunity to reiterate that Bernard can shut up FOREVER and ever and I will never like him ever.
Also, HE'S NOT A DEMOCRAT. And I haven't forgotten that he tried to hijack the party to become president because he's an opportunist who cares more about scoring attaboys than he does ACTUALLY AFFECTING REAL AND MEASURABLY POSITIVE CHANGE. Jackass.

I wish I could like this twice! Every now and then a coworker will say something about st. Bernard and how he's got good ideas and blah, blah, blah... I tune it out. I don't have the mental capacity to funnel my rage into coherent arguments. So I don't even play. Especially at work.
