Ok I love my mom but I also know she's crazy.
My divorce was final almost three years ago. Today she decides we have to go shopping. Ok cool, it's her birthday weekend and we were supposed to do something more to celebrate.
Then she starts talking about how my china must remind me of the divorce and how I should really purge everything from my house than has any connection to it. I gave her a bit of a side eye and said that I already purged the emotionally charged stuff and the stuff I kept (like my stand mixer) doesn't have an emotional connection. I didn't feel like spending unnecessary money just to turn it over and replace it with basically the same thing. Especially when I have other financial goals (debt pay off, retirement, etc.)
Well she keeps talking about it. Turns out Macy's was having some crazy sale on china. She had coupons and wanted to get started on her Christmas shopping early. So she had me pick out a new set (8 5-piece place settings, a platter, a serving bowl, cream, sugar, and a tea pot). Then because of the sale we got 6 bowls as a free bonus.
It's sweet but also super weird. Oh and I'm supposed to forget about it now so I can be surprised at Christmas and then sell the other stuff on E-bay and keep the money for those other financial goals.
Mom's weird but it's kind of nice after everything for her to finally admit that therapy (all be it retail therapy 3 years later) might not be such a bad idea after all.
I don't know your mom, but was she just trying to get you to agree to china for your Christmas present.....kinda planting the seed that you should get new stuff because of the divorce and then "well wouldn't you know it, I just happen to have these coupons".

Nah, she's not that sutle. She'd have done it anyway if that's what she wanted without my agreement. I long ago learned not to fight it. She's the same woman who started buying my silverware at 6 and everyday dishes at 13 so I'd be prepared to be a good wife when I was older. She had mentioned the Macy's sale several times. It's like she got stuck in the 1950's and china is critical to running a household. I can't quite get her into the modern world so I stopped trying.

LOL! Oh trust me, I wouldn't. Like I said I have given up trying to get her into the modern world, so I'm fairly sure she won't find us here on her own.
