I will preface by saying I've never posted a poll before, but I'm sure if I did it wrong y'all will tell me;).
This poll brought to you from the SE where gas is right now what TP was last spring. I originally assumed people were panic buying, but after talking to a number of people it seems like they tend to wait until the gas light comes on so they REALLY do need to get some now. What say you ML message board..how often do you get gas?
When I'm on E/close to E. Between a half and a quarter tank. I fill up once a week regardless. SS
Around a quarter tank. And I've been WFH since last March - all the driving I do is to the grocery store once a week and to the office on Saturdays (when no one is there) to swap files. In the Before Times, I used to fill up about every 10 days. Now, it's like....I don't know, every 5 or 6 weeks?
Seasonal? During winter I don’t go far below half. The rest of the year I pretty much wait til it’s on E for at least a day. BUT I live in BFE and don’t hardly drive (I can go days at a time without, and the furthest I go 95% of the time is 15 min round trip).
In my past life when I lived in a city and drove a lot daily I filled up usually once during the week and topped it off over the weekend.

Grocery rewards gets me up to $1 off a gallon for 25 gallons. My tank is like 26? Maybe 27 gallons so I wait till I’m pretty close to empty so I can get the most from my rewards

My H drives to the neighboring state, where gas is significantly cheaper, on Fridays and Sundays. He takes each car and fills up, usually we’re at around a half a tank at that point.
I went this morning to fill up because we didn’t do the second car this weekend because it was Mother’s Day and H didn’t do his regular trip. Yeah, I was not successful. But we have enough gas between the two cars for at least 10 days, so we’re fine- I think!
When I used to fill my own car, I’d wait till I was on E. I hate getting gas. I loooooove that my husband does it for me now!
So like between E and 1/4 tank. I don't usually wait for the light to come on (which it does when it estimates 60-70 miles, so like 2.5 gallons left), but I probably do about 1/4 - 1/3 of the time.
We have a lot of severe weather, even outside of hurricane season, and really hate to go below 1/4 tank. We are also in an area affected by the pipeline hacks, and gas has become both scarce and very expensive in the last few days. Fortunately we filled up over the weekend, but for people who need gas now, it feels like post-hurricane levels of gas supply right now (without the price-gouging protection that comes with a declared state of emergency).
I got into the habit of getting gas at half a tank when I lived in Anchorage. I knew folks who went through the great EQ of 1964 when there was a gas shortage due to broken gas lines and they encouraged me to be prepared in case of such an emergency.

I fill up whenever I have 100 miles until it’s empty. After running out of gas once on the expressway, even having only that much (~1/3 of a tank) makes me nervous. When I was working, that meant I had to fill up twice a week. In pandemic times, when I basically go nowhere, I’ve been going a couple months between filling up.
I usually fill up around 1/4 of a tank. I've been too close to not making it to the gas station I can't handle going lower than that. During the winter I will fill up at about a 1/2 a tank.

Usually when my light comes on, which I think is 35 miles until empty. I also used to keep a 5 gallon can of gas in the garage for my snowblower and lawn mower, so there was some extra gas in the event of an emergency, I usually filled that up when it dropped below half. Most of my daily driving is within a 5 mile radius of my house, so I can go pretty long on a tank. For a few years I always kept my tank around half after getting caught near E during a big shortage in 2008. That was back when I used to commute 50 miles a day.
Below 1/4 of a tank, but before E, because it startles the shit out of me when the gas light and chime happens. I usually watch my estimated miles left and fill up when it's around 60 miles left on the tank, with it being a little more or less depending on the timing of a trip to Costco.
Usually around a quarter tank, sometimes less. I try to only fill up when I go to Costco which is every other week. Costco is the opposite direction of nearly everything so it isn’t really convenient to just pop in for gas.
I play chicken with the gas light. How looooow can you go?
Seriously though since the kids school, my work and pretty much any possible shopping you need is within 2 miles, I am never further than walking distance to a gas station, should that situation arise.
In the summer? My record is 6 miles to go. Oops. I try not to make a habit of that, though.
Last year, when a regular summer thunderstorm turned into a Derecho that wiped out power to our entire city/area for days, I had less than 1/4 tank of gas. I didn't have enough gas to confidently get to where I thought there might be power/gas. (Because the power was out and all cell service was down, we didn't have a great idea of just how far the outages went...or how far we'd have to go until our cell phones could work.) I swore then that I'd never get below 1/4 tank again. That didn't last long, but I appreciate this thread that reminds me just how awful it felt to not have enough gas in one of our vehicles to get out of town.
