We are going away for a week next week. We have a colleague of mine (23 years old, teacher, lives with her parents) coming to take care of our dog (really easy, goes 10-12 hours without needing to go out). We’re asking her to walk the dog 2-3 times a day and spend the night. It would be 7 days total. What would you offer her?
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I would look at rover and see the going rate in my area to decide. Here it looks like $30-$45 to send your dog to someone’s house, not sure if they come to your house.

Does “watch the dog 2-3-/ day” mean walk the dog? I would say $50 / night min, but $60-75 would be better. I would probably pay $500 for the stint.
The thing about “easy” jobs like these is that they are easy to you when you are just living your live. It’s very restrictive to need to be at someone else’s house 3x / day. And sleep there. I know it sounds dumb but whenever I took these jobs at her age it was always way more work/hassle than it seemed it would be.

Walk, yes, my phone does weird autocorrecting sometimes. She actually offered to do it for free - she is really wanting some space from her house / family, loves my walkable neighborhood with restaurants and bars (she lives in the burbs) and loves dogs - but that doesn't seem right to me.

In that case, I’d pay her a little less than whatever your alternative arrangements would have cost, whether it was boarding or paying someone else to petsit. That way it’s a win win for both of you.
We pay $30/day for a dog sitter who is single, lives in a city apartment and loves our air conditioning. He invites his girlfriend and enjoys the country living for a week. I have a neighbor who comes at noon on the days he works to let the dog out to pee. It’s an easy gig. It’s weird because I would pay more but he doesn’t need it/ask and he gets the run of the house. I did house sitting as a 20-something and always loved it. I also throw-in some meals and a gas card.

I charge $40 a day for dogs to come to my house and stay the night. Doing it your way, the person coming over 3 times a day and staying over is actually *much* harder. Has she done this before? Bc I was her and at the end of it in super regretted my offer to do it for free. Anyway, I’d pay her at least $40/day.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham

I was wondering if the situation was kind of as described and she was also very happy to get an escape from her living situation. Did you ask her to stay or did she offer? My in laws had a friend like this. He was in a not great roommate/housing situation (as a man in his 60s) and would actually ask to be able to stay there when they left and offer to take care of their dog in exchange. In this case I would give her at least $300ish.
We paid our pet sitter $25/30 minute visit. You want 2-3 x/day plus overnights, so i would say at least $75/day. It really is a big time investment for them since they cant really do much else if they need to be at your house 3x/day plus overnight.
I think including some munchies, drinks, and maybe a Door Dash GC would also be nice.
I think $50 a day is fair. I will say I have a 30+ year old teacher friend who still lives with her parents (in nyc, so expensive for her to live on her own), and she’d probably pay you $50 a night to have an escape from her parents. 😂
I think $30/day min. is fine for that situation although I might round up to the nearest $50 or $100 for the whole time. I would have been ecstatic in her situation and often house sat / pet sat for free in high school and college just to have a place to myself.
I know we're in the same metro area. I have friends who run a petsitting business. They charge $70 for an overnight, which includes 24 hour care (checking in/walking at least every 5 hours during the day and spending the night) for up to 2 pets for $70 per night, $10 each additional pet. So $50 definitely seems fair for non-professional help.
We pay our non-professional/former babysitter-dog sitter $55/night when she watches our dogs for us. They are all young with no health conditions and don't need to be walked as they play in our large yard.

$50 sounds perfect. Don't pay more because it "should" be expensive. LOL
I did a board-and-train with a dog trainer for $1400 for two weeks. Someone coming to my house? I'd probably be comfortable with $400-500 for the week. They're driving to your house, so that's wear-and-tear on their vehicle, taking time out of their day to care for your pet(s) and doing you a huge favor (even if they *are* getting paid for it.) But, they're not trained and the dog is at your house not a facility getting specialized training (and other rationalizations for being reasonable but possibly on the cheap-ish side.)
I'm honestly not sure what a good rate would be...but at that age I did pet sitting for people, I would stay at their house, they would let me have whatever food was there and really that's all I wanted...I just so badly wanted space from my roommate and time with a dog lol if this isn't disturbing her daily schedule too much $40/day would probably be just fine.
My friend left one career to do pet sitting full time. What you are describing would cost $728. $70 for each overnight (8pm-8am) + $17 per 15 minute walk.
