I’m reading House of Hilton, about the Hilton family but so far focusing on Paris and her maternal grandmother (Kim, Kyle, and Kathy Richards mom). It’s kind of interesting but not very well written.
I just finished The Lost Village, One Last Stop, and Practical Magic.
I just started People We Meet on Vacation. I’m also reading Jesus and John Wayne, but needed something lighter to balance it out. So far, it fits the bill.
Just finished the audiobook of Obama’s book A Promised Land. It was nice to hear his calming voice on stressful days.

I like to read all spooky books in October:
Right now I'm reading: Blue Dahlia by Nora Roberts- there's a ghost but not scary A Discovery of Witches
Also read this month: Ghost Story by Peter Straub- the writing reminded me of Stephen King Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Up next for my book club: 56 Days- it's about a couple that meet and immediately move in together since COVID lockdown is starting. There's a murder/death.
On the plane I read The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano about a woman who doesn’t want to have kids and her husband originally agreed, but changes his mind and then it splits into (eventually) 9 different realities based on what she does next. I really liked it, but I’m a sucker for alternate timelines/time travel/parallel universe stories. I love all of them lol.
I’m about to start When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain and I also have Beautiful Country: A Memoir of An Undocumented Childhood by Qian Julie Wang with me on our trip to read.
I read The Only Plane in The Sky: An Oral History of 9/11. I was 18 at the time and there was a lot I didn't realize happened that day. It's not an easy ready, but very well done.
I am re-reading Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis (Oxford time traveler series) which is about historians who travel back in time to WWII era London. I love the shifting perspectives and questions it brings up.
I just finished The Last House on Needless Street. I finished it yesterday, and I still don't have the right words to describe how good it was. Dark subject matter, but very enjoyable read. I want more from this author. No spoilers, but this book might be triggering to some.
Also finished The Actual Star. This one also has a lot of potential triggers, but it is SO beautifully written I had a very hard time putting it down.
Currently reading Under the Whispering Door. Not sure where it's going, but it fits into my supernatural theme for the month and it's certainly not a chore to read 🙂
ETA: Cloud Cuckoo Land is up next, but I'm #28 in line, so I don't know when I'll get it. ...crap... I just realized I'm about to run out of reading material 😳

I am reading the people we keep, and like it a lot so far. I am listening to Layla and it’s really good too. This is after stopping 5 books in a row so I am glad to have found some good ones.

I'm reading Filthy Animals by Brandon Taylor. His writing is beautiful but the stories are depressing as fuck.
Before this, I read The Season which is a history of debutantes. It was interesting but probably could have been a great long-form article instead of a whole book.
The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley (very meh…no likeable characters) Eliza and Her Monsters (this was a YA book but I actually really liked it) Reconstructing Amelia (tough to say that I liked this book, considering the subject matter, but it was very readable) Such a Quiet Place (ehhh, it was ok. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it) False Witness (yikes. Dark, dark, dark. Needs like 5,000 trigger warnings for drug abuse, child abuse, pedophilia, sexual assault…I probably missed some too. This book was a lot.)
I just finished Grown Ups for book club. 3 stars. It was pretty good, but way too long.
I'm currently reading All The Light We Cannot See, which I'm sure I'm way behind on, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The author, Anthony Doerr, has a new book out that I heard about on NPR and it sounds really good, so I put that on my holds list.
Next read is Firekeeper's Daughter, also for book club.
I’m almost done listening to Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr (author of All the Light You Cannot See). It’s freaking amazing. It’s a little weird - has multiple timelines ranging from Ancient Greece to the future but you care so much about all of the characters in each one. It’s about the power of books and stories but not in a cheesy sentimental way. I am loving it and will be sad to finish. Excellent on audio!
I also recently loved Matrix by Lauren Groff. Who knew that a story about a medieval abbey would be so fascinating! Its fiercely feminist - the author wanted to write a book without men and she did! Was also great in audio (and much shorter than Cloud Cuckoo Land)
If you’re looking for more of a thriller, I really enjoyed Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kulian. About psychopaths (the diagnosed kind) who are in a special study on a college campus. And then people start dying. It was very cleverly done and I was impressed it was a debut.

I really liked it, but I’m a sucker for alternate timelines/time travel/parallel universe stories. I love all of them lol.
Me too! Please tell you’ve read Life After Life by Kate Atkinson! One of my all time favorites.

I am so glad to see your review of this. It's what I want to pick for my next pick at book club. And we have a couple of people who strongly prefer audiobooks. Yay!
I'm reading Bewilderment by Richard Powers (who wrote The Overstory). It starts off a little slow, but I really enjoyed the last two thirds. I have about 20 pages to go and am so worried about what's going to happen to the little boy in it!
I also read In the Country of Others by Leila Slimani, which was excellent. It's about a Frenchwoman who moves to Morocco with her Muslim husband after WW2. Such fascinating slice of history, and such real, believable characters. I'd like to read more of Slimani's work.
Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri was a quick read, very different than her other books, more meditative and more dour. I'll still follow Lahiri anywhere she wants to go.
It’s long (600 pages!) - not sure if that’s a dealbreaker for your book club. And a warning that the beginning is a little weird but just go with it.
But so good. And so much to discuss! I’m preemptively depressed about finishing it.
We try not to go over 500 pages, but I might see if they'll push it. This particular one is only four people, so it's a lot more flexible than my other one.
I'm reading Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead. It is good but I am reading it in like 10 minute chunks before bed, so I am probably not as into it as I should be. I need to find more time to actually read because I had the same problem with my last book (Klara and the Sun) and I really didn't enjoy that one at all, probably because it was so broken up.
I'm also listening to Night Music by Jojo Moyes, and it is pretty good too but seems kind of long.
