D&D absolute beginner - starter cards?

DS (11)'s school is starting a D&D club and he is going to try it out. We don't know anything about it but I think maybe it's like pokemon? I know it involves cards. What would be the minimum that would be good for him to have for starting out?

I know basically nothing about D&D but we have a starter set from Target, it came with cards, dice, and maybe a couple other things. The rule book is like 40 pages long 😳 so we haven’t tried to play yet.

D&D didn't involve cards back when I was in college...

And I feel old now. Make sure to find out what edition they are playing.

My almost-11 year old wants to try D&D. Here's exactly what he put on his Christmas list. I think he probably researched this. He's a big reader, so the books may be "extra".

It's not a card game. nicolewi has a good list to get a kid started.

The only thing they MUST have is the dice. The rest can be just their imagination but the books and cards help give some jumping off points and a rules framework.

As sillygoosegirl said, make sure you get the same edition that his club is using. He'll need to set up his character per the rules, if he doesn't have the books there is enough information online but the books are easier to use and reference while playing.

DS used to play and said just a handbook and dice, like nicolewi suggested. Whoever is running the group will likely have a map/board, plus sheets to help them create their character.

Thanks all. I ended up getting the starter set from Target that nicolewi listed and my kid is very excited. He’s not much of a joiner so I hope this ends up being a good fit for him. He is very fascinated by the dice that have so many sides!

If he gets really into it there are a zillion outlets for D&D these days. Hopefully there is a comics & games shop near school or home!
