Yes, it's great. H smokes meat and we cook pizzas on it. We have a not-Green Egg brand and it's fine. I don't know the brand, but it's black. I can look the next time I go outside.
That said, what is the rest of your outdoor/grill setup like? We got a charcoal weber kettle grill (with an attached table, so a slightly fancier version) a few years ago, and it can grill, smoke, etc. We haven't really had a problem doing anything outdoors we'd like to do (with the addition of a few accessories, like grilling baskets and a rotisserie). The size might be an issue on the traditional 22-inch kettle, but there are only 2 people in our household. And it comes in 26 inches too.
BUT if you already have a traditional grill you love, then yes, a kamado seems like a good choice.
H won a Big Green Egg Mini. It's too small for a full brisket, but h still manages to cook a lot on it, and of all our grills it is his favourite. It holds temp really well and is all around great quality. When he's cooking for just our small family it's the only one he uses.
He also has a Kamado Joe Kettle Joe which is a kettle charcoal grill, but it has ceramic plates that sit inside so it holds temp better than a traditional charcoal grill. It's a much better price point than the full ceramic grills (I think $500 USD?). It's big enough for a full brisket, racks of ribs, 2 chickens. He really loves this grill too, he chose it for his birthday and we were among the first in Canada to get it last year. It has some neat features like a slow roller so you can use it to cook hot and fast without the slow roller, or put it on to do a long, low cook.
Both have surpassed his love of his pellet grill. We still have the pellet grill because sometimes he runs more than 1 unit, but if we downsize the collection at all, the kamados will be the ones to stay.
I got my H the Kamado Joe last year for his birthday. He has the classic I. It’s awesome. Atlanta grill co is where I bought his and found the best deal. I am buying him the pizza oven this year. I think it was a little over 900.00 but he loves it, uses it a ton so I think it was worth the money!
