I’m considering taking my family to New York City on Spring Break for a few days the last week of March. Starting to get a little stir crazy and my daughter wants to go see Hadestown and Six.
Does anyone have any good hotel recommendations in the Times Square/Theatre District that you suggest for a family? Just looking for something clean and close to the show theatres and a metro station for getting around.
Thanks for the help!! It’s been years since I’ve been to NYC and I’m a little rusty!
Haven’t been there in years but when I was a kid we would frequently stay at the Marriott marquis. Was such a jaw dropping sight to stand at the floor to ceiling window and look down on all of the lights.
It was a nice place-nothing crazy and not the best place we’ve ever stayed but I would recommend it. It’s also in a good location if you’re looking to do theater and Times Square.

Not exactly right in Times Square but I really like the Bryant Park Hotel (walking distance to Times Square) and the Freehand Hotel (a little more east of Times Square, but close to Union Sq and Grand Central Terminal). Highly recommend both.

I think staying closer to Bryant Park is a great idea. It is close to the theaters, has great transit options, and has a wider range of food choices than Times Square (where the options are super fancy, Irish pub/sports bar, or street cart), there is a Whole Foods right there for hotel snacks, and it is less chaotic. Bryant Park is also very close to other Manhattan landmarks like the New York Public Library (literally next to the park), Grand Central, and St. Patrick's.

I try to avoid staying in Times Square (like most of the NYers here), but if I wanted to wow kids, I’d also stay at the Marriott Marquis. The glass elevators and the revolving restaurant are pretty fun for them.
I actually took DD to the revolving restaurant for dessert when we did a girls trip to NY a few years ago. And when I was a kid, we used to go for Sunday brunch there to celebrate our birthdays.
I'm taking my almost-11 year old to Manhattan for Spring Break too! We are staying at the Marriott Marquis b/c I'll be solo w/ him and it's near the theatres (we have points).
I've also stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on 40th and that's great too.
Another former NYer who would really advise against staying in Times Sq. You will not want to be around the noise, crowds, etc when you’re trying to relax at the end of the day or taking a break from sightseeing.
Check out the hotels on W 44th: the Algonquin and the Iroquois are historic and walkable to the Theatre District but not in it. ETA the Royalton used to be super trendy back in the day. Further East, anything around Grand Central is also walkable (a few crosstown blocks longer) or you can get the S train (essentially a shuttle) from Grand Central to Times Sq.
I was by myself, but my room had two beds. They stored my luggage before check in and after check out so I could still explore and meet up with cousins.
It definitely wasn’t the cheapest hotel, but it was not expensive at the time. (I was definitely worried about it being a shithole given the price when I booked it but it had decent reviews)
Someone else might have higher standards, and say this place sucks, but I honestly thought it was great.
It looks like they changed names since I was there and the pictures look nicer. So hopefully it’s even better than when I stayed. ??
We stayed at a Hyatt a couple of blocks from Times Square and it was perfect. We were able to walk to Broadway, Times Square, and transit. We used some app that told us which station and train to take to get where wanted to go and it was awesome.
We love staying at Radio City Apartments when we take our kids. There are different size units, we usually get a 2 bedroom because no one sleeps well if all 5 of us are in one room. It has a small kitchen and family room as well. It’s an older place, but for the space we get and the location we feel like it’s the best option. It’s also less expensive than many other hotels in that area. When we leave the kids at home we stay at other hotels, last time we stayed at M Social and it was decent. We’ve stayed at a couple others, but I can’t remember what they were right now.
I love the Algonquin. It's historic and away from the madness. I also think prices can be really reasonable. The King suite is great if you have smaller kids. Otherwise, you might need two rooms there.
We bailed on our Christmas trip since our show was canceled, but had a reservation at the Kimpton Muse…anyone stayed? We need to rebook, maybe in March.

I was just coming in to recommend here. We went pre-Covid so it’s been a bit but we liked it.
Normally we wouldn’t stay near Times Square and weren’t even planning to go to NYC but they had some super sale (I swear it was $120 a night) and we went on a impulse. I was worried it would be noisy or weird but it was very quiet and nice. Great staff, loved the room. I don’t think we had much of a view but I know some rooms do.
Hampton Inn Times Square Central (there's like 3 Hampton Inns in TS). It's on 41st street halfway between 7th and 8th avenue - the fact that it's in the MIDDLE between 2 avenues means the street it's on is actually very quiet, I was surprised.
Hampton Inn also has free breakfast....and the location had subway stops for literally every line within 2 blocks. It was crazy how convenient it was, I never want to stay anywhere else again!
We have stayed at both the Intercontinental and the Crowne plaza in times square. Both were convenient locations. I think we preferred the Intercontinental, but both were nice.
In the fall, we stayed at Hotel Edison in one of their family suites. It was super affordable at the time and gave us 2 bathrooms, a king and 2 double beds. Amazing for a family of 5. It was just off Times Square. Our window had a partial view of some of the billboards. The rooms and bathrooms were smaller, but clean and functional. We would stay again.
We just did this, and saw both Six and Hadestown. Surprise 13th bday trip for my daughter. We stayed at the Marquis. It was an awesome NYC experience. I used points and we had access to the m lounge for breakfast so that made the hotel especially attractive. We saw shows every night so that location was ideal. Have the BEST time!
