Thanks! I guess I could have started with googling his name first
I'd forgotten they mentioned the Vanderbilts. Yes, it's very clear the Russells are modeled after them. I'll await their university and mansion in North Carolina (yes, I know, not the same exact Vanderbilt). Heh, now I'm remembering the time I climbed the cornelius statue to put a traffic cone on him. I could only get to his feet, though.
What's the overlap between the social register and the 400 lists? I did try googling that but came up short.

The Russell's architect, Standford White, is also a real person. There's a massive spoiler if you Google him, though it doesn't happen until 1906 so I doubt this show will deal with it.

The Russells are a mishmash of people from the era. George Russell is based primarily on Jay Gould, with a bit of Cornelious Vanderbilt.. both villified during the time for being robber barons. Gould was known to engaged in stock manipulation techniques. Bertha Russell seems to be based more on Alva Vanderbilt, though. I'm curious to see if they do indeed model their daughter after Consuelo Vanderbilt.
I was pleased with where it all netted out but I did want more around Raikes - like that he was more than just a social climber. I kept thinking he'd taken money she actually had been left by her father. They're clearly setting up a romance with Larry now, which I wonder if her sharing what happened with him will come back to bite her at all.
Overall I think it got stronger but there's still a lot of stilted acting - of course except for the fabulous Christine Baranski who clearly is taking on the same type role as the Dowager Countess.

was the last episode the one where she attends the dinner in Newport? OR was the one more?

I just realized that the avclub did episode recaps. The best part of it is the end of bullet points expanding on facts and drawing connections on what's somewhat reality based.
