Im in NY. Its uncontested, so we signed, notarized and handed to my lawyer( no need to appear in court) My lawyer submitted paperwork at the end of May. It went before the judge August 29th...still waiting....my lawyer said they will notify her when its final and she will pick up the papers... Anyone have similar experience? Is my paperwork sitting on a desk somewhere collecting dust? I just want this shit done..I cringe every time I sign my/HIS last name...ugh.
From the expiration of our waiting period until it was signed off on: 6 day. I got a call from the lawyer four days after the judge had signed it. Just remember, it's just a name. Dont put stock in it.
My passport is the only thing in my maiden name, never got to change it...it's just at work, I sign my name a gazillion times a day...and i'm a PA...everyone ALWAYS calls me by my maiden name though..only had his name for like a year and my coworkers refused to adapt--smart people! Can't wait to change it back on my medical license...I'm never changing it again professionally.

Yeah I won't change mine professionally again. I got sworn in with my married name in two jurisdictions and now I need new certifications
What a pain in the ass! But it'll be worth it to be "officially" ME again!
I am in CA, so it is a 6 months wait for us. However, our case went by so smoothly that the judge went ahead and gave us a signed and stamped decree 1 month early. The form had the 6 months date as the official date but I was legally able to change my name right away instead of having to wait.

In AZ, 77 days from the day I filed to the day it was final. The day it went to the judge I was in court to make sure it got processed right away. You could either have a hearing and get it the day of the hearing (even though I was the only one who had to and did show up) or you could get it when the judge got around to it, usually within 3 weeks after when it would have been done if you had a hearing.
It could have been faster if it hadn't been such a frightful mess getting my ex served.
I happily left the court and drove straight to the social security office because I had to change that before my driver license. I never changed my passport or several financial accounts, which served me well.
If you change your name on your social security card but not on certain things, doesnt that make them invalid? Like I can't believe some people don't change everything. Don't you have to show ID proof and junk? Or especially for credit report isn't hard to not have everything in one name?
I have had to file my state taxes under my maiden name, even though I have changed to my married name. As long as the social security number matches one of the names, most don't care. I still carry around the "wallet marriage certificate" the state gave me as proof of my maiden name and married name. A lot of places do accept it (the title office did!)
