Curly hair people- does anyone go back and forth between leaving it curly and straightening it? I’ve been pretty committed to CGM for about 9 months now, but I straightened it yesterday, and I think I prefer it like that.
There was a post about mulching recently, and it made me wonder- do people re-paper under the mulch every year? Do you get rid of the old mulch first?
I have naturally curly hair. I get dry cuts now, so whenever it is straightened, it doesn't look very good. If I could straighten it myself, i might do it more. But I'm just not good at it and it takes up too much time. So I've just embraced being curly, and gotten myself a good baseball cap for the bad days.
I have wavy hair, so most days I just scrunch in my Ouai foam and its wavy for the day but occasionally I blow dry it straight when the mood strikes me.
I do not put new weed screen under the mulch every year. I think its supposed to last 7 years? I've never lived anywhere that long but I guess I'll have to see about replacing it when we get to that point since I'm not leaving this house ever lol.

I can only straighten my hair when I have a ton of time and there isn't a drop of moisture in the air. So - almost never.
I do not put new paper under the mulch every year. Once you clear out a lot of the weeds, the mulch does a pretty good job at keeping them at bay. We don't get rid of old mulch first either.
Why do my dogs only eat when I feed them? Really, it's two of the three dogs, but sometimes all three won't eat if H feeds them. Like, Monday night I wasn't feeling well so went and laid down for several hours. My dogs wouldn't even go downstairs to eat, even my hefty girl who rarely misses a meal. I'm slightly concerned because I'll be on vacation for 10 days next month and H will be home alone with them.
Bernadine, it really depends on my mood whether I straighten or wear curly-ish. Either way though, I sleep wearing a satin bonnet to get the most days out of whichever style I choose.
I also don't put anything under my mulch, I didn't realize that I was supposed to. Whoops.
I used to straighten my hair when I had it cut in a chin-length bob. I lived in a very dry climate, so curls didn’t work well, but straight worked great. It’s now a few inches below my shoulders and I live in a humid climate, so I haven’t straightened it in years.
I straightened for years and the damage to it was terrible. I wasn't able to wear it curly anymore because it was like I burned all the curl out or something. Then I chopped it all off and grew it out again and didn't touch it. I have healthy curls/waves again and just decided, it's what I've got, it's what I'm going with. It's a huge time saver anyway.

It depends on the climate. For example, when I live in the northwest, my hair feels great and I love straightening it. When I'm in a humid climate, I do the curl method because my hair and scalp needs a lot of moisture (conditioner in shower, leave in conditioner, and argan oil).
1. My hair is only wavy about a 2a. I never straighten it with heat, but sometimes it is just straight because the waves have fallen out or I haven't scrunched it enough. But generally speaking, I like a little waves so I do scrunch after showering.
2. We put mulch on top of our existing mulch which has pretty much disappeared after the winter.
I switch back and forth in summer when the humidity is a factor. It looks much better curly when I let it go natural for longer periods of time. During the dry winter months I mostly let it air dry and then enhance my natural curl with the iron or beach waver. My hair is a train wreck from 235 years of highlights/bleach and I'm in the process of growing out the damage so I try to avoid the flat iron and hair dryer as much as possible.
My questions both have to do with body hair.
I am generally pretty hairless. My body hair has always been light and slow growing. The downside of this (besides having thin baby fine hair on my head) is that I have invisible eyebrows and eyelashes. It's gotten much worse as I age. I've been using a serum for growth and I THINK I see growth, but I guess was expecting darker hair? It's been about 3 weeks. My question is - if you are a light, fine-haired person can you expect thicker fuller brows and lashes, or are you doomed by what you genetically produce?
Life is extremely busy but I noticed last night that I rarely have to shave my legs anymore and I have no arm hair left. Like I mentioned above, it's always been minimal and light, but now...it's just not there. Is this normal for aging? I am seeing a new GYN next month so I'll discuss it. I'm still getting my period like clockwork so I'm not sure it's perimenopause. As a side note my body hair also stopped growing when I was pg. with my girls (but not our son).
I have wavy hair so it really only looks good curly in the summer when it’s humid. Fall/winter I straighten my hair but only wash every 2-3 days or on days I’m in the office/have things going on. Summer I will usually wear it curly but sometimes straighten if it’s not too hot and I have the time. I have a couple creams I use for scrunching it that seem to work pretty well.
DD2 has curly hair (ringlets). I have straight hair and no idea how to do her hair. Can you tell me what to do to care for her curly hair?
- Don’t use a traditional hair brush. Use a wide-toothed comb when hair is wet (after bath/shower or use a spray bottle).
- Use a microfiber towel to catch drips (I like the waffle-knit ones), then run you fingers through with curl cream, and gently scrunch (I do this upside down) while hair is damp. Let it air dry.

I would use curl- specific products. It takes some time to figure out which ones.
Depending on her age, I would start with shampoo, then condition. Use a wide tooth comb while the conditioner is in, then rinse. Before getting out of the shower/tub, get the hair really wet again and add some conditioner, without rinsing. If she’s a little older, you could add a curl product like a gel or cream.
Unfortunately, a lot of figuring it out is trial and error as far as products and methods.
“They” actually don’t recommend the weed barrier under mulch since it’s a naturally decomposing material. I use it under areas with river rock but not mulch so I guess my answer isn’t helpful.
What I do is put a layer of preen down on the existing mulch and then apply the new mulch overtop and it should keep weeds away all season.

We don't put anything under the mulch. We bought a house last year with red landscape stone in all the beds, with landscape fabric under it. It is missssssserable work getting rid of it all, as we make significant changes to the landscaping. I have always found a thick enough layer of mulch does just fine without a barrier below it.
Definitely don't get rid of the old mulch. It's great organic matter as it breaks down.
Why are all jeans cropped now? I suppose this is like when skinny jeans became a thing and I thought they were hideous and not flattering at all and 2 years later I started wearing them. I guess I'll be in cropped jeans in 2024?
nancybotwin, I have a 4 year old with big ringlets and vary fine hair. I use a conditioner and brush her hair out in the bath once a week. I only shampoo once a month at most, unless she's sick and gets snot in her hair or other reasons her hair needs to be shampooed. Every morning I spray her hair with a ton of water and use a wet brush, then scrunch and let it air dry. I don't use gel or anything regularly, but will occasionally if she lets me. I have a detangling spray (look for something with cetrimonium chloride in it) if she gets really big knots in her hair, but it isn't often necessary.

My cleaning person broke their foot. They came to clean our normal 3 hour job. They are at the three hour mark and has not made it upstairs. Am I wrong to only pay for three hours? I only budgeted for our normal cleaning. Should I just ask them to stop and do the rest myself?
H has been urging me to find someone else for other reasons. Timing is not great for either of them. He isn’t impressed and they are going to feel it’s due to injury. 🥴

Don't brush dry hair if you can help it, and not with a regular brush. When I had long hair I used a detangling comb or a wide toothed comb only, but I would have used a Wet brush if they had been around then. My hair is too short to need a comb or brush now, (faux-hawk adjacent meets poodle-lol) but the top is still long enough to be dealing with curls.
I prefer a combination shampoo/conditioner, then a leave-in conditioner and other product, but that's just what works for me.. everyone is different. What works on my hair (Carol's Daughter Hair Milk products) may not work for another curly haired person.
I don't wash my hair every day, and find that I can refresh it by spritzing it with a mixture of leave on conditioner and water... plain water refreshes the curl but can make it frizzy or dry looking. Sometimes I add another product to the mix if my hair is too dry.

I don't know, but as a tall person I hate it.
Also, it snows 6 months out of the year here; I don't want exposed ankles when it's freezing out.
On the topic of hair... My daughter has super fine very blonde hair. After the pool her hair feels slimy, like when you have conditioner in and then dries really crunchy. I assume it's the chlorine? I soak her hair before she gets in, but what else should I do or use? It's starting to look really fried. When we weren't swimming a lot I washed her hair once or twice a week, but now I'm washing it after every swim time with my shampoo and conditioner.
