We bought a house (YAY!). DS (10 years old) no longer likes his loft bed (he's been sleeping on his bean bag for about two months now), and we honestly weren't sure we'd be able to get it into the house anyway. We're going to sell his loft bed and get something else.
1. He wants a Star Wars themed room, so I'd like the furniture to be black or gray.
2. His room in the house will actually be slightly smaller than the room he has in our apartment. Are beds with built-in storage (like a headboard with shelving or drawers under the mattress) worth it?
3. I'd like him to have matching furniture for the first time in his life.
I like the Ikea Hemnes with two storage boxes, but it's out of stock near me and not available for shipping. Is there furniture at a price point between Ikea and Pottery Barn/Crate and Barrel?
We got DS the IKEA Malm bed (and matching dresser and night table) in black and we’re very happy with it. I know Ikea is having supply chain issues, not sure if it’s just the Hemnes that’s showing out of stock for you…
ETA: it has rollout drawers on both sides, and it’s great for storage. We put everyday stuff in his dresser but the bed storage is great for lesser used things like extra blankets, etc.
We also like IKEA for kids rooms. DS has a Hemnes dresser and malm bed. I like that it’s adult furniture and I just make the room a kids room with the rest of the decor. I know what you mean about the supply issues though. I got IKEA furniture for the baby’s room recently and had to stalk the website for it. The Hemnes dresser I wanted did come I stock eventually.
We got C a bedroom set from Rooms To Go about two years ago. Full size bed, dresser, and night stand. It’s wood with a grey stain to it. The bed has a trundle underneath it that can be used for storage (we currently use it for out-of-season clothes and extra linens) or can be used as a twin-sized trundle bed if you buy an extra mattress.
I kind of wish we’d bough him a bigger bed, because he’s going to be a TALL kid. But he’s unlikely to have a room big enough for a queen bed anytime soon, so he’s just going to have to deal.
We upgraded C to a big kid room for her 9th birthday this spring. We got this bed (which is white and I realize not what you’re looking for) and the headboard and drawers underneath are awesome. Those features are game changers for us in terms of storage/less overall clutter.

I am a huge proponent of bookshelf headboards and drawers under the bed. Both kids have drawers, and all of us have shelves built into the headboards. There is Always a need for keeping stuff on the headboards. And my 8-year-old has recently turned his into more of a display than just piling random stuff into the shelves, which is neat.
IDK about sourcing, but as far as storage: we have an Ikea Brimnes bed at my dad's, and I find that style (storage drawers on the sides) annoying. It has 2 storage drawers on each side, but the one near the head end is incompatible with having a nightstand. Either you can open the drawer and don't have a nightstand, or you have a nightstand that blocks the drawer. Useless. We end up only using the foot-end drawers on each side.
We have a storage bed at home with drawers that pull out from the foot end. Not as much total storage, but greater percentage is useful.

100% the bold. We have in-frame (platform) drawers for sheets & blankets and of course, that exact problem. Nightstands block them.
I got DS a nice light gray bedroom set he can grow into at Raymour and Flanigan. I can't find his set online but if you searching something like "grey dresser" you will see lots of choices.
I was very into Ikea for a long time but now in my 40s, I'm over the self-assembly and just need it delivered and set up and done.
DD's furniture set has the drawers built into the side of her bed frame. I'm looking to get her a new set and won't be getting that. They weren't as useful as I thought.
Have you check FB marketplace -I feel like ours always has a lot of Ikea stuff on it. My girls all have Ikea dressers, and they hold up pretty well if you don't move them a lot.
I do really like West Elm and Work Market furniture too. Both seem to hold up well, and you can find some good deals.
