zaneyzoo, me! Well I was on both...I'm off both now. I lost 30 lbs on Mounjaro and had labs done in mid Dec and my Dr took me off my Levothyroxine. I've been on it since I was probably 16 or 17. My Dr has adjusted my dosage a few times the last couple of years but never taken me off of it. I'm going to an endo next week to see what they want me to do. I had no weird side effects though while on both. I will just say you probably need to have your labs done at ;least every three months while losing weight to adjust your dosage.
I like my PCP but I need another opinion on all of this and I want them to help me with a prior auth for Mounjaro or Ozempic which my PCP will not even prescribe (I was getting it through Telehealth).
So I've been chatting with my doctor about the possibility of this medication. Does anyone who takes it, also take synthroid/levothyroxine? If so, any side effects?
I do. No apparent thyroid-related side effects for me - just a few bouts of the commonly known GI side effects. I'll have my endo run my normal labs when due, but I've been at the same dosage of Synthroid for 20 years and across a span of close to 100 lbs and multiple pregnancies, so I'm not expecting a major dosage adjustment.
egishere, janegold, Thank you so much! I put on 40 pounds 20 years ago and I cannot lose it. I do all the "right" things too, so I am very interested to see if this will help.
Also not sure if any of you saw this on 60 min but it was a great piece!
I saw one of the physicians featured in this piece for years and I'm so grateful for her and her perspective. I'm really glad this is getting more attention and I am hopeful that this may lead to meaningful changes. Love that it ended on a positive note regarding coverage.

I am on Wegovy, not Mounjaro (similar) and also on levothyroxine (my thyroid was removed so I always will be). I haven't had any thyroid related side effects nor needed to adjust my levothyroxine dosage since being on it (though my dr. is monitoring my levels more often while on it).

Thank you for sharing this. I was in tears watching the discussion about the bias patients face. When I herniated a disc years ago, I could barely walk. The first doctor I saw lectured me about my weight to the point I was crying in the treatment room. I tried explaining that for the months it took to wait for that appointment, I had been unable to do basically anything. She pressed on about how if I wasn't obese, I wouldn't be in that situation. It was utterly humiliating.
"Novo Nordisk is pleased to report that all dose strengths of Wegovy are now available to retail pharmacies nationwide. However, pharmacies may experience normal delays given the time required to order the product from their local distribution center, and geographical variabilities."
I am trying to figure out what doctor to make an appointment with to discuss. My PCP left recently so I am in search of a new doctor but could find an endo or something instead if that's better. I have PCOS but my hormone levels are always normal when tested.
pugz, I’m also contemplating an appointment to discuss. My PCP and I did discuss a few months ago, and I looked into insurance coverage and found it started Jan 1. So we talked about doing it in January. Which is now, but I’m on the fence.
I’m also losing weight a bit on my own. Which could mean maybe we finally got the thyroid meds right (adding the T3). Or is it could mean finally I figured out how to lose weight (but, I don’t feel like I’m doing anything different). Or it could me my cancer is back (my only real weight loss periods have been cancer related). Ain’t that a mind fuck. I think I’ll discuss the meds with oncology at my next checkup, which is next month.
Resurrecting this thread again. I found a new doctor and had a great conversation with her about it. My insurance pre-authorized Wegovy for me and I'm at the point I'm thinking more seriously about trying it. My cost would only be like $25 a month. My doctor is of the mindset that research indicates it is a lifetime drug like what many folks take for other chronic medical conditions. The lifetime aspect of it does overwhelm me a bit, although I don't give my meds for my anxiety/depression a second thought, I plan to take those forever so long as they are working.
I'd love to chat privately with anyone that has taken Wegovy as I have some questions.
I’m about to go back on one of these meds. I gained everything I lost when I stopped them, so for me it will be lifelong if I start again. That is my only hesitation, but my BP meds are lifelong, so I don’t know why I struggle with one but not the other. I was on Saxenda, but I hated doing daily shots. Hoping to switch to one of the weeklies.
I'm on the lower dose ozempic, but I'm happy to answer questions. There are also tons of practical tips for reducing any initial side effects on reddit (like apparently injecting on your thigh instead of your stomach can be better for preventing nausea, and starting stool softeners at the same time helps you get ahead of other unpleasant side effects). I read through a lot of those when I started.
The bump on this was well timed. I have an appointment with my PCP next week. It’s not for this, but it may come up because she will tend to do some of the annual stuff at other appointments (so, I’ll probably get my annual bloodwork orders even though I’m there for my hip). My insurance will cover it now. But I’m not sure I’m past the long-term commitment of a newish medication, and potential rare unknown long term side effects.
pugz, you should give a try! You can always quit if you hate it. As long as your side effects aren't terrible i think you will be pleasantly surprised!
I have no new updates really. I lost 30lbs on the Mounjaro and have been off since Dec. I have gained 5 lbs back pretty quickly but have managed to hold it at there which I'm good with just not losing anymore unfortunately on my own. I'm definitely hungry a lot though and have cravings for sugar etc.
I did go see a new endo in Jan and she agreed with what my PCP said and is keeping me off my Synthroid for now. I'm getting labs done and seeing her again in April. She was all for prescribing me Ozempic or Wegovy. They tried a PA for the Ozempic but my insurance denied- wasn't surprised. The Wegovy I could get under my insurance get but the cost was going to be over 1k even with using their coupon...I think the coupon took off $250 or something like that. Our insurance totally sucks..we have a 5k deductible including RX. DH changed jobs so we are going on new insurance April 1st which I think is BCBS so I'm going to try again to get either Ozempic or wegovy...or maybe Mounjaro again. The endo was reluctant to write Mounjaro because of the shortages but I think those may be getting better? Her medical assistant was really helpful with trying to get the PAs done for me so hopefully it wont be an issue.

The mounjaro rep was just in my office this week and I asked them about the shortages. They said there are currently no shortages for the med however it doesn't guarantee that your specific pharmacy will have it in stock.
They also mentioned the removal of the use for anything other than T2D, so unless you have that diagnosis you likely won't be able to get it however since Lilly has submitted a fast track application to have it approved for weight loss it should hopefully be available for that diagnosis soon.

I feel like if it was a pill it would be less overwhelming to think of taking forever, you know?

Personally I find the once weekly shot less overwhelming! I often forget to take pills. Once a week is easier for me to remember.
After 10 months of taking Wegovy and losing 60lbs, my insurance denied both my prior authorization and appeal. I've had great results with this med. My dr thinks it's because I lost too much weight. I'm still overweight. This system of insurance dictating my healthcare treatment is so broken.

I do have some questions. I’ve lost 58 pounds now, and my doc is starting to lower my dose (likely over several months, similar to my increases) to get me to my maintenance dosing. I still want to lose 60+ pounds.
Does anyone have experience with this part? Should I push to stay at a higher dose, or ask for a slower decrease timeline? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have lost this much, but with so far to go to be considered in a “healthy weight range” I have some concerns.
FWIW, my goal weight is still higher than what most of you would choose. Lol. I’m 5ft 6in, and am shooting for 165-170 range, so not unreasonable or unrealistic at all, I don’t think.

Why would you say that? Many people are that weight and it’s totally fine and people are ok with that. I haven’t weighed myself in awhile but I’m 5’3” and think I’m around that weight and "choose" it and am very happy with my strong body. People should not be so hard on themselves!
