I'm a long time removed from this as my youngest is 14. But my sister is having a baby and I wanted to do a big basket for her with all of the things that you need but don't really necessarily think to get. Plus, some other fun stuff too. So far I have a bunch of different Little Remedies, Butt Paste, brush/comb set, heat sensitive rubber duckie, nose sucker thing, thermometer, muslin baby blankets and a couple of cute outfits I found. I'm also going to put some diapers in there, but I'm looking for some other 'must-have' items. We are planning her shower for early November, so I have plenty of time, I just want to be able to pick up things here and there to help spread out the cost.
Lingerie bags for all the little items like socks and mitts! We hung it on the changing table and when it was time to do laundry just zip up and toss in washer and dryer. It's always my #1 suggestion to this question!
Zutano or Burt's bees booties that snap so they stay on. Teething banana. Feeding stuff like baby spoons, suction plates/bowl, cups. Munchkin weighted straw cups or 360 cups are popular.
All my other "go-to" stuff that my first loved my second hated so now I feel like there's no universal gift lol.
I have a bunch of stuff related to pumping too but that may not be necessary for her. My son was 5 weeks early so I’m still doing a lot of pumping as opposed to just breastfeeding

I don't know what Little Remedies would be, so sorry if these fall under that, but I'd do some baby Tylenol and all the bath stuff: soap, shampoo, lotion, a cute towel with an animal head.
The electric nail files that spin around are really good too, albeit for when they're a little bigger and don't have the newborn paper thin nails.
For recovering after delivery - Earth Mama Angle Baby perineal spray and herbal sitz bath. I loved both of these. Delivery did a number on my body and I used these for weeks to ease the pain.

There was no limit to the number of spit up rags (cloth diaper kind, although even then there were some better that others) we needed.
We also had plain onesies in every style and size, tank top, short sleeve, long sleeve, long sleeve mitten cuff…
I didn’t think I would use the absorbent liners on the changing pad, but after finishing up my extra supply of the giant hospital pads for that purpose, I found they were useful.

I have no specific answers because I live in a small apartment so most of these things are not must haves for me because I don’t have space lol.
Anyway, I always get stuff for the mom/pregnant person at baby showers as well.I feel like they always get neglected! Sometimes it’s things lie tea, wine, lotion, magazines, gift cards to take out restaurants, stuff for healing, candles, nice bathrobe, etc. Depending on how well I know the person is how personalized I get.
All my other "go-to" stuff that my first loved my second hated so now I feel like there's no universal gift lol.
My only hated nearly everything! When people ask about must haves I just tell them to save their money.
Muslin blankets were good. He loved a tight swaddle and they were the best to use. We also layered them over every surface because he was a spitter.
He loved the ring sling. It had a learning curve for me, but saved my sanity with a kid who needed to be held constantly.
I loved Nooks booties. They are a Canadian company local to me. They made wool booties that fasten above the ankle so they actually stay on. We can’t go with no shoes in the winter so finding something he couldn’t kick off the first winter was crucial.
- Frida baby "Windi the Gaspasser". My baby couldn't pass gas on her own until she was 12 weeks old and this was a lifesaver. Instant relief. The Frida baby starter kit will have it. - if she will be breastfeeding, Huggies Little Swaddlers diapers or Costco Kirkland diapers (same manufacturer). They have a back pocket which prevents liquid poop from going up their back. - Frida Mom postpartum kit - Frida Mom upside down peri bottle. OMG. SO SO MUCH BETTER than the one they gave me at the hospital. The one from the hospital was hard plastic and looked like a generic condiment bottle. When you spray the area, all the water falls back on your hand. With this Mom Frida bottle, there is no mess and it is so soft to squeeze. - Rohm travel sound machine - Skip Hop elbow and knee saver. She will be using this for YEARS until her child can bath on their own. And the Moby bath rinser. I always forget to pack it when we travel and I have to use an ice bucket. - Angel care baby bath support.
All these items I used everyday and still use with my 2-year old. I have another baby coming and I am so glad I have them. If they are not part of your basket, make sure she adds them to her registry.
If she’s planning to breastfeed, this kit. The hot/cold pads were life saving for me, I used them a ton with both my kids (and still use them as ice packs now LOL).
Something else practical, make sure she registers for a wipeable changing pad. We have the Bumbo one and if the baby pees of poops, we just wipe it with disinfecting wipes. I don't understand the ones with a fabric/velvet cover. You don't have time for more laundry.
Not an uncommon suggestion, but a wipe warmer. I've recently been using baby wipes on myself for medical reasons and omg they are so cold. I wish I had a wipe warmer for myself!
I have a bunch of stuff related to pumping too but that may not be necessary for her. My son was 5 weeks early so I’m still doing a lot of pumping as opposed to just breastfeeding
I have an 18 mo old and another on the way so these things are very fresh!
-swaddles and sleep sacks (I like Halo best because their swaddles can be used as swaddles or just sleep sacks/wearable blankets) -noise machine -bottle variety pack from Babylist -wipe holder. Those damn wipes are impossible to pull out one-handed without a little weight of the holder -play mat -endless supply of burb cloths -microwave sterilizing bags -Zapano baby booties. They stay on much better than socks -If in cold weather, a winter car seat cover (JJ Cole, Skip Hop Duo) -If in cold weather, a "warmie" stuffed animal. You heat the stuffed animal for 1 min in the microwave and it helps keep baby warm. I only put on her legs and certainly over other layers -If in cold weather (seeing a theme yet?) stroller muff for mom -If in cold weather, bear suit (v. coat) for baby
