We've had historic heat, drought and now record-breaking rainfall in STL. It has rained TEN INCHES overnight. (For context, the previous record was 6.85 inches.) It is still pouring at our house. The flash flooding is absolutely insane. This is the first time I've ever seen basically a blanket directive saying stay home, it's raining.
There is probably a joke to be made about these rainfall numbers but I'm too tired and scared to go down to my basement to see the water situation to make it.
I’m pissed because we were promised thunderstorms for days to break this heat and NOTHING. It is better today but it’s so dry and gross.
I was at the dentist yesterday (it had been a few months so Dr Heidi and I missed each other! 😂) and there was a new hygienist. I was chatting with her (I’m one of those weirdos who enjoy the dentist) after she finished my scaling and polishing and asked her if hygienists try to scale their own teeth or do they just go to the dentist like normal people? She said she might do a little if she sees something and it’s bothering her but she goes for her regular appointments like anyone else.
I SWEAR I was not high. When I left I realized what a stupid question that was and now I’m a bit embarrassed. Good thing is that my gum health is improving. It better be after all this $$$.
lilafowler - don't feel bad ,last time I was at the dentist I asked him if I could buy one of those metal scraper tools because sometimes I can tell there's something there, but floss isn't strong enough. He was like, "Yeeeeaaaaah, we don't encourage patients to put sharp object in their mouths" LOL
Yikes, stay safe circa1978 and our other STL posters!
It is supposed to rain here today but nothing yet. My plants are thirsty. It was supposed to storm yesterday but we barely got anything, so I didn't water but probably should have. I was happy though, we went to an outdoor concert last night and I thought we were going to get rained out, but didn't. It didn't rain at all!
We saw the Black Keys and they were very good, but I am going to have to be more selective about what shows I buy tickets for next year. I am too old to have bands not even start until after 9pm on a weeknight. They had TWO openers, so by the time they even started I was kind of over it. It was sticky out, the beers were $15 each, and my bedtime is 10:30 so I was definitely yawning. We left before the end of the concert but it was still about 11 by the time we got home (and we live less than 10 minutes away). I am going to have to be a bigger fan of a band to do that again in the future.
I have a very light day today, no meetings and no super pressing tasks - I'll take it! My kid was slow to get it moving this morning and since I didn't have a huge need to be at work on time I just rolled with it and it was so nice to not have to yell and prod and it made for a very nice morning and I was only like 5 minutes late to the office - so still earlier than I am during the school year. I really do try not to yell too much because I'm not a morning person either and I know it doesn't help but sometimes the frustration gets the best of me. ANYWAY it was a nice morning!
I'm so grateful for the break in the heat and we didn't even have it as bad as others did! It was so nice to finally turn off the AC and open the windows for fresh air. We still need more rain but I'll take the break in the heat.

DS1 spent the night at my moms last night with his cousin. He hasn’t spent the night away from us in about a year. She called at 9pm that he’d thrown up. After an hour of back and forth calls and texts it was determined he was anxious. He stayed and did fine. This mom thing is not for the faint of heart.

I specifically remember the concert I was at a few years back where I had that realization. And also that I don't want to stand for five hours. My back hurts.
We're back from visiting friends in FL for the past 4 nights. I am so, so glad to be back in my own home. Their home was lovely and we had our own room/bathroom but I still think I am too introvert-y to stay in someone else's house for much longer than a couple nights. It was also stressful trying to make sure DS (5) wasn't too annoying to their kids who are 12 and 15. They were really good with him but I am sure they are happy he is gone now lol. He's pretty energetic.
I sent DS to daycare and I'm doing the laundry, unpacking, tidying up the house, grocery order, all that fun stuff.
We had such a nice time at my parents yesterday. Y mom seems to have chilled out over the last year, with guilt trips and martyrdoms. We hung out on the boat, the boys slalomed, double skiied, wake surfed and we all took a swim in the middle of the lake. We had a great dinner and then went out for a sunset cruise before I brought the boys home. Today I’m taking DS2 school clothes shopping, taking the dog to the vet and hitting Costco for a new car battery. Exciting life I lead!
lilafowler yes! We were also promised thunderstorms and I was so excited because it’s been 100* with stupid levels of humidity and I can’t remember our last good thunderstorm, and then…. Poof. Nothing. A couple claps of thunder, a few sprinkles, and then the sun was out again and everything was baking.
Kids got their boosters yesterday, and aside from Viv running a fever this morning that Tylenol knocked out, they’re both doing fine. They’re definitely leaning into the whole “we got our booster shots, we need unlimited relaxation and video game time today. Please don’t ask me to move. Feed me all my snacks, thanksssss” Lol
I am in the office today, I always feel so tired when I am here.
I can see on our ring camera that our new neighbor just stopped by with some plants from her yard for me. She is so sweet and I think we could be good friends! I almost talked to her through the camera but I didn't want to scare her LOL
Also we have a Trader Joe's near our new house and they are so nice there too! They gave me a free bouquet of sunflowers as a welcome to the neighborhood.
Moving is a major pain in the ass but I am so happy we did it

I went to a new eye doc yesterday. Both she and her staff were amazing. And my insurance is way better than I thought because I got both glasses and contacts for a super low price. I mean, my eyes are now so terrible that my contacts are "medically necessary" so that helped get me to the low price, but I'll take it. The real test will be if my glasses work on the first try whenever they eventually come in, lol.
Since we just talked about this, I flew yesterday and was asked to move seats so a mother and special needs daughter could sit next to each other. I said that I would happily move but needed an aisle. (I had paid to select seats and upgraded to extra legroom-- I could do without the legroom but get panicky if I'm not on an aisle.)
Apparently they only had middles. Someone else eventually moved. I did feel bad later-- it was only a 2 hour flight and I probably would have been fine. I'm not sure why the family wasn't seated together, and flights have been so messed up that it's likely that they did pay to be together and were moved for some reason.
I was already flustered though bc they made me check my carryon bc they ran out of bin space and I was so worried it wouldn't make my connection.
Anyway. In Washington now for a few days. My cab driver said it is only super hot for a week or so each year. This is the week. LOL.
Today is dd’s first night of cheerleading practice. I’m excited for her, I hope she likes it. I just want her to find her thing that she’s into. We’ve tried dance, horseback riding, and gymnastics. She doesn’t seem to have much interest in sports.
I'm so excited about my new wedding band, but also terrified that I won't like it when it's done lol. Yay anxiety!
My month of re-reads is coming to a close. I tried to balance when to unsuspend my library holds and was a little early so I already have 5 books waiting to be picked up.
I am having my annual Crab Party this coming weekend and decided randomly yesterday that I wanted Cornhole boards, so H and I started making them last night. It was 90 degrees in his workshop, not fun.

My VP just notified our team that she's leaving the company at the end of the year. I'm so sad. She's been a fantastic leader (she is the upline of my upline) and I will miss her very much. She said she's leaving to spend time with her family, which we all understand. She's had a brutal few years, routinely working nights and weekends due to crisis after crisis. I could never work the hours she has been working, so I completely understand why she made the decision she did. I'm certainly happy for her family that they will have the time with her they deserve.
I really need to get my hair cut and highlighted, but I am trying to figure out when I can go that doesn't mean I end up taking off work early and/or when we're in town. I probably should have tried for this weekend, but I'm sure she's booked and we were iffy on staying here or going to the beach.
Other than that, the work network has been a pain this morning and I need to finish up writing up extra awards for some of my team that are doing more than their share.
Followed up about my retina and he says everything looks great and I don’t have to come back unless something changes. Woo!
There was an awful older woman in the waiting room with her very elderly mother who kept going on and on about how her (conservative nut job) views were under represented in government. She was being really rude to her mom too and trying to shut down any discussion. She said that people shouldn’t get raises because it makes them lazy and so they won’t work as hard which also makes them sad?? So we shouldn’t raise anyone ones’ pay once they have been hired. Some other woman caught my eye in the waiting room and rolled her eyes lol I’m glad I don’t know any people like this in real life, even her 90 year old mother looked like she wished she had anyone else to drive her to her appointment.
I’m pissed because we were promised thunderstorms for days to break this heat and NOTHING. It is better today but it’s so dry and gross.

Our hygienist openly told us that she not only scales her own teeth but that of her dog so I vote not a dumb question.
I dropped DS2 off this morning for his very last day of pre-k. I can’t believe it. We’ve been at that center since we first enrolled DS1 a few months before he turned 2.
There is some sort of VPN issue with my computer that is making my internet connection crazy slow. My IT department hasn’t gotten back to me about fixing it. It’s nearly impossible to get any work done. I’m so frustrated.
We go to Indiana to visit family tomorrow. I’m looking forward to the break.
