I'm trying to commit to start reading again. When I was younger I was a voracious reader, but family life and social media have ruined me. I'm a huge Stephen King fan, and while cleaning out my Dad's house I found a copy of Black House, so I'm committing to reading that this month. And then I have 3 other SK books sitting on a side table collecting dust that I'm hoping to get to next.
My husband read a SK book about a serial killer who kills at carnivals. Now I wish I could remember the name. He blew through it.
I just finished Never Never by Colleen Hoover. I enjoyed it but was irritated it was part 1 of 3 and the other two parts were hard to find. Reviews on them weren't great. so I'm giving up. I also finished First Born by Will Dean. Anyone else read it? I had to read the end twice and I'm still not sure of a couple things.
I don't know if I put this in the July thread; I put this book down to read something else. I am reading Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty and it is great. This kid is amazingly talented. It's also fun for me to read, personally, because it's set on the Penobscot reservation, which is right near where I live, and I've been there for hockey games many times.
I'm also trying to get into The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity by David Graeber, but it's super long, and I wouldn't chose to read it during the summer if it hadn't come in my reserves at the library. So I'm probably going to send it back and try again in the fall.

I really liked Marrying the Ketchups (I am from the area and have many fond memories of the Cubs winning the World Series, so it felt very familiar!), and I LOVED Remarkably Bright Creatures. Maybe my favorite book so far this year.
TR, I think In Five Years was on your re-read list. I started it last night while working on a pretty intensive file download for work. I stayed up until 1am reading. Granted, it’s not very long, but I’ll finish it today for sure. I’m really enjoying it.
This Time Tomorrow picked up and finished off ok. It wasn’t a favorite, but decent enough.
The Lost Book of Eleanor Dare. I wanted to like it more but parts of it were too wordy and I didn't feel like I got invested in the characters until almost halfway into the novel
The Displacements. A fast read. About the first ever (fictional) category 6 hurricane and what happens after the storm. Some political leaning because of FEMA shelters etc
The Red Cross Orphans I enjoy WWII fiction and this was about a young woman who goes into the red cross as a nurse and her story. I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely had love story portions but not romance novel vibes

Next up is the It Girl by Ruth Ware.
I just finished this last week. It was a quick read…I enjoyed it!

It was! I will say, knowing the end made it less intense the second time around for sure. But I wish I could read it again without knowing.
My library holds started coming in fast and furious after I suspended them for the month of July lol
So I've started The Measure by Nikki Erlick and I like it so far. It's a bit heavy handed on the discrimination metaphor(that's not the right word, but whatever) but I'm interested to see where it goes.
I also have the following checked out:
Upgrade - Blake Crouch Acts of Violet - Margarita Montimore The New Neighbor - Karen Cleveland The House Across the Lake - Riley Sager Hide - Kiersten White
Ok so I did really enjoy The Measure and then read Upgrade which was also excellent. Acts of Violet was…meh. I don’t even know if the audiobook would’ve saved it. I hated the use of letters for exposition and the whole explanation of everything was kind of out of left field. So that was disappointing.
Then I had picked up more books and skipped past The New Neighbor, Hide, and The House Across the Lake due to lackluster reviews to read When We We’re Bright and Beautiful by Jillian Medoff. Ooof. I might have to revisit how I feel about it after digesting it more, but my first feelings after finishing it were that I really didn’t like it. The characters were all terrible, motivations didn’t make sense and there’s a lot more I could say, but not without spoilers. Triggers galore in that one, though.
I’m not sure what I want to pick up next, everything I have checked out has pretty mixed reviews.
Starting on The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett tonight. I don’t think I’ll make it very far though.
I’m 7 books ahead on my reading goal for the year, so that’s exciting. Hoping I can keep this up and finish out the year strong. I missed my goal last year, so it feels good to be ahead of schedule.
I am currently 80% done with Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabreille Zevin and I think it is fantastic; just beautifully drawn characters and really moving. I was skeptical of it because it's a coming of age novel but the backdrop is video game development and gaming which I am not into. I don't even really notice the gaming part because the relationships between the characters is so real and moving. Highly recommend so far.
I finally finished Book Lovers. I gave it two stars. I really didn't like it and I only finished it because I paid for it, lol. It was soooooo boring, way too much unnecessary details that went on and on and on. I felt the exact same way about The Love Hypothesis. I think I need to face it that this genre just isn't for me. I like to watch Hallmark movies, not read them apparently.
I'm working my way through the recommendations I got for thrillers in the June thread. I'm currently reading The Last Mrs. Parrish and it's good so far. And it was on Kindle Unlimited!!
I just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - Gail Honeyman. I loved it. Eleanor is so accidentally witty in ways that are completely endearing. I also liked that she was somatter-of-fact about how her tragedy was just her story and didn’t make her feel like a victim. She was a survivor without trying to congratulate herself for it.
I’m now reading 1000 White Women - Jim Fergus. I just started so it’s difficult to asses but I will say I enjoy it while I’m reading but don’t rush to get back to it…so we’ll see.

I loved Eleanor Oliphant so, so much. For all your reasons. It was so funny! Because I liked that so much a friend recommended The Maid. I started and so far like the character. I don't know if she will reach Eleanor level though! I also read 1000 White Women and really enjoyed it.

I recently finished the latest Maisie Dobbs book by Jacqueline Winspear. I like the series and this book was likeable in the same way as the others.
I'm currently reading Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li and I really like it. It's about 5 Chinese-American college students who are recruited to steal Chinese art from Western institutions in order to return it to China.
I’m reading There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins, which is YA horror, after rereading her YA trilogy (Anna and the French Kiss, Lola…, Isla…). It’s fun and engrossing in the same way, and I’m glad I tried it despite not generally loving the horror genre.

I'm reading this as well and agree that it is fantastic. I had to force myself to put it down last night to get some sleep and again this morning so I wouldn't be late for work. I will definitely be finishing tonight! Unless something drastically changes this book is likely to be my favorite of the year, if not the past few years.
I finished my book around 12:30am so technically Aug Just finished Our Woman in Moscow by Beatriz Williams. It took me a little while to get into it but once I did I enjoyed it. I did feel there were a lot of little details that were easy to miss if I wasn't paying close attention, so several times I had to go back and re-read a part.
Currently also reading The Captain, David Wright's autobiography (Let's go Mets!) Working my way through it as I read other books. I think up next for me is The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher.
Finished The Wrong Family today...very meh. The whole story seemed kind of....odd? Like the author was trying to put too many twists in, which explains why the ending felt like way too much to me.
I am on a reading roll this month. Just finished Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and really liked that one too! That was a surprise since I have zero interest in video games. If my package comes today, The Measure is next on the list.

My library holds all came in at the same time, too.
Finished in August: Rock, Paper, Scissors (Alice Feeney) and The Paris Apartment (Lucy Foley). I enjoyed Rock, Paper, Scissors as a fast, beach read, but it was pretty ridiculous by the end.
Currently reading Under the Whispering Door (T.J. Klune).
Up next: The Girl with the Louding Voice (Abi Dare) and The Devil and the Dark Water (Stuart Turton).
I finally finished The Poisonwood Bible. I really liked it, parts of it were so beautifully written. I was reading at work though and had to stop at points because I was tearing up ha. It's a book I will be thinking about for awhile.
I have Cloud Cuckoo Land up next. Plus about 5 other books that came in that I got from the favorite books thread. I have a feeling I'll have to send some back and get them later.
I started and finished The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett. Has anyone else read this? I enjoyed it and sped through it, but it felt like a ripoff of A Man Called Ove. The storyline and characters were really similar.

I finished Portrait of a Thief and thought it was really great. Definitely a different spin on a more traditional art heist story.
I loved Remarkably Bright Creatures sooo much. It was so heartwarming, it reminded me a little of A Man Called Ove even though it was totally different in many ways.
Currently reading The Unsinkable Greta James and I’m enjoying it so far despite the far from realistic portrayal of the life of an academic.
