Has anyone watched? We finished the first episode. I was familiar with the story but wow, what a mess. I feel SO BAD for him and his family. They all seem like such nice people. And Niya - I do not know how she can justify anything she did. How is this not punishable by law?
Also, on a superficial level, he has aged like some fine wine. Wowza.
We watched the first episode last night. I knew about it in general but DH is a huge ND fan and knew way more and even he was shocked by how messy it was. I can't wait to watch the second part tonight!

Yes I watched both episodes. I feel so bad for him. "Lanney" (sp?) cost him millions. It's really sad how people treated him and how they thought he was in on it.
I watched it over the weekend. We aren't particularly into football, so I didn't know much about the story before we watched.
He seems like a really genuinely good person with an inspirational story. The fact that the catfishing drama seems to have superseded everything else he's done with his life is so sad to me.
The part where "Lanney" was in disbelief that he would release the voicemails and texts she sent was ridiculous. We were screaming "You are not the victim here!!!" at the tv.

She is just too much. The more I think about it the more sad I get. That poor kid came from Hawaii and was thrust into such a different environment. The people (mostly white and Catholic), the area, the weather, the culture. He prob. felt so alone. It's easy to say, how did he let this happen? But really, her friendship was probably a beacon of comfort and familiarity. She is such a terrible person.

I thought that the show did a good job of setting the scene to help us understand how he was especially vulnerable to falling victim to this. The fact that his cousin was already "friends" with her, that he was so far from home, so different from everyone else both culturally and because of his football status. He was young and alone.
She did say a couple times toward the end that she felt bad, but it seemed like it was just something she knew that she *should* say. She did not actually seem to have much remorse or to fully understand how much she blew up Manti Teo's life for no real reason.

I remember this being huge but wasn’t super familiar with the fallout. She cost him MILLIONS! The saddest part for me is just how good of a person he seems to be.

I felt so sad for him. The financial toll is one thing, but the emotional toll is just devastating. The short term impact was felt when he wasn't drafted in the first round, but his long term career suffered as well due to the mental strain.
I'm a huge ND football fan and his senior season was such a huge deal with being in the National Championship so I remember the game he played after they "both" died. And I remember when all of this came out, being really shocked. I'm still mad that Johnny Manziel, who essentially threw his career away, won the Heisman and Te'o, a good guy and equally good player, lost. I had forgotten that Naya is Marques Tuiasosopo's cousin until this reminded me. I really feel like there needed to be some sort of consequences for her. It damaged his reputation, his value, and above all his mental health. I do see he's married now but especially for any sort of football fan, he'll always be remembered for the catfishing.

Yes! I think he was naive , was not really computer savvy and was just a good guy.
