To actually answer the OP, I'm in the SE in a suburban area and we do have insect noise. But I've been in this environment basically my whole life so if I'm not paying attention my brain just tunes it out. I still notice when they go quiet though.
We have a cricket by our front window. It has not moved and has not stopped singing for more than a week now. I admire its commitment lol
I responded yes, and I do, but I usually have fans going all summer and can't actually hear them.
@sameoldstory , I usually get a brief period when it's still cool enough for open windows but no fans and in that time, the tree frogs chirp it up. But this year, I think we were just dry enough that I never heard them.
So, our tree frogs actually laid their eggs in our pool cover (we didn't have it pulled tight so it accumulated a few inches of water) which meant we actually had to delay opening our pool for like a month until all of the tadpoles turned in to frogs. I think that there were so many that they just never left. We've been in this house for 7 years and have never had tree frogs before this year.
Who else is thinking of “My Cousin, Vinnie” when he could not sleep in the woods because of the sounds of insects and creatures … but slept like a baby when he was held in contempt at the local prison.
We don’t have as much of a apartment building culture here as other cities do so most people have some patch of a lawn behind their rowhouse or live in a detached house. Parks + water too. Lots of bugs, hawks, great blue herons, bats, frogs(!), owls all chirping away.
It seems wrong some places are just quiet? I mean even in NYC I heard them a lot in any green space I walked past.
We also have a lot of train noise. Tracks are about a mile away and they are very busy tracks and we typically only hear them in the summer when the windows are open. I don't mind it because I've grown used to it but the other night at about 3:00 there was one that seriously blew it's whistle about 15 times - even H who sleeps like a rock mentioned it the next morning.

I grew up with a ton of train noise. The public transit trains and CSX trains at night. The horn is a soothing sound for me too. We also lived about 15 minutes from the airport so there was very loud jet noises all day and night. Since we didn’t have AC I heard it all!

Our last house was under a flight path for the nearby airport, after we moved it took me about a month to realize what felt weird at night - no plane noise LOL
No. We are in a desert area, super hot and dry. I rarely here insects here.
I was home in northern PA recently with my son and we had the window open at night because it's so hot and no a/c there. My son was distraught and could not sleep because of all the noisy bugs. I definitely notice them when I'm home, but it's nostalgic. It sounds like summer nights.

We have what we called ghost train for years until we realized that sound just really carried in our neighborhood. It is miles away but it sounds like it is in my window at night. I lived closer to tracks as a kid and didn’t hear it as much.

We used to get tadpoles in our pool cover every year. I made my husband scoop them out and relocate them to a local pond.
Peepers/frogs from spring into summer, then the crickets/other bugs mid summer into fall, then the coyotes really come through in winter because everything else is so quiet. we've been woken up by coyotes SO many times in the winter.
I agree with eddy, that it is so peaceful to listen to. I go on my back porch with a book and glass of wine most summer evenings and just read and listen to the bugs. And when the peepers come out in the spring, it's like a sign that we made it, spring really is close!
DotAndBuzz we just starting getting coyotes in the past couple years. I love my windows cracked in winter. I’ve been woken up several times by them. One time they were so close I literally thought my daughter had snuck out and was in front cackling with her girlfriends. I haven’t seen it heard one since early spring so I don’t know if they’ve moved on.
I love the insect sounds at night. It’s my favorite part of summer.
I *was* on the opposite side of Boston from you (Medford) before I sold last fall and we abutted 2500 acres of woodland and I loved listening to the peepers. I’m not really near water now so I don’t get so much of that noise any more. I think I hear the annual Cicadas at night now but last year the periodic Cicada brood was perfectly silent at night. Those suckers def like their beauty sleep!
And now this post has me remembering that infamous week when the bag o’ crickets we bought for the peepers we caught SPILLED. Holy hell that was. A. Week.

I always pictured some sort of noisy bugs in the desert! Nothing?!
I live in a Canadian desert, so different ecosystem than you'd find in Arizona or New Mexico. I paid close attention to the noises outside yesterday to see if my brain was just blocking them out. There were no insect noises during the day and and a very mild cricket noise at night. At my parents house in PA is is just constant insect noise all summer. And peeper frogs in the spring!

I appreciate this reporting back! My mind is blown.
Canada coastal rainforest checking in with no noisy bugs.
What?! Are bugs just outlawed in Canada in general or??
Haha, actually heygrey and I live in the same province, but very different ecosystems. Alberta isn't all that buggy either, but when I moved to New Brunswick I had to learn about earwigs. Ew.
But Manitoba has the world's meanest mosquitoes. And anyone on this board who grew up in Canada knows the BlackFly Song: m.youtube.com/watch?v=f389hIxZAOc

That song/video is a delight! I’ve learned so much.
On the east coast (PA and upstate NY) yes. Especially at our camp where there was no AC and we could hear the waves at night, along with all the insects. When I lived in Los Angeles, no, for two reasons: 1) there are no bugs in CA, and 2) the city has a lot of other night noises, like traffic and helicopters. I really, really got used to helicopters in LA, lol.
Definitely here in northern Virginia- the cicadas seem especially loud this week, even during the day.
I'm outside Philly and we had a cicada sitting on our screen door the other day. I wasn't surprised, since they've been talking for at least a week or so, also during the day. Must be mating season or something.
