I was reading the Twitters this weekend and some person was moving away from NJ back to where she was was from and said one of the things she'd miss was the "insect symphony" at night. It has never crossed my mind that every place does not have noisy ass bugs filling the summer night sky. I'd like to know where these insects (or lack thereof) don't make noise.
Also if you don't have a bug orchestra is it deafening when you go somewhere that has it? I think it would be unsettling for me not to hear bugs when the air is warm. Sometimes they are quiet and then bad things happen (like storms/tornadoes).
One of my favorite things about sleeping with the windows open in the summer and fall is listening to the night bugs as I'm falling asleep. It's soothing!
There's no crickets in Hawaii. You do sometimes hear geckos chirp, and some areas have coqui frogs that are super loud. But for the most part it's pretty quiet at night. We instead have gigantic flying roaches and centipedes which keep things fun.
Not bugs, but the frogs sing spring-fall. They will go quiet for a few seconds then will all start up again. When they go quiet it is disconcerting. Location is PNW.
Because of all the frogs, we don't really have bugs. I do wish we had fireflies, those were cool when I lived back east.
bee20 we have these squeaky frogs that make a racket in early summer. I never knew what the sound was (it almost sounds man-made) and this year I discovered it was a type of frog.
We have lots of lightning bugs, which is really special. They are kind of dying off even here in the east.

I love listening to the bugs and frogs at night. PEEPERS ARE CRAZY LOUD and super tiny. AND LOUD. Sometimes it’s hot enough at night that I need to keep the AC on but most night a bedroom window is open, which also makes it convenient for the cats to hiss at the neighbors’ dog when she’s out there in the early morning.
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
No, living in concrete jungles I think cuts down on that.
I was wondering this. I lived in the city proper 7 years (4 years in the inner city) and it def wasn't as loud as it is out here in the boonies but I THINK I remember crickets.
We do not. I’m right outside Boston and it’s fairly urban, but I live in an area with a decent amount or parks and yards. Plenty of chipmunks, rabbits, and turkeys but a quiet insect population.

We live in Seattle in a somewhat urban neighborhood (lots of parks, coyotes, occasional bear, and even a mountain lion once) but virtually no bugs. I grew up in Minnesota so I sometimes miss the sounds of the insects at night, but on the upside we can sit outside at night (or keep our screenless doors open) and not get swarmed by mosquitos or other biting insects.

Yes! Very loud bug and frog symphony here in IL. I love it. Summer is my favorite season and I love the fireflies and all the noise the summer insects make.
A lot of times, I don’t really notice specifically because I’m so used to it. It’s just like white noise to me. But last week we had some super loud cicadas that I took note of.
Also LOVE the hooting of the barred owls that frequent my street.

I am also right outside of Boston and tons of crickets and cicadas in Quincy. Along with coyotes and turkeys and rabbits and nips… 🤣
I hear crickets at night and what I think are bats. Its almost like a clicking sound and you can see bats flying around from tree to tree so I assume its the bats yelling at each other from across the yard.
We don't have one really at our house, not regularly. But I'm dog sitting this week and the crickets are glorious. It's cooled down enough to sleep with the windows open and they're right there outside the window. It's a great white noise to fall asleep to.

I responded yes, and I do, but I usually have fans going all summer and can't actually hear them.
@sameoldstory, I usually get a brief period when it's still cool enough for open windows but no fans and in that time, the tree frogs chirp it up. But this year, I think we were just dry enough that I never heard them.
