We have an all female rule in our house because I’ve seen too many male cats and dogs pee on everything. Not sure if it is because they’re female or if we’re just lucky but we have no bathroom issues between any of our 3 dogs and 3 cats.
We also love giving them belly rubs and even kissing them on their belly if they’re stretched out which is a no-go if they were boys.
Just to add info about temperament since that seems to also be coming up- everyone gets along with everyone. One dog is strongly attached to H, one is strongly attached to me, and one is equal between us- she just wants to cuddle anyone who will lay still lol.

We've always had boy dogs and every dog I grew up with was male. They have all been fixed early and were all perfect. No humping, not a one of them. I'm just partial to males.
Totally just my own experience and I think it probably has to do more with the individual pets and not their sex, but most male dogs I've known just don't seem as smart. And most female cats I've known have been total pains in the asses and not as cuddly and friendly as male cats.
Female. But only because our girl now is the literal sweetest. She’s my shadow and so chill and gentle. Obviously male dogs can be exactly the same so my reasoning holds no scientific validity.
The one thing I did wish we had a male dog for was spaying/neutering. Spaying seemed a more intensive surgery
My fav pup was male. I don’t know if it’s because we neutered him as soon as we were able, but he never marked or humped anything. Often times he would squat to pee in the backyard.
Our girl dogs tend to be obsessed with men whereas our boys have mostly been snuggle bugs/mamas boys. It may be a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point, though.
We tend to have both at any given time. Our old shih tzu girl HATED other female dogs but didn’t care a bit about males so we could only add boy dogs to the family for a while.
I've had an even mix of both and love all dogs. Two boy dogs have been my heart dogs but I love my little girl right now too. They are all fixed so it doesn't really matter all that much in terms of temperament. Our most humpy dog was a female. Our most timid has been a boy. Our current girl/boy dog duo reminds me strongly of Ellie and Carl from up, lol.
ETA: My in-laws show dogs/adopt retired show dogs and so I've spent a lot of time around unaltered animals too. I will say that I've never much cared for their unaltered females but these are also show dogs and so they can be a little different than your average pet. The boys over the years have been friendly, their current female is a bitch, literally.
I do not, but my husband strongly prefers males. I never had a dog growing up, and he grew up with both male and female dogs. The female dogs he had were much more aggressive and protective of the kids than the male dogs. One of his female dogs actaully bit his brother's friend in the face after he had been warned to not put his face so close to her because that was likely.

No preference.
I grew up with a female dog, but by chance the 3 dogs I've had as an adult have been male.
Dog penises don't bother me. 🤷♀️ I mean, I do occasionally tell my dog, "put your penis away," lol when the red rocket is showing, but it's not something that I really think much about. One of my male dogs was a little one, and I picked him up all the time. Don't think I ever had an issue with touching his penis. I mean, boy and girl dogs can sometimes still have a little pee on them if you pick them up right after they go out -- but the only difference is where on their body that pee is.
Before I got my first dog as an adult, the breeder told me, "the girl dogs love you, but the boy ones worship you." Don't know if that's true, but in that particular case I got a boy and he did worship me. But a girl might have too?

Why is tummy kissing/rubs a no no for boy dogs?
I mean tummy rubs are fine if you’re careful I guess but I don’t really want to be kissing all over a boy’s belly getting pee on my face.
No preference for one over the other, but we specifically wanted a male after Stellabear died because the two Stellas had some issues and our vet said that female/female pairings are contentious more often than male/female. Donny's never peed on anything inside. I do laugh when his little penis pokes out like when he's pooping, but it doesn't gross me out when I'm rubbing his belly or anything.
The penis comments are so odd to me. I never found my dog’s penis bothersome in any way and I frequently picked him up, rubbed his belly, etc.
My dog didn’t pee excessively on anything outside and never inside after he was house trained as a puppy. For this reason though, I will never, ever have a cat. The stories here have horrified me.
You may feel differently if you had my dog lol. I am so over seeing his giant red rocket all the time! He's getting fixed in a couple of weeks so I hope that tones it down some, but he's always excited over something. Also hoping the constant sniffing and marking tones down. He's overall such an adolescent boy right now! My pillows aren't safe around him.
I seem to gravitate towards male pets in general, especially for cats. We all agreed we wanted a male dog though I'm not really sure why? I would have been just as happy with a female. As far as who his "person" is, it's definitely me. Evidenced in many ways but the other day I got home with DD and H was playing with the dog in the driveway. DD headed toward him ahead of me to greet him, and he ran right past her straight into my arms. HAHA everyone!

We have all male pets and I think they are great. That being said, I would really like to have a female dog next. I guess I can't say exactly why, but I want a specific breed and I'd just really love a girl too 🤷♀️

Whut? I'm full on belly laughing at this.
FWIW, my females have always had the least tidy pee area.
I guess the boy dogs I’ve know always have a little residual pee on their hair? And I don’t like petting or kissing that hair? I guess I’m the weird one. 🤷🏼♀️

When you say not bothersome you mean you never accidentally touched it, or it just didn't bug you? I swear I have a normal level of coordination, but especially on smaller dogs there just isn't that much space, and a belly rub or picking up has resulted in a penis brushing my hand several times. Not the end of the world but definitely a momentary eww.
No preference. Grew up with both - the female was a jerk, the male was the sweetest dog in the world. We now have a female. We actually tried to get a male from the litter, but they were all spoken for. Our dog is a lover and super sweet. She isn't a cuddler - unless it's on HER terms. But she is so sweet and loves all humans and all dogs.

The main reason we got a girl puppy is because we have 3 boy cats and we needed more females in the house 😂 For cats I probably prefer boys, though it's not a strong preference. This is my first dog but as of right now, no preference.
My best dog ever was a girl. My dog now is a male and he is seriously the worst. He pees everywhere, eats anything that is out, chewed up my new couch and barks all the damn time. This is after significant, significant training. He was way worse before. It is a good thing that he is cute.

Our first two dogs were male. Current dog is female. My parents have only ever had female dogs, so that was what I grew up with.
I like both and will have either. The dynamic is different, but it's hard to say whether that's more personality or more male vs. female. Our current dog is definitely not territorial/a guard-dog type, and we had one male dog that was and one that wasn't. One male dog was smart, one was dumb (but sweet and a total people-pleaser), but our current female is probably the smartest dog we've had. One male dog, I was "his person" but he also adored DH, our female dog definitely likes DH best but she has her own (positive) relationship with me, too.
Our female dog marks, including marking with one leg up. Sometimes our male dogs would squat.

We had a female because that’s what was at the shelter and we didn’t have a preference as we were an adult couple at the time without kids or other family members around. We heard females were more protective but I have no idea if it’s true. Our dog was a lab mixed with traveling salesman, a shelter pup, and was super eager to please, energetic, snuggly, easy to train, and super loving.
I currently have 3 dogs, but I've also had male dogs in the past and have no real preference. None of the male dogs that I've had have been humpers or pee'd on things, so maybe that is coloring my opinion.

I find that boys bond better to the whole family, while females have an obvious favorite. We have had females that are mine and females that are dh’s, so it isn’t just who takes the most care of them. I feel like all my males dogs have just been big hunks of love. Females can be spiteful and cognizant of who they share love with.
We have had plenty of males that don’t mark in the house. It is important to train them young and get them fixed early. My female currently “marks.” So you can’t say that is only a male thing.
We have had two female goldens and one male. The females have traditionally been easier to potty train and a little more chill. Our male is a nut case. He’s got SO much energy but he’s so sweet with us. He tends to be more aggressive, which we’re working on. He’s a lover and a kisser and he squats when he pees. I really don’t care, boys vs girls. I just want a good personality.
My childhood dog was female, so I tend that way but it doesn't seem to matter much for this particular breed.
To the humping comments, my current female dog has a sort of "witching hour" after she eats her dinner where she is constantly trying to hump me/DH. She's not fixed (still waiting to hear from the breeder if she wants a litter out of her) so it could be that, or it could be an attention-seeking thing.

When we adopt again, I'll be open to male or female.
That being said, the only female dog I ever owned was a challenge, behavior-wise, and standoff-ish. All the males were relatively well-behaved, and very cuddly.
