I find Charles pretty ew, so it was difficult to watch Dominic West in that role when sometimes I rather fancy him. If not fancy, at least I find him charming and mostly attractive. I find it much easier to separate Dolores Umbridge than McNulty. Maybe that's because the last HP I saw was the 4th in theater, and I've watched and rewatched the Wire many times, especially in the last few years.
I didn't watch The Wire but loved Dominic West in The Affair (the actor, not so much his character Noah). When I saw he was playing Charles I was like oh no no no no no.

Ha agreed, I found Dominic West to be a very....generous choice.
This thread is making me very conscious of the age spread here, because I was already an adult when the events of season 5 happened. Anyone my age would probably vividly remember tampongate because EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
And now that they are King and Queen....we really didn't need to be reminded of this.

There's a good chance, as evidenced by me not even remembering the windsor castle fire, I might not have even been aware of tampax phone sex (hurl) had I been an adult. We weren't exactly a news watching nor discussing family in that era. But, honestly, the way it played out on the episode made me laugh. I could see taking sex talk into utter absurdity for a lark. Still, ewww.
I'm gonna go watch the bunk/mcnulty all the ways one can say fuck to get that out of my head now. Hands down best scene ever on tv.

I must have permanently blocked it out because I was an adult then also and while I recall the tapes I didn't remember the tampon part. Damn them for making me know this.
SNL did a tampongate skit with Dana Carvey as Prince Charles which was horrifying at the time and still haunts my memories. It's on Youtube if anyone else wants to be similarly squicked out.

My life is so much better for having seen that! Mike Myers as QEII LOL. Thank you for that!

I vividly remembered it bc of the Ick factor … I was in my late teens/early 20’s for season 5.
I read about tampongate (and the whole sordid Royal mess of the early to mid 90s) in my aunt’s People magazine as it happened when I was tween. This season is right in my wheelhouse!
As someone else mentioned, it’s crazy to think they are married now! She’s the Queen! I bet they hate this being brought up again now.

I remembered the skit but assumed it was totally invented or exaggerated. Nope, the original transcript was fully gynecological! Ick…

Yes! Thank you!
Charles is such a fucking weirdo. At least the SNL skit got the ears right. Why didn't the crown use prosthetics for dominic west? It would have gone a long way. I know they didn't for diana's nose, and I'm abivalent about that, but those ears!

I couldn’t care less about the tampon stuff. They were joking around. It was a fully private conversation between two people who loved each other and had known each other for years.
I think it’s completely outrageous that some asshole could listen in on a fully private conversation and that the newspapers would print it.
I feel sorry for them that they have to relive this nonsense right after the death of the Queen along with a whole bunch of completely fabricated bs about Charles trying to usurp the Queen. It’s a shame.
